Country Info Senegal Introduction Senegal General Data Senegal Maps Senegal Culture ... Senegal Time and Date Senegal Culture Back to Top Both the rhythm of life in Senegal and the Senegalese mentality have evolved over a long period of time in a setting that was unacquainted with technology in the Western sense of the word. The attitudes of Senegalese in their relations with nature are consequently different from those of Europeans in general. Fear, magic, and collectivism are dominant in traditional Senegalese life. Writing is absent or constitutes at best the prerogative of no more than the few. The cultural heritage is preserved in oral tradition, of which the guardians have been the most experienced, that is to say the oldest, men. Society thus forms a hierarchy, at the summit of which stand the oldest people. Art, sculpture, music, and dance remain typically Senegalese in expression. Sculpture is characterized by abstraction and by the ideogram; a sculptured gazelle, for example, may be represented solely by its horns and its neck, while an elephant may be represented only by the immense fan formed by its ears and its trunk. The Senegalese artist thus neglects the material aspect in order to give free rein to ideas and to feelings. Similarly, in the absence of written music, the imagination of the musician is released. Without falling into the realm of fantasy, the griot (a West African troubadour and historian) recites poems or tells stories of warrior deeds, drawing upon his own sources of inspiration. Both dance and music owe a great deal to improvisation, which, combined with rhythm, produces an intense effect upon the entire community.

W elcome to the AFSANI site of enlightenment and healing. This project is designed to impart information regarding the practice of the Akan Akom Tradition in America. We will also explore other aspects of an ancient culture which is indigenous to Ghana, West Africa and is practiced in other parts of West Africa and the Congo. W e are Africans born in the Diaspora who have willingly and excitedly chosen to follow in the footsteps of our ancestors. We know that our ancestors were brought to the Americas and Caribbean from the West Coast of Africa. We have visited the dungeons in Ghana, Senegal, Ivory Coast and witnessed the inhumane holding conditions of our royal ancestors who were captured and enslaved. Nevertheless they were able to reach these shores thus we, the members of AFSANI, are here honoring them by following the cultural and spiritual traditions as we are taught from the various Palaces and Shrines in Ghana. W e invite you to explore with us the many possibilities and probabilities inherent in your participation in Sankofa!

Like many African tribes, Senegal's main indigenous group, the Wolof, has a highly stratified society wherein status is determined by birth. At the top of the social heap are traditional noble and warrior families, followed by the farmers, traders and persons of caste - blacksmiths, leather workers, wood workers, weavers and griots (GREE-oh). Griots are the lowest of the castes but are highly respected, as they are in charge of passing on the oral traditions and are usually the only ones who can recite a family or village history. They used to be the entertainers of the royal families; these days, if you're fortunate enough to hear a kora played, the player will almost certainly be from a griot family. Slaves occupied the lowest rung of the social ladder, and although slavery is now long gone, many descendants of former slaves still work as tenant farmers for the masters of old. marabouts (holy men), who are thought to link their disciples and Allah. Few people would think of making a big decision without consulting their town's marabout. The food in Senegal is generally very good. Regional specialities include

The rich mosaic of cultural heritage derives from the ethnic diversity that is portrayed by the Mandinka, Fulani, Serer, Tukulor, Wolof and Jola people. The ancestors of some of these tribes migrated from as far as the Niger River Valley. The ancestors of the Tukulorís, who founded the Tekrur Kingdom, had extensive contact with the Berbers from North Africa due to the Trans-Saharan trade. This commercial interaction played a central role in the advent of the Islamic religion in West Africa. Today, the Senegalese religious landscape is comprised mainly of Sunni Muslims. The Great Mosque at Touba is a destination point for religious pilgrimages. The Senegambian region was an important source of Slaves during the Transatlantic Slave Trade. During that era, the Portuguese, Dutch and French, all had an active involvement in the region. The presence of European influence is very evident in the architectural design of the coastal forts utilized in the Slave Trade and other commercial activities. The infamous Goree Island,ìMaison Des Esclavesî which lies less than 2 miles from Dakar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, dedicated as a memorial to the abomination, which was Slavery. The view from the ìDoor of No Return.î was the last one of Africa etched into the memory of slaves shipped to the Americas. The Forts on the island serve as Historic Museums. French influence can be seen beyond the architectural design of the carved wooden balconies and verandas of French colonial homes, the French flavor in Senegalese cuisine and French music in popular culture. Senegalese musicians Baba Maal and Yossou Nour serve as international ambassadors to the region through performances at various international venues. The country also has a noticeable amount of Arab influences.

Snapshot of Senegal Senegal, which is situated in the westernmost part of the African continent, has more than 8 million inhabitants and covers an area of 196 722 sq km. It is bordered by Guinea Bissau, the other Guinea, Mali and Mauritania. Contrary to many other African countries, Senegal is rarely in the news since the political situation is stable (elections are to be held this month) and people of different ethnic groups and religions usually live in harmony. The majority of the population are Muslim : 90%, the rest being made up of 5% Christian and 5% animist (a religion of nature whereas the other two were imported). Having been colonized by France, Senegal, which gained independence in 1960, has kept French for administration, business and general use, but most people (80%) understand wolof, the language of the majority ethnic group. The capital of Senegal, Dakar, a peninsula swept all year by trade winds from the sea, is a trading center for the whole of West Africa. A FEW HISTORICAL FACTS Dakar, which was already was a center for commerce, even during the slave trade, which was carried on intensively between 1550 and 1850. Slavery existed in this region before the arrival of the white man, with some tirbes probably practising it more than others. Slaves were part of the spoils of war when one kingdom became the suzerain of another. But this trade had never reached the extent it did after the arrival of westernners.

    Water and Culture
by Rebbecca and Jay Wozny , Saare Oumar, Senegal Superstitions about water abound. For example, if there is a problem with a well, the villagers say that there is a genie in the well. And, if there's a genie in the well, no one will use iteven if it's full of clean water. Another ceremony that involves water is tea-making. It is a daily event and an important aspect of Senegalese culture As a group sits in the shade of a tree and talks, one person pours tea from cup to cup, making foam. The entire process can take up to three hours. This tea-making ceremony gives Senegalese time to relax and enjoy one another's company. Occasionally, people fall into a well. Although adults or bigger children may survive with a few scratches or a nose full of water, small children usually drown. Again, this is attributed to a genie. by Catherine Guillard , Samba Diarry, Senegal by Enid Abrahami , Missirah Tabadian, Senegal I celebrated my 30th birthday in the small village of Missirah Tabadian. I'll never forget it! Weeks were spent in preparationshopping, cleaning, cooking, planning. Finally the day arrived. I woke up at 7:00 am to the steady rhythms of women pounding grain for the day's festivities. Already at this early hour my compound was filled with women from neighboring villages who had come to clean, chop, stir, pound, and cook. Without a doubt, it was a memorable 30th birthday.
