PO Box 417 Pine CO 80470 mail@cheyennemaloney.com Webmistress Karen: karendiane designs web design and management While the definition of shamanism is both vast and elusive, the definition of a shaman is: "One who travels to non-ordinary realities to gain information for an individual or a community." This information may pertain to and be used for many things such as advice, guidance, decision making, problem solving, enlightenment, and healing. Shamanism is the oldest known healing modality and is recorded over 40,000 years into our past. Men as early as Cro-Magnon utilized a primary shamanistic tool, the drum, which is used by the shaman not as a musical instrument, but as a vehicle for travel to non-ordinary realities. Shamanism is used on every continent of our planet and the reasons for that are simple. It is widely used and has lasted the test of time because it works. Its techniques, while seemingly complex, are simple, efficient, and surprisingly effective. While shamanic traditions evolved on each continent and may appear a the surface as unrelated to each other, a deeper glimpse reveals more. The deepest roots of shamanism seem to stem from Siberia and the far north. We may think of the Sami shaman wrapped in leather and fur, exhibiting a light hearted and somewhat comical nature with his tattered drum and smiling face. We may think of a loin-clothed native in a Southern Hemisphere tropical jungle, using special plants of healing. We may think of an Alaskan shaman listening to the spirit within an ivory carving. We may think of a Sonoran shaman communing with elusive desert spirits. Or, we may think of the Native American culture, offering themselves to the Stone People Lodge, the Sweat Lodge, or drumming great drums in call to that which is normally beyond us.

ZEN, THE BUDDHA AND SHAMANISM
Shamanism:
The coming warmth of the morning sun softly caresses the flower's unopened petals. As the flower expands to engulf the sun's rays, the prior night's dew slowly dissipates.
The sun gives freely, neither asking for nor expecting a return. Knowing it is neither gift nor taking, the flower blossoms without fear, gently adding it's own beauty and sense of being to it's surroundings and to those fortunate enough to pass within it's presence.
Enlightenment and Shamanism in their own way are similar...however, even for those that thus come, though the ancient bristlecone pine and the desert's saguaro cactus are great and noble entities, the pinetree's seed dropped at the saguaro's foot will not take root, nor the saguaro's seed at the pinetree's foot. Magnificent as each is, something else needs be done...

http://www.wicca.com/celtic/wyldkat/shmnindex.htm
Greetings my friends,
Shamanism is a set of tools and techniques used to interact with the spirit world and the world around us. It has no specific pantheon of gods and is attached to no particular culture. It is a way of looking at the world and at yourself. There are no hard set rules, no hierarchy to try and work through. Shamanism is the oldest known form of spiritual practice. It is a time-tested practice, what works is kept, what doesn’t is left behind. When our ancient ancestors prayed that the spirit of the Deer would come to them allowing them a good hunt, they were using shamanic techniques although I am sure that was not the word they used to describe it.
Shamanism is a personal quest for knowledge and inner power, but it is a quest that has traditionally taken place within the confines of a tribe or family group. The same holds true for those who follow a shamanic path today, but our groups might be different. We could work to guide and aid our family or a group of friends or a pagan circle. These groups are just as valid and appropriate a place for a modern person walking a shamanic path as a tribe was to an ancient one. A shaman's place is within a community, not apart from it.
Shamans have held an important place in many different cultures throughout the world since our beginnings. They have been mediators, ceremonialists, healers, diviners, many different kinds of artists and much more. They learn and work with power for both themselves and the good of those around them. They understand the connection and need for balance amongst all things, that all aspects of the world that we share with the rest of creation is alive, humans, animals, plants, rocks, and even the wind.

http://www.spiritweavers.com/shamanism.html
The roots of all cultures can be traced back to earth-centered spirituality. Before the formalized religions of the world, people lived by the seasons and cycles of the sun, moon and earth, knowing the balance of the earth and the sun, the physical and the spiritual. The physical, earthly plane and the spiritual, etheric plane where both seen as equal expressions of Life. Shamans knew how to travel between these two worlds to gather information and bring healing to their communities. Today, we can begin to reclaim the power of shamanism and incorporate its wisdom into our modern world. By exploring and integrating our shamanic powers, we bring wisdom and magic back into our lives. Shamans honor the four elements of air, fire, water, and earth, and know how to use the essence of each to create a stable foundation for the healing of self and others. Shamans listen to the flow of energy rather than working against it. Shamans are warriors, dedicated to serving the life force. By stepping back to the our roots, we step into a future guided by the principles of nature. We can learn to dance between the crack of the worlds, finding freedom and harmony no matter where we are. Shamanism brings us back to our center, back to our own heartbeat, to the magic of our individual song. Wiccan shamanism offers the tools of ritual and balance, while Toltec shamanism brings the wisdom of energy awareness and powerful tools for transformation.
