Overview Tribes Milestones Landscapes and Landmarks Museums and Art Galleries ... Tribal Casinos A Guide to the Great Sioux Nation From rolling plains to majestic mountains, a diverse landscape decorates South Dakota. These magical lands also hold a diverse population. More than 62,000 American Indians live in South Dakota. Most of them are Dakota, Lakota or Nakota people, also known collectively as Sioux.
This nation traces its roots to the "Oceti Sakowin" or "Seven Council Fires." Each of the allied bands within this nation spoke one of three different dialects. The Santee spoke Dakota; the Yankton, Nakota; and the Teton, Lakota.
Tradition holds the forces of nature as holy and emphasizes the importance of balance among all things in the universe. This balance remains an instrumental piece of life, as to the cardinal virtues of "woksape" (wisdom), "woohitika" (bravery), "wowacintanka" (fortitude) and "wacantognaka" (generosity).
Experience a culture as vast, vibrant and enduring as the land itself.

Kavallerie, insgesamt 200 Mann.

Creation stories teach that Native Americans have been where they are since the world was created. It is also thought that First Americans migrated from Siberia over the Bering Strait about 14,000 years ago, or perhaps even earlier. The land bridge was dry ground for several thousand years before the sea level rose again and stopped migration. The hunters would have followed the migrating herds of large mammals as they moved south. As the glaciers melted, the First Americans spread to the North American coasts and across the entire continent. Native Americans adapted to the climates and terrains in which they lived and used whatever natural resources were available. The arrival of the Europeans in the 1500's began a change in the lives of the Indian people that continued through the next centuries. Sometimes the changes were good. The horses brought by the Spanish made bison hunting much easier and safer. But Vikings, Spanish, English and French explorers, colonists and missionaries spread diseases, made slaves of the people, forced relocations, claimed ownership of natural resources and land, and tried to stamp out the native cultures. Some of the Indian people survived, but not without making drastic changes in their life styles.

This page has been developed to serve the needs of students and the general public within the Ramapo Catskill Library System; however, everyone is welcome. It is my goal to present a vast array of sites that cover all aspects of Native American life, both past and present, with particular attention given to official tribal pages and sites that have received awards for quality and design.
Please be aware that the sites and titles provided here represent only a small amount of the available information on Native Americans. Besides the Internet, there is a vast array of books, articles, and audio visual materials available concerning Native Americans. Please visit the library for assistance throughout your research process. Finally, if you have any questions or comments concerning this page, please send your email to me, Susan Jacobs , at the West Nyack Free Library. Thank you for visiting.

The Pomo have been especially noted for their basketry arts, and many of their works are now valued art objects in museums and private collections. Of these arts, the Pomo developed feather-covering, lattice-twining, checker-work, single-rod coiling, and several other specializations.
