3. Shark
sharks are built cruise slowly through the water for long distances.
http://www.germantown.k12.il.us/html/shark2.html
Grade 2 Ocean Project
Sharks Imagine swimming leisurely in the refreshing ocean water on a beautiful sunny afternoon. You turn towards the shore , and you see that you have gone farther out than you planned. That's when you start thinking about what might be swimming along side you. You frantically start swimming back to shore as you are trying not to think about the fierce teeth, powerful jaws, and sleek body cruising the surface behind you. You safely make it back to shore only to realize that you narrowly escaped being attacked by a shark. S harks ruled the oceans even before dinosaurs roamed the land. They have been around for about 400 million years. There are over species of sharks. They live all over the ocean, in cold to temperate waters, usually cooler than 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Almost all sharks are carnivores, eating dolphins, seals, sharks, and other fish. They are cold-blooded animals. This means that their bodies change temperature as the water's temperature changes. Sharks are built cruise slowly through the water for long distances. A shark's skeleton is made of cartilage which is tough and flexible, similar to a human's ear, and it has 5 to 7 pairs of gill slits. These slits help the shark to absorb oxygen from the water into the bloodstream. Its skin is like a spiky suit of armor. You can be injured by simply touching the shark. These teethlike scales, or denticles, are shed and replaced just as the teeth in their powerful jaws are.

Costa Rica's Cocos Island boasts more sharks per cubic yard of water than perhaps any other place on the planet, including whitetip reef sharks, 40-foot whale sharks, and hammerheads that school by the hundreds. On this latest NOVA/PBS Online Adventure, we joined Howard and Michele Hall, two of the world's leading underwater filmmakers, as they dove into this shark-infested paradise to shoot an IMAX large-format film.

Introduction
This may sound like an over dramatisation but in the 50s and 60s it was considered dangerous to go diving because of Sharks, then in the 70s night diving was considered a maniacs' sport again because of the "shark menace".
These pages are also dedicated to education. My main aim has changed since I started these pages. Originally the aim was Information and Conservation. Now the purpose of these pages are :
  • Information
  • Education
  • Conservation
Lots of parents, pupils and teachers have emailed me (thanx I like hearing about this) to tell me about the projects they are doing. I have had a lot of positive feedback telling me that the pages are easy to understand. I aim to expand and move these pages with a view to them being an educational resource. I would also really love it if anyone writing projects on sharks or conservation for school would send me their work later to put on the web as a further resource and example.
These pages will cover items such as shark habitats, physiology, the danger to sharks from "man attack" and something about shark attack on man, because this does happen though not to the extent the media would have us believe.

... Shop or Compare Prices Sharks are surely one of the most fearsome creatures on Earth. But they are also one of the most sophisticated and enduring. The oldest shark fossils date from more than 300 million years ago, before the age of the dinosaurs. And a few existing shark species, such as the hornshark, have kept the same basic physical characteristics for more than 150 million years. Photo courtesy Carl Roessler A rare, tiger ragged-tooth shark, photographed off the coast of Columbia Scientists attribute this remarkable longevity to the shark's superior physiological developments. Sharks are outfitted with several special characteristics that make them highly effective, both as hunters and survivors. In this edition of HowStuffWorks , we'll examine these unique qualities to see why the shark is top dog in the ocean.

They never really sleep, never stop swimming and are always ready to attack! A attack consists of a type of musical performance, commonly referred to in the reefs as Surf Music. This type of shark attack was witnessed in great proportions primarily in Southern California in the early 1960s. For a time, it was thought these attacks had all but dissappeared from both coastal and inland terrain. However, recently, these Surf Music attacks have been documented by anthropologists as being on the rise once again. Alarmingly, these most recent attacks have been noted worldwide and there is no sign of the phenomenon going away. are a unique subspecies of particular curiosity to anthropologists and elasmologists. They are particularly immune to shark repellant and the species is expected to survive into the 21st century....

    What is a Shark?
Sharks are a type of fish.
Sharks are amazing fish that have been around since long before the dinosaurs existed. They live in waters all over the world, in every ocean, and even in some rivers and lakes.
Unlike bony fish, sharks have no bones; their skeleton is made of cartilage, which is a tough, fibrous substance, not nearly as hard as bone. Sharks also have no swim bladder (like bony fish do).

    http://www.ozemail.com.au/~bilsons/SHARKS.htm
OUR HOME PAGE ALL ABOUT SHARKS Like many scuba divers, I enjoy watching Sharks and learning about their behaviour. Hopefully these pages will finally become a forum where divers can add interesting information and we can all get a better understanding of these magnificent creatures. GENERAL INFORMATION THE REAL JAWS SHARK BOOKS SPECIES INFORMATION ... SHARK STORIES GENERAL INFORMATION There seems to be two main views on sharks. Those that think there are hundreds of Great White Sharks waiting to eat people at the shoreline and those that think that sharks are not really dangerous and want to pet them. I think a view somewhere between these two would be more realistic. It should be remembered that all sharks can bite, just like all fish can bite. Apart from any actual damage, just the fright of getting bitten by a large fish can panic a diver. If you don't touch them and don't chase them you should have no problems. The sharks that can really do a lot of damage to humans are the ones with large triangular shaped upper teeth with serrated edges. These teeth are made for tearing flesh. Long pointy teeth are made for holding prey before swallowing. That's why sharks with long, narrow teeth don't consider divers their dinner! We're just too big. But that doesn't mean they can't do a lot of damage or in extreme cases even kill. However, when you think about the millions of surfers, swimmers, snorklers, and divers that go into our oceans, it is amazing that not more people are attacked. It really goes to show that most sharks are not interested in attacking us.

sharks Great and Small Dive deep under the ocean's surface to learn allabout these aquatic creatures. The Secret World of sharks and Rays.
    http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/sharks/
NATURE lifts part of the veil of mystery shrouding some fascinating and often fearsome creatures in "The Secret World of Sharks and Rays."
Sharks and their biological cousins, the rays, are among the highest-profile denizens of the deep, thanks to the popularity of books and films that have cast them in leading roles as antagonist, not protagonist.
But despite such worldwide media glare, sharks and rays are among the least-understood creatures that inhabit the world's oceans. It's a paradox: a high public profile overshadowing a relatively low level of knowledge about these primordial fish, whose existence pre-dates the emergence of humans by some 400 million years.
