Seychelles Do Tourism Right, Traveler Editor Says Molly Feltner
for National Geographic News
October 17, 2002
Visit the Seychelles, an archipelago of 115 remote islands off the coast of Africa, and you'll find hardly a footprint in the sand. The islands have remained largely untouched and unchanged over the years because of enlightened tourism policies. Traveler Editor in Chief Keith Bellows, having just returned from a trip to the Seychelles, talks about why this corner of the world is truly remarkable and why it just might stay that way. What's the best way to experience the Seychelles? By water. When you stand on the beach and look out, you see the amazing blue of the water, and that's all very well. But when you get on a boat, you see the Seychelles in a completely different way. These are islands seen from the water that have a sort of Robinson Crusoe-like quality. On many, there's no human presence; they're totally, totally pristine. A giant tortoise on one of the islands of the Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles Islands moves about in search of roughage.

74. Seychelles History
The British allowed the French language and culture remain. For the next 150years seychelles was isolated from the world except the European Powers.
http://tps.dpi.state.nc.us/connectafrica/seychelles/history.html
Seychelles Click here to return to the Seychelles page... History of Seychelles Seychelles was a lonely island in the middle of the ocean until about the 17th century when some pirates found the island then for several years it was a rather large pirate base. Then around 1742 the governor of Mauritius started to take interest in the Seychelles islands. So the governor decided to send a guy by the name of Picault to take his men down to Seychelles to check out the islands. After Picault got there he named the largest island Mah'e after the govenor's last name. He then laid away for the French to find the islands 12 years later. But it wasn't until 15 years later that the French actually started to settle on the islands. They started growing, spices, cassava, sugarcane, coffee, sweet potatoes, and, maize. It wasn't until the 18th century that the British took any interest. The French governor, DeQuinssy at Seychelles knew the British wanted to take over so he lowered the French flag at Seychelles and was willing to surrender but the British paid no attention to them. So DeQuinssy put the flag back up. This was repeated for 12 times until 1814 when the British took over after the Napoleonic War. The British allowed the French language and culture remain. For the next 150 years Seychelles was isolated from the world except the European Powers. That was a very important time for Seychelles. During that time they developed their won traditions, language, and culture. Then in 1964 the first political party was formed. In 1976 the country became independent. Albert Rene who started the Peoples United party is still the leader of Seychelles today.
