However, it is not enough to merely recognize the places and beings of supernatural world. To gain full control over the vision, it must be described in words - to sing or retell it. For singing or retelling one's experiences means giving a more traditional form to an individual experience. Individuals who are acquainted since early childhood with shamanic tradition have naturally more necessary knowledge for expressing in words their visions than other people. It is during the initiation period that the devotee acquires most of his songs - descriptions of helping spirits and journeys. A son often applies the melodies of his father's or grandfather's shaman songs.
An active traditionary control over shaman visions continues after the initiation period is over. In case of an experienced shaman, this is expressed by guessing or so-called 'quest for the right path' taking place during rituals. With the help of such guessing untypical or inappropriate elements are eliminated from the shaman actions. Advice sought by the shamans from people who have a good knowledge of the tradition in a difficult situation is also a part of the traditionary control. Often, an experienced shaman has to continue recognizing and naming objects and beings of the supernatural world during the rites. For example, Tubyaku Kosterkin, a Nganasan shaman, had three helping spirits called

Hawaiian shamanism exploring reality. A listing of these tools doesn't constitutea precise meaning of the limits and uniqueness of shamanism.
http://www.hawaiian.net/~larryw/html/shaman.html
What is a Shaman?
A Philosophical Approach
I am using the word shaman because of its popularity: Shamans have their own names for themselves depending on their background and location. I call myself kupua, which is a Hawaiian word for a shaman found among the traditions of Polynesia. A kupua focuses on the essence of a tool rather than it's ritual. There are many definitions of shamanism, but few mention the core of shamanistic belief that I learned from my teachers. Most definitions describe what shamans do rather than what shamans believe . Shamans use whatever tools they know that seem appropriate for the circumstances. A listing of these tools doesn't constitute a precise meaning of the limits and uniqueness of shamanism. Almost all books on shamanism, both scholarly works and popular books written by "shamans", are about shaman tools and descriptions of so-called shamanistic ideas are presented in a very unshamanistic way: Shaman ideas are described as if shamans believed them. This limited view of shamanism is understandable since shamans, when talking to non-shamans and beginning students, avoid frustrating attempts to discuss the unreality of reality. two distinct traditions . There were Druids also that were shamans, but in both cases they were rare. And, as might be guessed, there were (and are) shamans in Polynesia and Celtic areas that are not kahuna or druids. A shaman is a healer but there are few shamans among healers; today and even in the distant past.

Check here for updates, or at www.autonomedia.org Look there for my first book, Pioneer of Inner Space: The Life of Fitz Hugh Ludlow, Hasheesh Eater. In 1978, a vice president at Chase Manhattan Bank named R. Gordon Wasson, together with an eclectic group of scientists and scholars, published a book entitled The Road to Eleusis. The authors argued that the kykeon beverage consumed during the Eleusinian mysteries, the primary religious rite of Greco-Roman civilization, contained an hallucinogenic, or "entheogenic", barley fungus called claviceps purpurea. The testimony of a significant number of young and not so young people in the 1960's and since have testified to the religious nature of drugs, especially LSD, which not so coincidentally is based on ergot, the same alkaloid found in claviceps purpurea. Walter Pahnke conducted the famous "Good Friday Experiment" with a group of Harvard Divinity School students, most of whom had a religious experience far deeper than any in their lives before or since. What could be the connection between religion and entheogens?

These Huna Web Pages have a special purpose, and that is to invite you to be a part of the Shamanic resurgence that is sweeping the planet. In case you hadn't noticed, there is a great rekindling of the fires of Huna spirituality that lit the ways for the peoples of the earth centuries ago.
Just stop for a moment and ask yourself, "What am I doing here?" No, not on the web, but on the planet! Perhaps it is to return to spirit!
Huna is the word for this teaching in Hawai'i, and the Ka-huna knew that...
"The only way you can have your life exactly the way you want it, is to be connected to Spirit." There are many esoteric paths, there are many teachers, and many ways to the light. Ultimately they all lead to the same place within you, to the great light, which is the source of consciousness. Know this all the ancient teachings are One. In seeking the ancient way look for the similarities NOT the differences. As a true student of Huna...one would know that:

The world is as we dream it. When we give energy to our visions, they materialize. At times like these of great turmoil, challenges and crises, it is especially important to understand this process and to realize that we have the power to change the dream . Sometimes we find that what we thought was a dream turns out to be a fantasy, or even a nightmare. We have the power to change it. Dream Change Coalition was founded in the early 1990's during meetings between indigenous communities and John Perkins. Today its guiding council is composed of Dr. Eve Bruce, Lyn Roberts-Herrick, Mary Tendall and John Perkins, along with other shamans , indigenous elders and Master Teachers . The heart of DCC is its members those who are part of the ePOLE and Agent of Change programs and who take responsibility for all the incredible projects they have dreamed and brought into the world. DCC's mission is to:
  • To inspire sustainability and earth-honoring changes in consciousness;
  • To conserve rainforests and the world's natural places;
  • To apply indigenous wisdom in ways that foster environmental, economic, and social balance;

    SHAMANISM IN THE NATIVE
    BON TRADITION OF TIBET
    By Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche
    Shamanism, an ancient Tradition found in cultures throughout the world, values a balanced relationship between humanity and Nature. Because of the recent alarming increase in pollution and exploitation of the environment, along with the consequential negative ramifications, such as the emergence of new illnesses, it has become even more important for humankind to recover the principle of harmony central to Shamanism in order to repair the damage done to the Earth, as well as to save people and Nature from negativity and illness.
    There is an ancient Tibetan myth on the origin of negativity that recounts the causes of illness:
    From the vast voidness wherein nothing exists, there arose light, Nangwa Oden (Appearance with Light), and also darkness. Male darkness, Munpa Zerden (Rays of Darkness) lay with female darkness, Munji Gyatso (Ocean of Darkness), and by their union whe gave birth to a poisonous egg.
    This egg was hatched by the force of its own energy and steam issued into the sky, giving rise to the negative energy of space. Thunder, hail and planetary disturbances came into existence. The albumen spilled onto the Earth and polluted it, giving rise to naga-derived illnesses such as physical handicaps, leprosy and skin diseases. The shell gave rise to harmful weapons and infectious diseases, and the disturbances and illnesses of humans and animals came forth from the membrane. From the yolk essence there came forth Chidag Nagpo (Black Life-Stealing Fiend) with bulging wrathful eyes, gnashing teeth, and matted hair with blood rising into the sky like a cloud, holding the black cross (of evil power) in his right hand and the disease-dispensing lasso in his left.

    Shamanism is an occult path claiming contact with supernatural entities for a variety of religious or, today, even secular purposes. Traditional shamanism is where the shaman functions as healer, spiritual leader, and mediator between the spirits and people. Shamanistic psychotherapy, a novel form of modern fringe psychology, is where shamanistic techniques are employed allegedly to produce "psychospiritual integration," explore the unconscious, contact one’s "higher self," and so on. Shamanistic medicine includes the application of animistic and various ancient witchcraft techniques to health care. It may involve either shamanism itself as a means to health and enlightenment (shaman initiation and following the shaman’s "life path"), or the varied use of specific shamanistic techniques in conjunction with a particular health program (e.g., visualization, altered states of consciousness, dream work, or the use of "power animals," which are spirits that appear in the form of animals, birds, or other creatures in order to instruct the shaman).
