It looks as if they did for Maine fishermen who worked hard to establish a permanent whiting grate fishery in the inshore Gulf of Maine. At its Jan. 28-30 meeting here, the New England Fishery Management Council signed off on Framework Adjustment 38 to the groundfish plan, which, if approved by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), will establish a new "exempted grate raised footrope trawl fishery" - possibly by July - in a carefully defined area off mid-coast Maine and eastward (see chart below).

Sea Grant Extension serves as the link between the marine community and the university to help citizens and clientele groups solve problems related to marine resources. Through informal education programs and day-to-day contact, extension staff are able to assist individuals and groups in making informed decisions about the use, development, and conservation of those resources. Extension's efforts are focused on three major areas: commercial fisheries and aquaculture, coastal resource development, and marine science education. In all of these activities, NH Sea Grant works closely with UNH Cooperative Extension Commercial Fisheries and Aquaculture Aquaculture Sea Grant aquaculture extension programs are designed to help both potential and existing aquaculture operations with all aspects of the business. This includes site and species evaluation, culture techniques, nutrition, health management, systems design, marketing, permitting, and business plans for a full range of finfish, shellfish, and seaweed operations. Michigan Sea Grant is a cooperative program of the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. It is one of 29 Sea Grant programs nationwide, including six programs in the Great Lakes states.
Through funding university research and conducting educational programs, Sea Grant helps individuals, local communities, coastal businesses, and state and local agencies to develop Great Lakes and ocean resources and exercise good stewardship in their use. Michigan Sea Grant is funded by the National Sea Grant College Program, a part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce, and by the State of Michigan, with the cooperation of the U.S. Department of Agriculture through Michigan State University Extension. Aquaculture Sea Grant agents assist aquaculturalists through individual consultations, workshops, culture manuals, and a newsletter. Sea Grant has advised the development of important new Michigan aquaculture legislation.

    Research Priorities The research priorities of the New Jersey Sea Grant College Program are both consistent with, and complementary to National Sea Grant College Program's Strategic Plan. Seven relevant areas of research have been identified to meet the long-range needs of New Jersey and the region: ecosystem research, environmental models, coastal zone management, marine technology and development, biotechnology, fisheries and aquaculture, and socioeconomic and legal studies. Ecosystem Research
    • Understanding the source, nature, amount and fate of pollutants (multiple stressors) in New Jersey estuarine systems and their impacts on the environment and its living resources; Understanding the sources, fates, and effects of nutrients entering the marine environment as a result of human activities; Understanding the sources, fates, and effects on aquatic organisms of pathogens and nuisance species that are introduced or influenced by human activities; Determining the impacts of heavy metals, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and other toxic pollutants on human users, residents, and marine plants and animals of coastal ecosystems; Documenting trends in the status of marine ecosystems, including changes in abundance and distribution of organisms;

    Scope and Content Note
    Series I consists of proposals submitted to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the U.S. Dept. of Commerce and the National Science Foundation for Sea Grant program funding, and include budget summaries, research projects progress reports, a program administration narrative, and biographical information on program personnel. These institutional program proposals cover the years 1967 to 1998. This series also contains two proposals for individual projects: "Innovative Marine Biotechnology Harnessing Cellular Machinery," and "Adapting To Change: Fishing Businesses, Families, Communities, and Regions."
    Series II includes a report from the Commission on Sea Grant Goals to the OSU Sea Grant Coordinating Committee, Feb. 1971; a program progress report to NOAA, March 1971; biennial reports for 1971/72-1985/87; and administrative review reports, 1975 and 1986. Also included in this series are completion reports for Fiscal Year 1987-1989 and the Continuation Plan for 1997-1998.Series III contains news releases and clippings from 1966-1971 and 1976-1978 announcing research results, awards, and new staff and faculty appointments. The series also documents the 1968-69 dispute between OSU's Marine Science Center and the University of Oregon's Marine Biology Institute.
    Series IV contains audiotapes of complete Coastwatch radio programs produced and distributed by Sea Grant Communications as well as interviews and individual reports used in those programs. Series V contains records pertaining to the Walter G. Jones Fisheries Development Award, which was established in 1981 as a scholarship to encourage graduate work in fisheries development. Administration of the award was transferred to the Hatfield Marine Science Center in 1991.
