General information
This page concentrates on links to inter-IC serial buses. When this page talks about 2-wire or 3-wire interfaces, this wire number is the number of control lines. In addition to this those interfaces generally need a common ground, which is the ground plane in circuit board applications and a seprate wire in inter-circuit-board connections. The serial bus interfaces are widely used for interfacing EEPROMs, data converters and many peripheral chips to microcontrollers. They are also often used for inter-microcontroller communication. Serial bus system are also used to build control buses inside equipments like TV receivers, AV amplifiers and cellular phones. The major advantage of usign s serial bus is the small number of wires needed. A major disadvantage of serial interfacing is the tradeoff of speed for space. The processor’s I/O port spends a relatively large amount of time communicating with a serial device. Consequently, serial converters with throughput rates above 500 ksps are uncommon.

New Video and Serial Buses promise much improved performance
by Alan Zisman (c) 1997. First published in Canadian Computer Wholesaler, April 1997 For the past few months, we’ve been looking at up-and-coming hardware changes—ways that the computers that you’ll be selling as 1997 progresses will be ‘new and improved’ over last year’s models. Not just faster, but implementing new technologies to let users do more in a simpler way than in the turbo-charged super-ATs that we’ve all become accustomed to. We’ve seen how Intel’s MMX chips are adding the first major change to the processor’s instruction set since 1985’s 386. And how USB—Universal Serial Bus—will let users add peripherals with ease. Well, get ready for yet another computer industry three-letter acronym… in this case, AGP. AGP is another Intel innovation—in this case, standing for Accelerated Graphics Port. It’s designed to get around a potential problem with another three-letter acronym from Intel, the PCI bus. The PCI bus is the high-speed internal expansion bus on the current generation of PCs, and now on PowerMacs as well. Its 132 MBps bandwidth provides lots of room for future growth for hard drives, network adapters, almost anything we care to throw at it. Except for video.

Purchasing Hardware
Choose the hardware products you need from the NI Instrumentation Catalog , which can be found on-line in the NI Web catalog or discuss your needs with the CERN LabVIEW Support team.
From the National Instruments Online Store http://www.ni.com/store/ you can get detailed product specifications and view the price information in $U.S, Euro and CHF. As a general rule there is a CERN discount applicable to the NI-CH list price for all hardware (cables, adapters and upgrades are not included) as well as for NI software ordered for CERN users. You can fill out and send an internal purchase request EDH-DAI , by using Supplier Code (not NAT145) and apply the discount as described under "Licences/Prices"
GPIB Interfaces The HP-IB, or HP Interface Bus, a message based 1MBy/sec bus, was introduced by Hewlett-Packard in 1965 as an efficient method of interconnecting laboratory instruments. In 1975, the HP-IB became the popular IEEE-488 standard, also called General Purpose Interface Bus GPIB. Several revisions have extended its features and speed. National Instruments has a family of

The architecture of RoboCube
Overview
RoboCube is build on an open bus system. As shown in the figure below a global bus comprises several sub-buses which are managed from different sources. Block diagram of the RoboCube architecture The system is logically divided into four subsystems:
  • The processor subsystem contains the Motorola MC68332 microcontroller. It provides the address bus, data bus, special timing channels (TP), interrupt lines (/IRQ), several chip selects (/CS), an SPI bus and a RS232 serial bus. The memory subsystem contains the boot ROM as well as the main memory. The extension busmaster subsystem provides two serial RS232 buses and two I2C buses for which a broad variety of sensors and actuators ICs are available. The I/O subsystem contains all the interfaces needed in our current control for the robots.
  • To get the smallest possible setup which is nevertheless flexible the processor and memory subsystem are placed on the same printed circuit board. The following subsections describe the different subsystems mentioned in the above item list.
