Sir Walter Scott, (1771 - 1832), was a renowned Scottish poet and novelist. Born in Edinburgh on the 15 th of August 1771, he studied for and qualified in the legal profession. He turned to writing for a living after the success of his narrative poem, The Lay of the Last Minstrel (1805). In 1810, A succeeding poem, The Lady of the Lake (1810) set largely in The Trossachs , received great acclaim and was responsible for an upsurge of tourism in the area especially at Loch Katrine, The Trossachs still enjoys unqualified popularity with both the general visitor and those fond of outdoor pursuits such as walking, fishing and cycling. Most of all Scott must be recognised as a Scot who love his country as these verses from

Lady of the Lake
Introduction
Born in 1771, Sir Walter Scott trained as a laywer in Edinburgh, but soon became very well known for his grand poems and later for his historic novels. The Lady of the Lake published in 1810 became exceedingly popular and, set as it was in The Trossachs, put that area on the tourist map for all time. You can learn a little more about Scott.
The Poem
King James V, in the guise of James Fitz-James hunts a stag east of Callander in Glen Artney. The chase passes over the River Teith at Callander, along the shores of Loch Venachar, past Loch Achray and enters The Trossachs Glen. Only James is left, the rest of the hunting party left far behind. His horse dropping with exhaustion, James continues on foot. Back to the top Home Contents Introduction Callander ... Image Gallery

Department: Scottish Literature Course description
Overall, the aim is to enable you to study and enjoy the national traditions and wide varieties of Scottish culture. Strengths of course
  • Glasgow's course is unique. This is the only separate department of Scottish Literature in existence, devoted entirely to the study of Scottish literature and language, giving much fuller coverage of the subject than departments of English elsewhere.
  • We offer programmes of study of the traditions of Scottish culture and literature unavailable elsewhere, in carefully planned, user-friendly courses which do not assume previous study of the subject, but which enable you to place the literature in a social and historical Scottish and British context.
  • The School of English and Scottish Language and Literature, to which we belong, received an 'Excellent' grading in the 1997 Teaching Quality Assessment exercise
