But where the Olympics' eclecticism was once a strength, today's version of diversity is its greatest flaw. While people often complain about the opening up of the Olympiad to professionals or the lavishing of vast inequities of attention, prestige, and money on different sports, the real problem is the inclusion of two (occasionally overlapping) categories: 1) Events, often high-profile, for which the Olympics is not that sport's premier competition. These are nothing more than gussied-up exhibitions. 2) Events that are called sports but really aren't. Call these the bogus or silly sports. Richard Faulds took gold in Sydney Gold and silver medals for Richard Faulds and Ian Peel in Sydney meant that shooting sports earned £1.3m of Lottery money to support British prospects for the next Olympic Games in Athens 2004. But it's not a simple case of handing out money to our top rifle, pistol and clay target shooters and letting them get on with it. Lottery funding is hard-won and there are, rightly, strings attached. One of the conditions for this funding - for any sport, not just shooting - is that a proper programme has to be agreed to the Government's satisfaction to measure how the money is used to help achieve further Olympic success. UK Sport is the body responsible for distributing funds to shooting sports and ensuring that the money is used wisely. It liaises with the Great Britain Target Shooting Federation (GBTSF) - the body responsible for international shooting sports in the UK - which in turn appointed a Performance Director in January 2002 to meet UK Sport's requirements, develop the World Class Performance Programme (WCPP) and ensure that it stays on track. John Leighton-Dyson took up the challenge and has developed and implemented a thorough programme to draw out the best possible performances from the 15 talented shooters supported through the new scheme in the run-up to Athens 2004.

The expanded competition was announced today by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) which has committed $3 million to stage the five day event from the 8 th th of January 2003. "Our first Olympic Festival in 2001 was a resounding success and more sports have been added this time round" said AOC Secretary General Bob Elphinston. "Such is the popularity of the AYOF 25 of the 28 summer Sports Federations wanted to participate and ultimately the AOC would like to include them all" he said. It's late afternoon at the United States Olympic Training Center here, and all is quiet, finally, inside the $2.7 million shooting range. It's eerie for a place so alive with noise so much of the time to be silent. Beki Snyder is one of America's prime hopes to medal in shooting - 10-meter air pistol and 25-meter sport pistol - at the coming Olympics in Sydney, Australia, beginning Sept. 15. She's finished with practice, for now. She stares down at the targets and thinks back, when asked, on how it was when she first started competing about a decade ago.
