Brief History of the Olympic Games
Ancient Olympic Games Chronology of athletic events added to the Olympic Games Myths and the Olympic Games Pelops myth ... Athens for Olympic Games of 2004
Ancient Olympic Games The Olympic Games begun at Olympia in Greece in 776 BC. The Greek calendar was based on the Olympiad, the four-year period between games. The games were staged in the wooded valley of Olympia in Elis. Here the Greeks erected statues and built temples in a grove dedicated to Zeus, supreme among the gods. The greatest shrine was an ivory and gold statue of Zeus. Created by the sculptor Phidias, it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Scholars have speculated that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but rather the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states of Elis and Pisa. The Eleans traced the founding of the Olympic games to their King Iphitos, who was told by the Delphi Oracle to plant the olive tree from which the victors' wreaths were made. According to Hippias of Elis, who compiled a list of Olympic victors c.400 BC, at first the only Olympic event was a 200-yard dash, called a stadium. This was the only event until 724 BC, when a two-stadia race was added. Two years later the 24-stadia event began, and in 708 the pentathlon was added and wrestling became part of the games. This pentathlon, a five-event match consisted of running, wrestling, leaping, throwing the discus, and hurling the javelin. In time boxing, a chariot race, and other events were included.

A Little History
The Shooting Federation of Canada was formed in 1932, under the name of the Canadian Small Bore Rifle Association. In 1949, Supplementary Letters Patent were issued for a change of name to the Canadian Civilian Association of Marksmen. Our present name, the Shooting Federation of Canada was authorized in 1964 when skeet and trap associations affiliated to form one umbrella organization. In 1962, the SFC was officially recognized by the Fitness and Amateur Sport Branch of Health and Welfare Canada as the National Sport Governing Body responsible for organized recreational and competitive target shooting in Canada. The National Sport and Recreational Centre, NSRC was set up in Ottawa in 1971 and the Federation became one of the first resident organizations to locate its office in the Centre. The SFC is a non-profit organization dedicated to the development and promotion of all forms of shooting activity in Canada. It coordinates a wide range of programs and services for recreational shooters, and arranges participation by Canadian teams in national and international competitions, including Commonwealth, Pan American and Olympic Games. Directing the Federation's affairs is a volunteer Board of Directors which includes representatives from each provincial/territorial association and any other affiliated shooting organizations. Programs are developed and implemented by Section Committees of each of the various disciplines; rifle, pistol, black powder, skeet, trap, running target, metallic silhouette, PPC/action shooting and fullbore. Special standing committees coordinate participation in international competition, national team training, coaching and officiating, firearms legislation and a variety of other activities. Day-to-day operations, including the servicing of members needs, classification of competitors and the sale of official targets and merchandise are conducted by the SFC national office.

Support/join USBA The final biathlon competition of the Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games found the US Men's 4 X 7.5K Relay team in 15th place out of 19 teams at the Soldier Hollow finish line today. On a day with wet, heavy snow falling, all of the athletes struggled on the course, but the US men also lost their shooting touch. They needed 18 extra shots to complete the race and incurred two penalties. Jeremy Teela (Anchorage, AK) led off in a relay competition for the first time in his career. Admitting that he was "nervous," Teela needed all three extra rounds to clean prone. He then skied himself back into the race, but used the three extra rounds standing and incurred one penalty. He said that the skiing was "OK, because we have all of the right skis and were prepared for the new snow. But I really hated to miss that standing shot." Jay Hakkinen, the other Alaskan on the men's team, is usually an accurate prone shooter, but not today. Hakkinen used three extra rounds in prone, and only one in standing. Despite using four extra rounds, he was over 30 seconds ahead of his teammates for his leg. Hakkinen characterized the performance of the relay team after the competition. He stated, "We really haven't focused on the relay for over two years, so this competition was simply a culmination of the Games for us. We've had a great Olympic Games with some of our best results ever. Our team is looking forward to doing well in upcoming World Cups. For me, I'm just glad to be competitive again. I had the third best time in the Pursuit and I consider that my paper medal! But seriously, the crowds really inspired our performances and we hope that they will continue to follow our sport as we prepare for Torino."

My involvement in the sport of competitive shooting spans a period of 34 years. My coaching career has evolved from the local club level through the regional, provincial, national and international levels. I have coached the pistol team since 1986. During that time the team and myself have represented Canada at numerous World Cup competitions, Continental Championships, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, PanAm Games and the Olympic Games. To date, I consider the most memorable highlight of my coaching career to be the gold medal record setting performance of the team at the PanAm Games in Havana, Cuba in 1991 .

History
Unfortunately, the modern pentathlon’s Olympic history has all too often failed to live up to the lofty ideals of its founder. In Mexico in 1968 Swedish competitor Hans Gunnar Liljeavall secured his place in Olympic history by being disqualified for consuming alcohol during the competition. Further controversy followed at the following Games in Munich when the sport’s governing body banned 14 athletes who were found to have taken tranquillisers, only to see the ban overturned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) because it did not consider the tranquillisers as a banned substance. Australia has not escaped the unwelcome hand of controversy when it comes to the modern pentathlon.

History
The biathlon, which combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting, originated in Norway as a training exercise for soldiers. The first known competition took place in 1767 between companies of guards who patrolled the border with Sweden. Late in the 19th century, local rifle and ski clubs in Norway and other Scandinavian countries practiced the sport to keep their members prepared for combat. An early form of the biathlon, called " military ski patrol," was a demonstration sport at the first Winter Olympics in 1924, and it was a medal sport in 1928, 1936, and 1948. Because few countries participated, and the few that did participate had trouble agreeing on the rules, the sport was dropped from the Olympics. However, the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon was founded in 1948 to standardize rules for both the biathlon and the modern pentathlon. The first world championship was held in 1957 and biathlon was added to the Winter Olympic program in 1960, but the U. S. didn't conduct a national championship until 1965. Following the lead of the international organization, the national governing body was originally the U. S. Modern Pentathlon and Biathlon Association. The U. S. Biathlon Association was spun off in 1980.

It is a major center of electronic research and development, training and production in Russia. Scatt was established in 1991 at the advent of the Russian Federation. It has had the support and co-operation of the National Shooting Team of the Russian Federation, who all practice using Scatt Systems, and with the help of whom we have been able to amass a database of over 400,000 shots. With this data we have been able to create a system with an accuracy achievement that is second to none, that assists shooters from all over the world to reach their highest goals.
