Hot Topics Home Page Marine Invasive Species Changing Fisheries Spotlight Making a Difference Since the mid 1990s, Oregon Sea Grant has supported research and outreach programs directed at meeting the information needs of fishing families, businesses, and communnities. Sea Grant has brought together researchers from many disciplines to examine issues common to people who fish for a living, from regulatory change to the challenges facing families whose breadwinners spend long periods away at sea. These efforts have born fruit in ongoing collaborative relationships with such groups as the Women's Coalition for Pacific Fisheries, and in continued efforts to shine light on the human faces behind America's fisheries.
Heads Up! for fisheries news
A new World Wide Web site aims to give West Coast commercial fishing interests the chance to exchange up-to-date information about everything from critical regulatory changes to educational resources for fishermen and their families. Called Heads Up!, the site is a collaborative effort between Oregon Sea Grant and the Women's Coalition For Pacific Fisheries. It offers a simple, interactive bulletin board format where industry, regulators, and others involved in commercial fishing c an post information about meetings, regulatory decisions, educational resources, and other newsworthy items.

NOAA FISHERIES/SEA GRANT AWARD FELLOWSHIPS TO FOUR Four doctorate-level graduate students have been awarded fellowships to pursue their studies in population dynamics or marine resource economics sponsored by the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service ( NOAA Fisheries ) and Sea Grant. NOAA Fisheries and the National Sea Grant College Program are a part of the Commerce Department's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( NOAA "We have high expectations that the Graduate Fellowship Program will pay dividends in terms of attracting highly qualified students to the important, and currently understaffed, disciplines of population dynamics and marine resources and encouraging them to seek employment with NOAA Fisheries following graduation," said Emory Anderson, program director for NOAA Fisheries in the Sea Grant office. The program, funded equally by NOAA Fisheries and the National Sea Grant College Program, provides support for up to three years for qualified students working towards a doctorate in population dynamics or related fields and up to two years for qualified graduate students working towards a PhD in marine resource, natural resources or environmental economics.

Sea Grant was established as an institutional program at the University of Hawai'i in 1968. In October 1972, the University of Hawai'i was designated a Sea Grant College for sustained excellence in research, education and public service dedicated to the wise use of America's marine resources. Today, the Hawai'i Sea Grant College Program is housed within the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology on the campus of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. The program is part of a nationwide network of 29 institutional programs of the NOAA National Sea Grant College Program, U.S. Department of Commerce, that promote the understanding, development, sustainable use and conservation of marine resources through university-based research, education, community outreach and communication services.

a craving for crayfish:
minnesota discovers a louisiana tradition
Minnesota lakes and ponds have long yielded crayfish to those who set traps. Today, crayfish are also appearing in northern grocery stores as more people realize that cooked crayfish are tasty and healthful. Crayfish resemble lobsters, but are smaller and have narrower claws. Their flavor is similar, but crayfish meat is sweeter and more tender than lobster. It's also cheaper!
NUTRITIVE VALUE OF CRAYFISH
Crayfish tails are low in calories and high in nutritive value. A quarter-pound serving of crayfish tails contains only 82 calories, compared to 242 calories of ground beef. Crayfish are a good source of calcium, phosphorous, iron and the B vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, and niacin). They provide high-quality protein and all the nutrients necessary for good health. Crayfish are highly digestible. The fibers of crayfish meat are shorter than those of other meat, so crayfish are easier to digest. Crayfish are also relatively low in fat.
OBTAINING CRAYFISH In Louisiana, crayfish can be bought live or already peeled, fresh or frozen. In Minnesota, you can buy them fresh or frozen in some grocery stores or you can trap your own. It takes about 6 to 7 pounds of live crayfish to yield a pound of peeled tails.

Finfish Aquaculture

In Maryland and the mid-Atlantic region, major cultured species are striped bass and their hybrids, catfish and tilapia. Sea Grant Extension specialists are developing materials that will help prospective operators better evaluate issues surrounding the operational efficiency and economic viability of commercial finfish aquaculture. Specialists are also working with growers who have been exploring the development of an innovative cooperative that will combine harvests of cultured fish and wild-caught fish for processing and marketing. Shellfish Aquaculture
Reliance on wild harvests and oyster seed from public grounds, extensive loss of oyster reef habitat through overharvesting and siltation from land runoff, and extensive parasitic disease for nearly a decade have led to the decline of Maryland's public oyster fishery and left the private one in near collapse (see ). While investing in oyster culture is a risky proposition, there are ways to farm oysters and manage around disease, e.g., from moving oysters to lower salinity waters to growing them in off-bottom containers, which can decrease time of exposure to potentially harmful conditions. In this way, marketable oysters can be produced in shorter time periods. Oyster Gardening
The Oyster Gardening Program is a cooperative effort of the Oyster Alliance, which includes the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Maryland Sea Grant Extension Program, the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science and the Oyster Recovery Partnership. The program brings together scientists and citizens to help enhance the Chesapeake Bay system's stressed oyster populations.

Fisheries
Commercial fishing continues to be a significant industry in Washington state, with nearly three billion pounds of fish and shellfish harvested annually, worth more than $1.6 billion at the wholesale level. Commercial fishing is also one of the highest-risk industries in the United States, but few harvesters are trained in the use of safety equipment or emergency procedures, and few training programs are available. Meanwhile commercial fisheries around the world are collapsing, and efforts in fisheries science are turning more to conservation of resources and finding ways to harvest fish stocks in a sustainable manner. Washington Sea Grant Program's Marine Advisory Services address fishing industries in a variety of ways:
  • provide training classes, workshops, and testing for safety certifications; provide education and technical assistance on seafood handling, quality control, safety and use; conduct applied research projects to maximize the use of fisheries resources through control of bycatch.
  • Seabird Bycatch: Trends, Roadblocks and Solutions

This project seeks to develop new methods for the detection and quantification of individual zooplankton species, based on the presence and abundance of characteristic DNA sequences in sample extracts. The investigation will focus on developing and testing methods to detect and quantify DNA from the planktonic larvae of three brachyuran crab species, Sesarma reticulatum (a marsh crab), Menippe adina, and Menippe mercenaria (two stone crab species). The researchers will use both laboratory-raised and field-collected zooplankton.
