Home Sikhs Message of Sikhism Message of Sikhism "Truth is higher than everything,
But higher still is truthful living"

(Guru Nanak, the 1st Sikh prophet) Unlike many other Eastern philosophies which preach asceticism and escapism, the Sikh religion exists as a faith of life-affirmation. A Sikh regards the world not as a place of suffering, but as a meaningful creation of God wherein noble, truthful, and selfless actions can bring a person closer to realizing Him. Sikhism preaches universal equality, and therefore, regards all religions and people as equal before the eyes of God. A Sikh is enjoined to rise above ego, live a truthful family life, share earnings with the less fortunate, and, as a human being, work toward progress on the individual and social level. THE BASIC BELIEFS OF SIKHS The Mool Mantar (literally, the root verse; the first hymn composed by Guru Nanak) sums up the basic belief of the Sikhs. Guru Granth Sahib begins with the Mool Mantar . Every Sikh is expected to recite it daily. The English translation is given below: Ik Onkaar There is only one God Sat Naam His Name is Truth Karta Purkh He is the Creator Nir Bhau He is without fear Nir Vair He is without hate Akaal Moorat He is beyond time (Immortal) Ajooni He is beyond birth and death Saibhang He is self-existent
Gur Parsaad He is realised by the Guru's grace.

Letters Call To The Stand Thu Jul 26 I have read the responses to my article (' Homosexuality and Sikhism ', July 23) with much amusement. I never intended the article to be based on gurbani. The single religious quote I included concerned equality, not homosexuality. This article was written from my heart, to draw attention to the numerous Sikhs who are affected by this issue in one way or another. Sikhism is regarded as a religion extolling the virtues of equality in mankind, and yet it has failed to live upto its expectations in many respects recently. For example, the Chumaars have been forced by the continuation of caste distinctions and social exclusion from village gurdwaras to create a distinct Ravidasi community, the appointment of Bibi Jagir Kaur was initially questioned on the simple basis that she was a woman, and the current emphasis on Sikhism has been that of a Punjabi
religion, not a global one.

Almost every major world religion finds significant representation in Asia. Not only is Asia the birthplace of Buddhism, Hinduism, Daoism, Shinto, Sikhism, Confucianism and Jainism, the continent is also home to the largest Muslim population in the world, as well as significant numbers of Christians and Jews. Additionally, Asian immigrants have brought their religious traditions with them wherever they have settled, making many of these religions truly global in scope and practice. Despite their rich histories, Asian religions are dynamic, often responding to the changing needs of their followers, in Asia and abroad. AsiaSource has put together a number of helpful resources that explore the diversity and breadth of Asian religions both in Asia and throughout the world.

Sikhism
No consensus exists on the origins of this religion. Historians and specialists in Eastern religions generally believe that Sikhism is a syncretistic religion, related to the Bhakti movement within Hinduism and the Sufi branch of Islam, to which many independent beliefs and practices were added. Many Sikhs disagree; they believe that their religion is a direct revealed from God - a religion that was not derived from either Hinduism or Islam. Its founder was Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji , (1469-1538) who was born in the Punjab area of what is now Pakistan. At Sultanpur, he received a vision to preach the way to enlightenment and God. He is responsible for the saying "There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim" which has since become one of the pillars of Sikhism. Guru Nanak and Panth (his followers) later built the first Sikh temple at Katarpur. A succession of nine Gurus (regarded as reincarnations of Guru Nanak) led the movement during the period from Guru Nanak's death until 1708. At that time, the functions of the Guru passed to the Panth and to the holy text, considered the 11th Guru. Mogul emperors ruled a large area of South Asia from the 16th century until the end of the 18th century. They attempted to convert the Sikhs to Islam, but were unsuccessful. It has been said of one of the Sikh Gurus (considered by many Sikhs to have been the last guru) that

A Syncretistic Religion
The faith heralded new awareness by evolving new ethos and a reordered social system with revolutionary value patterns
In historical times, the north-west India was often a region of turmoil, defending itself from ambitious invaders. Amidst this turmoil, and out of the mosaic of Indian traditions, culture and religions, runs an inviolate thread of unity. Nowhere is this better illustrated than in the tenets and practice of Sikhism.
Historians and specialists in Eastern religions generally believe that Sikhism is a syncretistic religion, related to the Bhakti Movement within Hinduism and the Sufi branch of Islam, to which many independent beliefs and practices were added. The greatness of the religion can be understood against this background.
It was enforced upon all Sikh people not to drink, smoke, cut their hair or violate the privacy of women, specifically Muslim women. These tenets went with the social and cultural milieu of the period. Through religion, man was being taught to observe restraint. If he did not get intoxicated, the more chances were that he will use his head. If he was forced to respect women, particularly from other communities, it further reduced tensions. In this unique and ingenious way, Sikhism helped the people along the northern state of Punjab to restrain from escalating tensions. But, at the same time, in a message that fear was not the answer, the religion taught people to grow beard, carry knives (kirpan) and build up a courageous profile for self-defense.

    Page 6.21 - 3 Eastern Religions 1 C-1311
There is no conveniently proper way to categorize or organize the various eastern religions, but they can be grouped almost artificially into those traditional religions which predominate in the Indian subcontinent at the present time and those which predominate at the present time in the far east, i.e., in China and Japan. Thus the first group includes Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism, while the second group includes Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Shinto, and Zen. And while Islam is a major religion in the eastern hemisphere, it belongs perhaps more logically with the western religions due to its more intimate relationship to Christianity. Hinduism is by no means the only significant religion in India, but it enjoys a majority and is related significantly to both Jainism and Sikhism. Thus Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism are three of the traditional religions of India. But each of these (and more) is a significant religion in its own right, and each contributes to the whole (collective world religion). Within each of these religions there are a number of sects, indeed within Hinduism there are many. Each has a peculiar emphasis and each offers opportunities for improving one's relationship to God (the higher Self). Moreover, within Hinduism there are major religious movements that might be considered religions, but there is a sufficient commonality, much like the various Protestant denominations or religions of Christianity, although distinctions between and within religions are sometimes almost arbitrary.
