T he P eople Mauritius has a population of more than 1,100,000 citizens and has one of the greatest population densities…1,500 people per square mile…in the world. More than half of its people are Hindu and another 16% are Muslim, both groups descended from the imported plantation laborers. Some 30,000 of Chinese origin arrived as small entrepreneurs and the bulk of the remaining population are “Creoles,” descendents of the African slaves. A tiny portion are the “Franco-Mauritians” from the original European settlers, and these are the wealthiest citizens, owning the plantation and the larger businesses. The island projects an image of racial and social harmony between its diverse groups; however in actual practice, there is little intermixing. Officially, the national languages are English, for the conduct of business and government, and French for educated, social and media circles. In addressing a visitor, French will be the first language option, then English. The island’s shared common language is Creole, which is quite similar to the Creole spoken in Seychelles and in other post-colonial cultures. Creole’s roots came from a simplified French used to communicate between sugar cane plantation owners and workers. It is a vibrant and growing language, spoken with enthusiasm. Most Indo-Mauritians also speak a derivative dialect of Hindi.

Arab traders were probably the earliest visitors to the islands; long before the Portuguese sailed by in 1502. France claimed the uninhabited islands some two hundred and fifty years later, and moved in with their slaves in the late 1700's. Country Info Seychelles Introduction Seychelles General Data Seychelles Maps Seychelles Culture ... Seychelles Time and Date Seychelles History Back to Top Possibly known to the Arabs as early as the 9th century ad, the Seychelles were visited by the Portuguese in 1502. In 1756 France claimed the islands, which were then uninhabited, and French planters and their slaves settled on them, beginning in 1768. In 1794 Great Britain annexed the Seychelles. The islands were administered from Mauritius during most of the 1800s, and in 1903 they were made a separate British dependency. Political parties, chief of which were the Democratic Party led by James Mancham and the SPPF headed by Albert René, began to form in the 1960s. Their agitation resulted in a new constitution in 1967, and three years later a ministerial form of government was established. By 1974 both major parties were united in calling for independence, although otherwise bitterly antagonistic. When independence was achieved, on June 29, 1976, a coalition republican government was formed, with Mancham as president and René as prime minister.

As a result of the earlier advocacy of Dr. Dany Adone (whom I first met in Miami at the 4 th International Creole Language Workshop in March 1998 and who chaired the June 1999 Creole Orthography Workshop in France), I was invited by Mme Penda Choppy (Director of Lenstiti Kreol in Seychelles, whom I met for the first time in France in June) to participate in a Creole Language Symposium in Seychelles, which was to be held in conjunction with the 14 th Annual Festival Kreol from October 23-31, 1999.
