THE SUEZ MARU supplied to COFEPOW by Dennis Courant Early 1942 In early 1942 Japanese Emperor Hirohito decrees the establishment of the Prisoners of War Bureau. One of its tasks is to record the death of Allied Prisoners of War and to adopt a policy to ensure that by the end of hostilities all Allied Prisoners of War and internees will be eliminated. Japanese Imperial Headquarters issues orders to all Pacific Commands that under no circumstances will Prisoners of War be allowed to fall into enemy hands. Mid January 1943 April 1943 A large group of about 4000 British and Dutch POWs are shipped from Surabaya to the Island of Ambon (Camps: Liang, Ambon City, Rumah Tiga, Wyame and Laha), the Island of Ceram (Camp Amahei) and the Island of Haruku (Palao Camp) to be used as slave labour in the construction and expansion of airfields. Some 2000 more are shipped to the Island of Flores (Camps: Wulff, Reyers, Blom and Talibura). Smaller groups are shipped to the Islands of Buton (Camp Raha) and Timor (Camp Kupang). The POWs came from different camps in Java and were divided into 3 groups, all with letter designations indicating their camp of origin. The larger groups were assigned capital letters A, B and C whilst the smaller sub-groups were indicated by lower case letters a, b and c.

Introduction To Transportation This page will contain information on the seven modes of transportation. Aviation: Three devices important to aviation were invented in Europe in the MiddleAges and were highly developed by the 15th century: the windmill , an early propeller; the kite, an early airplane wing; and the model helicopter.
Automotive : Flint, Michigan, was the home of famous and widely respected carriage making companies in the 1800's. Carriages were drawn by horses and provided people's main form of transportation around town before cars were invented
General : GM has such a rich and multifaceted history that consolidating all of our milestones into one timeline would fill volumes. Instead, we invite you to explore abridged versions of our accomplishments by category: safety innovations , industry firsts, corporate milestones, and vehicle showcase.
Founded in 1908, General Motors has grown into the world's largest industrial corporation and full-line vehicle manufacturer. In 1996, the company employed over 647,000 people and partnered with over 30,000 supplier companies worldwide. As the largest U.S. exporter of cars and trucks, and having manufacturing, assembly, or component operations in 50 countries, General Motors has a global presence in over 190 countries. Along with designing, manufacturing, and marketing of vehicles, General Motors has substantial interests in telecommunications and space, aerospace and defense , consumer and automotive electronics, financial and insurance services, locomotives, automotive systems, and heavy-duty automatic transmissions. Solely on the strength of its more than 160 subsidiaries, joint ventures, and affiliates, General Motors, without vehicle sales, would still rank in the top 30 in the Fortune 500.

The Eleventh Meeting of the Committee on Transport and Communications (COTAC) was held in Genting Highlands, Malaysia, on 1-3 September 1982 and the Twelfth Meeting in Johore Baharu, Malaysia, on 12-14 April 1983. In addition, a special meeting of COTAC was held in Singapore on 8-9 November 1982, immediately preceding the Fourteenth AEM Meeting, to take up urgent matters in the field of civil aviation.
1982-1983 saw the emergence of various international issues, especially in civil aviation, which further underlined the need for joint ASEAN approaches to such issues. ASEAN's resolve in these areas has enhanced both its internal cohesion and its international standing.
Integrated Work Programmes (IWP) were formulated by each relevant COTAC Sub-Committee in the areas of Land Transportation, Post and Telecommunications and Civil Aviation and Related Services by the end of 1982. These follow the pattern of the Integrated Work Programme on Shipping, (IWPS) with priority areas identified and implemented over a specific time frame. The various Work Programmes were consolidated into an ASEAN Integrated Work Programme in Transportation and Communication (IWPTC) covering the period 1982-1986. As of May 1983, only twelve of COTAC's previous list of projects had not been incorporated into any specific IWP. These are projects which involve more than one mode of transport.

Hull classification symbol
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The United States Navy uses hull classification symbols to identify the types of its ships. See also pennant number , a somewhat analogous system used by the Royal Navy and some European navies. The combination of symbol and hull number identify a modern Navy ship uniquely. A heavily modified or repurposed ship may receive a new symbol, and either retain the hull number or receive a new one. Also, the system of symbols has changed a number of times since it was introduced in , so ships' symbols sometimes change without anything being done to the physical ship. Many of these symbols are not presently in use.

The large volume of coastal commercial fishing and maritime traffic limits in-service sea training, especially in the relatively shallow waters required for mine laying, mine sweeping, and submarine rescue practice. Training days are scheduled around slack fishing seasons in winter and summerproviding about ten days during the year. The MSDF maintains two oceangoing training ships and conducted annual long-distance on-the-job training for graduates of the one-year officer candidate school. When two North Korean spy boats were later discovered in Japanese territorial waters, Japanese Naval Forces fired their guns in anger for the first time in 54 years. The MSDF is commanded by the chief of the maritime staff and includes the maritime staff office, the self-defense fleet, five regional district commands, the air-training squadron, and various support units, such as hospitals and schools. The maritime staff office, located in Tokyo, serves the chief of staff in command and supervision of the force. The self-defense fleet, headquartered at Yokosuka, is charged with defense of all waters around the Japanese Archipelago. It commands four escort flotillas (two based in Yokosuka and one each in Sasebo and Maizuru), the fleet air force headquartered at Atsugi, two submarine flotillas based at Kure and Yokosuka, two mine-sweeping flotillas based at Kure and Yokosuka, and the fleet training command at Yokosuka.

KRYLOV CENTRAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE: NEW HORIZONS
Valentin Pashin The State Research Center of the Russian Federation, the Krylov Central Research Institute, is Russia’s leading shipbuilding research institution. Its vast potential in the development of standard and engineering documentation, naval design and tests, has attracted customers from many countries. This publication coincides with a remarkable event in the Krylov Institute’s life: the conclusion of 200th foreign contract. The article deals with new trends at the Institute which have emerged following its reorganization. 1. Kosmonavt Yuri Gagarin (Project 1909), flagship of Russia's space telemetry tracking and control system ussia’s leading shipbuilding research center, the Krylov Central Research Institute, has been expanding its activities. In accordance with a Russian Government decision, it has incorporated two well-known shipbuilding organizations: the Baltsudoproekt Central Design Bureau and Lot Central Research Institute. Each of them has made a significant contribution to the Russian Navy’s buildup and modernization.
For example, Bultsudoproekt is currently one of the oldest and most distinguished shipbuilding design bureaus in Russia with vast experience in the development of special-purpose and support ships for the Navy, as well as civil research, transport and support vessels.
