Swimming With Sharks
Most of the time, I fear I am blending the line between cult and indie on this site, and this article is no exception. Yes, Swimming with Sharks is an indie film, starring (then) indie actors, made in less than three weeks for less than a million bucks. Then again, the reason that not a lot of people went to see this movie when it came out wasn't because it was indie, but because it's A, not the kind of movie that would get heavily promoted by any distributor who doesn't want to burn every bridge in existence, and B, not the kind of movie that's going to appeal to everyone. Like The Player , another slice of Hollywood noir, Swimming with Sharks is the kind of dark, smart movie where insights are aplenty but likable characters are few. In fact, by the end of the film, it's not clear whether every major character is just

'SCUBA DIVING IN AUSTRALIA' INDEX HOME PAGE SHARK SPECIES INDEX MAIN SHARK PAGE ... SHARK STORIES WEIRD SHARKS MEGAMOUTH SHARK Megachasma Pelagios This shark is extremely rare. It was first identified in 1976 and a new shark family had to be recorded. Only twelve have ever been found world-wide. One of these was in Australian waters. (Mandurah, West Australia). This specimen was beach stranded. Five have been sighted in Japan, two in California, USA, one in Brasil, South America, One in Senegal, Africa and one in Hawaii USA. The first Megamouth was caught in some special nets at 165 metres, put out by a research vessel in Hawaii. See photo. On February 21st 1998, the 11th sighting of this rare shark was confirmed at Barangay Puerto, Philippines. The megamouth has a cylindrical, tapering body towards the tail. It has small eyes and swims in stiff, slow movements. It is thought to be less active than the Basking shark or the Whale shark and has a soft, flabby body with small gill openings . It does not have any pattern on its body. The head is bulbous, wide and long. Though its large size and huge mouth create a sinister appearance, the megamouth is timid like the whale shark. It is thought that the largest megamouth ever found was about 14 feet long. The Megamouth photographed in Barangay Puerto (Philippines) was longer by about two and a half feet. (16.5 feet - 5 metres). It is believed they occur in depths from 150 - 1000 metres. It is therefore unlikely to be seen by scuba divers who rarely dive more than 40 - 50 metres.

    Introduction
This may sound like an over dramatisation but in the 50s and 60s it was considered dangerous to go diving because of Sharks, then in the 70s night diving was considered a maniacs' sport again because of the "shark menace".
These pages are also dedicated to education. My main aim has changed since I started these pages. Originally the aim was Information and Conservation. Now the purpose of these pages are :
  • Information
  • Education
  • Conservation
Lots of parents, pupils and teachers have emailed me (thanx I like hearing about this) to tell me about the projects they are doing. I have had a lot of positive feedback telling me that the pages are easy to understand. I aim to expand and move these pages with a view to them being an educational resource. I would also really love it if anyone writing projects on sharks or conservation for school would send me their work later to put on the web as a further resource and example.
These pages will cover items such as shark habitats, physiology, the danger to sharks from "man attack" and something about shark attack on man, because this does happen though not to the extent the media would have us believe.

    Those Predatory Sharks...
Predatory animals inspire a sense of awe, respect and fear among humans. On land, big cats, wolves, and bears are some of the quintessential predators. Dip beneath the waves, however, and sharks take the stage, alongside orcas, sperm whales, and large squids and fishes. Although there are many marine predators, it is the sharks that have been most stereotyped as the "killers from the deep". There's no denying the fact that sharks are carnivorous and predatory. Generally, however, sharks have a more diverse diet than usually credited by the general public. The giant filter-feeding basking shark (
