These are some kids that are at school working in a classroom Sierra Leone has a lot of different customs that they share with different countries. In an English law, an ancient rule of law for a particular locality, as opposed to the common law of the country. It has its origin in the Anglo-Saxon period, when local customs formed most laws affecting family rights, ownership and inheritance, contracts, and personal violence. The Norman conquerors granted the validity of customary law, adapting it to their feudal system. Since that time, a local custom outside of common law has been considered valid if it: (1) has been practiced peaceably and continuously from time immemorialÑin practice, as long as living testimony can recall; (2) is reasonable, certain, and obligatory; and (3) is confined to a specific locality. With the cultural uniformity of the modern age, custom as a force of law retains its validity, but in practice it has lost ground to common law. These are the main languages in Sierra Leone Krio, Mende, Temne, English, and the official language is English. Most of the people speak the English language though. A majority of the people in Sierra Leone also speak Krio. Not very many of the people speak these languages any more. These are the main religions Islam, Christianity. Aced with a collapse in its finances and criticism by donor countries, the government has launched a massive campaign against corruption in public finances. This is the president of Sierra Leone President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah. He has achieved this has launched a war against corruption.

    The Black Loyalists
Founding of Freetown, Sierra Leone When the American Revolution began, there were about 500,000 slaves in the American colonies, and British officials sought to win their allegiance through suggestions that a Loyalist victory would mean an end to slavery. Thousands of slaves joined the British cause in the remaining years of the revolution and contributed to the Loyalist war effort as soldiers, guides, foragers, cooks, laundresses, teamsters, and construction workers. In fact, very few Loyalist endeavours lacked the presence of at least some Blacks. British gratitude was not always apparent, and many Black Loyalists were treated as slaves or bartered with rebels for the return of white prisoners. Fortunately, Commander-in-Chief Sir Guy Carleton upheld British honour by insisting that the runaways were not, in fact, American property at the time of the Provincial Peace Agreement (1782) and that they must be allowed to evacuate with other Loyalists. The evacuees were carried to Bermuda, the West Indies, London, and other British territories, but the largest group, all told about 3,500, located in Nova Scotia in 1782-83. They confidently expected a just reward for their loyalty to the Crown.

The rebels still have the upper hand in Sierra Leone
By Newsnight correspondent Robin Deneslow Foday Sankoh was in an angry mood. The Chairman - as he likes to be called - wanted to visit Makeni, one of the towns in that part of Sierra Leone still controlled by the rebel fighters of his Revolutionary United Front. But he could not get a helicopter. The UN would not provide one, and I certainly could not. He declined an offer of a lift in my car. There are far too many potentially-hostile roadblocks on the route out from Freetown, the Sierra Leone capital. "Look at the way I'm treated," he complained.
I produced the letter from Sankoh. Ah, that was different.
Mr Sankoh ought to be a very happy man. After all, this veteran rebel leader was in jail, held on death row, until the rebel forces supporting him stormed into Freetown last year, killing or hacking the limbs from civilians in a terror campaign that forced the government to make a deal. Under the Lome agreement, signed between Mr Sankoh's RUF and the government last year, he has been granted a blanket amnesty for all the atrocities, a place in the new government of national unity, and even help to transform the RUF into a political party to fight elections next year.

    http://www.mapzones.com/world/africa/sierra_leone/cultureindex.php
Country Info Sierra Leone Introduction Sierra Leone General Data Sierra Leone Maps Sierra Leone Culture ... Sierra Leone Time and Date Sierra Leone Culture Back to Top The most outstanding feature of the country's cultural life is its dancing. The Sierra Leone Dance Troupe is internationally known. The different communities of the nation have their own styles of costume and dance. In addition, certain closed societies, such as the Wunde, the Sande (Bundu), and the Gola, have characteristic ceremonial dances. A wide range of agility, gracefulness, and rhythm is displayed; in addition, there are elements of symbolism in most of the dances. Drums, wooden xylophones (called balaphones), and various stringed instruments provide the musical background. The carving of various wooden masks in human and animal figures for the dances is especially advanced in the southern region. The Sande mask worn on the head of the chief dancer during the ceremony attending the reappearance of the female initiates from their period of seclusion is perhaps the most well-known carved figure in Sierra Leonean art. It is a symmetrically stylized black head of an African woman with an elaborate plaited pyramidal coiffure adorned with various figures and with a facial expression of grave dignity and beauty. Ivory figures are characteristic of the Sherbro, Bullom, and Temne peoples of the coastal and northern regions. Fine examples of these figures, which were bought or commissioned by Portuguese traders during the 16th century, are still extant. There are also steatite human figures, sometimes distorted, called nomoli, or, in wooden form, pomtan (singular, pombo), which certainly date earlier than the 16th century and were used probably for ancestor worship or fertility rites. At present, they are used for ceremonies to ensure abundance of crops.

    SIERRA LEONE : PRESENTATION GENERALE
