S ign Language interpreters are gaining popularity in theatres from Broadway to Boise. With the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act, along with increased sensitivity to Sign Language and the Deaf community, theatre producers and venues throughout the country find themselves exploring the opportunity to reach out to a new audience via interpreted performances. Unfortunately, interpreters who are experienced in performance interpreting are few and far between. In addition, most production staff have a limited understanding of the variety of issues associated with the provision of quality interpreted performance. It is hoped that this Web site will serve as a resource for both novice and experienced interpreters, as well as for theatre staff wanting to learn about sign language interpreted performance. For the Interpreter and For the Theatre are good places to start.
Getting ready for a performance of your own? Fill out our form , and we'll make sure to include it in our list of interpreted performances. Better yet, send us a photo, and we'll be happy to feature you on the site.

American Sign Language as a Foreign Language

Interest in American Sign Language (ASL) as a foreign language has become, in the words of Gary Olsen, former Executive Director of the National Association of the Deaf, "an American ground swell." Many colleges and universities are beginning to recognize the study of ASL and Deaf culture as legitimate academic pursuits and are starting to accept ASL in fulfillment of their foreign language entrance and exit requirements. In several states, ASL is mandated by law as acceptable in fulfillment of high school foreign language graduation requirements.
More and more colleges and universities are accepting ASL in fulfillment of foreign language requirements. The University of California system (all campuses) will soon accept ASL in fulfillment of foreign language entrance and graduation requirements. Harvard and Yale are among some of the schools which are investigating similar action. Recently, we have witnessed tremendous activity by state legislatures to support the teaching and acceptance of ASL as a foreign language. Many states now recognize ASL as a foreign language for the purpose of meeting high school graduation requirements.
In 1988, the parliament of the European Community, noting that there are 500,000 profoundly deaf people in member states whose first language is their national signed language and not the dominant spoken language of their country, recognized as legitimate languages the indigenous signed languages of the twelve member states. Recognition and acceptance of signed languages is clearly an idea whose time has come on an international scale.

http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~waleed/gsl-rec/
Machine Gesture and Sign Language Recognition
Machine gesture and sign language recognition is, as the name suggests, about recognition of gestures and/or sign language using computers. A number of hardware techniques are used for gathering information about body positioning; typically either image-based (using cameras, moving lights etc) or device-based (using instrumented gloves, styli, position trackers etc.), although hybrids are beginning to come about. However, getting the data is only the first step. The second step, that of recognising the sign or gesture once it has been captured is much more challenging, especially in a continuous stream. In fact currently, this is the focus of the research. This page tries to include links to online information on this subject on the 'Net, and to stay up-to-date as far as conferences and so on are concerned. If you have any suggestions, corrections or additions, please don't hesitate to mail me.
