Alpine Skiing
People began strapping skis to their feet as far back as 5,000 years ago. Englishman Sir Arnold Lunn and Austrian Hannes Schneider invented modern alpine racing. Lunn, a son of a London travel agent, spent his years traveling through the Alps and envisioning racing through the majestic range. Lunn organized the first slalom in 1922 in Muerren, Switzerland, and joined forces with Schneider two years later to organize the race that would become the first Olympic alpine event.

Competition
Alpine skiing is among the most exciting Olympics events and was introduced to the Olympic program at the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Games with a men's and women's combined event, featuring a downhill and two slalom runs. After the cancellation of the following two Games because of war, alpine skiing returned to St. Moritz with a program of six events. The Oslo Games in 1952 welcomed giant slalom to the program and marked the departure of the combined event. The combined event did not return until 1988.

The thrill and exhilaration of the sport attracts millions of fans. Skiing has deep roots in Scandinavia and its popularity spread throughout Europe and America alike. The origins and historical background of this winter sport can be pieced together by taking a look at these countries. Skiing, as a sport, is comparatively new. Skiing as a means of travel, however, dates back to man's earliest migrations. Physical evidence dates back to about 2500 BC, and includes a pair of preserved skis from Central Sweden, and rock drawings from Northern Norway showing a party of either hunters or warriors wearing skis. Skiing has been a major catalyst of great events, throughout Nordic history. A very illustrative example is found in Sweden history. In 1521, the Danes overran Sweden and massacred all the Swedish nobles but one, Gustav Vasa, who was able to escape. The Swedes were left without a leader, so two desperate peasants set out on skis to find Gustav. He came back, drove the Danes out of Sweden, and established the kingdom that survives to this day. The Swedes learned a valuable lesson from Gustav Vasa’s rescue: the importance of skiing. During the many wars of the 16th and 17th centuries, they equipped all their troops with either skis or snowshoes.

There are four events each for men and women in short track and five events each in long track. Long track pairs two skaters at a time racing against the clock. Short track is more like a roller derby race. U.S. FORECAST: Here's a tip. If you want to impress your neighbors, start talking about Apolo Anton Ohno in the next day or two. Downhill Where: Snowbasin When: Feb. 10-23 World view: Herman Maier won't be here, but that doesn't mean the Austrians won't be strong. Stephan Eberharter has dominated the World Cup circuit and is a favorite in the downhill and Super G. Norwegian veteran Kjetil Andre Aamodt could be back on the medal stand as well, along with teammate Lasse Kjus, who was second in the downhill and combined in Nagano. Another who could move up in Maier's absence is Switzerland's Didier Cuche. On the women's side, Michaela Dorfmeister of Austria leads the World Cup standings but could face challenges from teammate Renate Goetschl, Germany's Hilde Gerg, Switzerland's Sonja Nef, and Italy's Isolde Kostner. US outlook: Bode Miller has taken the spotlight this World Cup season, winning four events for the best performance by a US skier since Phil Mahre in 1983. Miller has to be among the favorites in the slalom and giant slalom. In his shadow is Daron Rahlves, who stunned the Austrians with his victory in the Super G at last year's world championships. It would be a lovely story for Picabo Street to end her Olympic career with a downhill medal but don't count on it, her best finish this season is a fifth in Calgary. More likely to take the stand is Kristina Koznick in the slalom.
