Work at Home Citizens' High School is an accredited, independent study high school completion program that is Nationally Accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council, Washington D.C. Citizens' High School was founded in the summer of 1981 to provide people who had not completed their high school education a challenging, high quality, affordable method to earn their diploma. Citizens' program is individualized instruction using correspondence for communication between the school and the student.
Our student body is comprised of students who range in age from young teenagers to senior citizens who come from all social and economic backgrounds. We serve a variety of special groups: teenagers from home school families in all 50 states; children of American families living overseas; students unable to pursue their education in a residential setting due to unique personal reasons, family or work commitments, illness, or handicaps; and professional athletes and entertainers.
Citizens' 9th - 12th grade curriculum is designed to give each student enrolled in either the general studies or the advanced/academic program of study a solid foundation in the basic academic areas of English, math, science, and social studies.

Cornell grad student's 'horticulture-as-therapy' program takes learning to the HILT

ITHACA, N.Y. The boredom and isolation of life in a nursing home, the shortage of mentors for inquisitive children, the need for more greenery in the world all can be addressed through intergenerational cooperation, according to a Cornell University horticulturist with a plan to send senior citizens back to school. Horticulture Intergenerational Learning as Therapy (HILT) came about because Vincent Lalli, a schoolteacher-turned-graduate-student in Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, hated to see keen minds and skilled hands idle. The result: Adults in their 80s and 90s are visiting schools to teach kids about plants, using a hands-on science curriculum developed by Cornell educators and horticulturists. "Unfortunately, society doesn't have very high expectations for the elderly, especially those in the nursing homes," said Lalli, an elementary and middle school teacher for 30 years. "These people are like jewels. They're a treasure, and they're starved for opportunities to share their wisdom and their skills." At least that's what Lalli hoped when he approached nursing home administrators with what he now acknowledges is a far-out idea: Why not transport seniors to local schools for part of a day and let them work, one-on-one, with children in plant science projects? To his surprise, several nursing homes in upstate New York agreed, and so did school administrators and teachers.

It's bad enough that Israeli doctors are spending their lives in emergency rooms treating Jewish and Arab victims of suicide bombers. What really makes them heartsick these days, however, is that they also have to fend off mindless attacks from their scientific colleagues, particularly in Europe. That was the most gut-wrenching impression I returned with after a recent trip to Israel along with 70 other senior physicians from across America. We had gone to bolster the spirits of our Israeli colleagues, exhausted and bewildered from two years of the relentless experience of treating victims of terror. We arrived at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, where some 2,000 victims have been treated, less than 24 hours after a particularly horrific bus bombing in Jerusalem. Hours earlier, teams of Jewish-Arab doctors had done what they've done for the past two years: jumped into action to save the lives of the critically injured. On Israeli television the night before, the father of the homicidal bomber bragged that he was proud of his son who had attacked a busload of schoolchildren and senior citizens. On the day we arrived, that same father suffered chest pains and was brought to Hadassah. He was seen by the same doctors who were still treating the victims of his son's madness.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Family Life Education certificate program is modeled after the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) CFLE Standards and Criteria. The goal of the program is to prepare students to provide Family Life Education programs in schools, churches, youth programs, family service agencies, and other areas of the community. A core belief of the program is that even credentialed and experienced teachers can be unprepared or under-prepared to teach the subjects subsumed under Family Life Education. The certificate program is designed to cover the ten family life substance areas delineated and required by NCFR. (See list below). While the program is designed to assist students in obtaining provisional Certifications through NCFR, a campus certificate is awarded upon graduation provided all certificate and degree requirements have been fulfilled. Note: This program is taken concurrently with established degree requirements. The majority of courses for the certificate program are applicable toward course requirements for a degree in Family and Consumer Sciences. The certificate is not a teaching credential. In conjunction with a BA or MA degree or a state teaching credential, it may be helpful in obtaining employment as a Family Life Educator.

Health/Science News N.J. Senate Reaches Malpractice Compromise By LINDA A. JOHNSON / Associated Press Democrats and Republicans in the state Senate have reached the broad outlines of a compromise meant to ease the malpractice insurance crisis and prevent more doctors from closing their practices. The deal was worked out Tuesday in a closed-door meeting as more than 4,000 doctors rallied in front of the Statehouse in a cold, steady rain, chanting, "Tort reform now!" The rally marked the second day of a work slowdown in which many doctors have withheld non-urgent care to protest skyrocketing malpractice insurance premiums. The compromise would likely set a $300,000 limit on pain-and-suffering damages paid by malpractice insurers, said Sen. Joseph R. Vitale, co-chair of the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee. Extra money to pay larger malpractice awards and settlements would come from a new catastrophic trust fund. The fund would be built from an annual surcharge on health insurers of $2 to $3 for each person they cover, plus fees amounting to $15 a year for each New Jersey doctor and lawyer. "It's just a matter of working out the details," Vitale said. He said a bill could be ready by next week for a vote.

Letters of the 107th Congress, 1st Session
Congressman Dennis Kucinich has consistently voted against tax increases and has supported tax cuts and tax credits for a wide variety of purposes. The American People’s Dividend As Chairman of the Progressive Caucus, Rep. Kucinich advocated for a tax cut plan that would give every man, women, and child an equal tax dividend of $300. Unlike the tax relief passed into law, this plan would have given the top 1% of income earners, exactly 1% of the tax cut. Every person should benefit from a tax cut. Unfortunately, children and senior citizens were largely ignored by the tax rebate checks mailed in the summer of 2001. Simplifying Family Tax Credits Representative Kucinich is crafting legislation to reform the Earned Income Tax Credit designed to help working lower class families. Under the new proposal, several tax credits will be rolled into one to ease the complexity of the family tax credit. The proposal also significantly expands the benefits of the tax credit, while retaining the incentive to work. By providing increased benefits to working low income families, they can pull themselves out of poverty. However, all families will benefit from the expanded tax credit.

A Perfect Time To Showcase The
May offered the Hillsborough County Department of Aging Services a golden opportunity to focus on the achievements and contributions seniors make in our community. A month-long celebration of singing, dancing, dining and health-related forums was kicked off on May 1, and extended through the month with a whirlwind calendar of fun and events.
The 19th Annual Senior Prom, sponsored by the Senior Adult Day Care Program, was a huge success. A team of professionals and caregivers led the festivities, which included health, social, supportive and therapeutic day services for seniors and functionally impaired adults. Participants from all of the Hillsborough County Senior Adult Day Care centers had the unique opportunity to meet, mix and mingle in one location. This year, the prom was held at the Brandon Recreation Center, located at 501 E. Sadie St. The theme was nautical, and the event was certainly smooth sailing for all who came to participate. Doris McDonald and Robert Fields held regal honors during the prom after they were crowned the King and Queen.
