Skin Cancer
Saving Your Skin From Sun Damage AAFP catalog Why is the sun so bad for my skin? The sun's rays, which are called ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B rays (UVA and UVB rays) damage your skin. This leads to early wrinkles, skin cancer and other skin problems. Being in the sun often over time, even if you don't burn, can lead to skin cancer. A tan is the body's desperate attempt to protect itself from the sun's harmful rays. Are tanning booths safer? No. Tanning booths use ultraviolet rays. Makers of the booths may claim that they use "harmless" UVA rays. But both UVA and UVB rays cause skin damage. While UVA rays take longer than UVB rays to damage the skin, they go deeper into the skin than UVB rays. Where is skin cancer most likely to occur? Most skin cancers occur on parts of the body that are repeatedly exposed to the sun. These areas include the head, neck, face, tips of the ears, hands, forearms, shoulders, back, chests of men, and the back and lower legs of women. What are the risk factors for skin cancer?

Eyelid Skin Cancer
Skin cancer often involves the skin of the eyelid or adjacent face. Eyelid skin cancers occur most often on the lower eyelid, but may be found anywhere on the eyelid margins, corners of the eye, eyebrow skin, or adjacent areas of the face. Usually, they appear as painless elevations or nodules. Occasionally, the eyelashes are distorted or missing. There may be ulcerations of the involved area, along with bleeding, crusting, and/or distortion of the normal skin structure. Such findings need to be evaluated and may require a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis of skin cancer. Causes of Skin Cancer Excessive exposure to sunlight is the single most important factor associated with skin cancers on the face, eyelids, and arms. Fair-skinned people develop skin cancers far more frequently than dark-skinned people. Skin cancers may also be hereditary. Types of Skin Cancer The most common types of skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Both types enlarge locally and usually do not spread (metastasize) to distant parts of the body. However, with time, if not completely removed, either type will invade adjacent structures. It is important to know that basal and squamous cell carcinomas are relatively slow growing. Thus, when detected early and treated in a prompt and appropriate manner, there is a better chance of removing the tumor completely and minimizing the amount of tissue affected by the carcinoma. Sebaceous gland carcinoma and malignant melanoma are more serious forms of skin cancer because they may spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body. These types of skin cancer require prompt, aggressive treatment because of the threat of early spread.

51. Skin Cancer Prevention Strategies
skin cancer prevention strategies for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cellcarcinoma that go beyond sun avoidance. skin cancer Prevention Strategies.
http://www.topicalinfo.org/Prevention.htm
Skin Cancer Prevention Strategies
This page presents skin cancer prevention strategies to avoid squamous cell carcinoma or basal cell carcinoma. Standard skin cancer prevention advice is to limit ultraviolet light exposure through sun avoidance, protective clothing, and the use of sunscreen. With over one million new cases of skin cancer diagnosed each year in the US alone, this advice is obviously insufficient. By taking strategic steps to improve the performance of the body's cancer defense mechanism, better prevention of skin cancers is possible. These prevention strategies target the traits of skin cancers identified by a simple but comprehensive model of cancer presented on the treatment page The general plan to prevent skin cancer starts by optimizing the function of pancreatin enzyme cancer defense mechanism. A lack of pancreatin enzymes can result from conflicts with digestion. The enzymes can also be destroyed by contact with acids or alcohols. Cancer cells metabolize foods inefficiently and produce acidic wastes. Several prevention strategies focus on minimizing this contact. Other strategies seek to inhibit the hormones that increase the proliferation rate of the cancers. This gives the pancreatin defense mechanism more time to do its job effectively. Of course, avoiding further cell damage is also important. Findings of studies of cancer are also presented. Most of the findings of these studies can be readily explained by the simple model. One particularly appealing aspect of the model is that it applies to any type of cancer, which enables us to apply the results of studies of other types of cancers to skin cancer.

Cancer isn't one disease, but a group of diseases, which cause cells in the body to change and grow out of control. Most types of cancer cells form a lump or mass called a tumour. Only a few cancers don't form a tumour, such as blood cancers (leukemia).

Cells from a tumour can break away and travel to other parts of the body and, from there, continue to grow. This spreading is called metastasis. When cancer spreads - for instance, if breast cancer spreads to the lungs - it is still named after the part of the body where it originated. In this case, it is still breast cancer, not lung cancer. A cancerous tumour is called a malignant tumour. Tumours, however, are not all cancerous. Tumours that are not cancerous are called benign. In most cases, benign tumours are not life threatening, and do not grow and spread the way cancer does.

Study sheds light on how the sun causes skin cancer

Findings could lead to new methods for diagnosing early melanoma L. Chin, MD
Researchers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have made a discovery that could help solve a mystery in cancer biology: how a sunburn acquired during a childhood day at the beach can develop into a deadly tumor decades later. The scientists report in the Feb. 4 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that the sun’s damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays target a series of biochemical signals inside the young skin cell, impairing the cell’s ability to control its proliferation. The paper currently is available on the journal’s Web site. Lynda Chin, MD, and her colleagues found that they could increase both the number of tumors and the speed with which they formed by exposing newborn mice with an intact Rb pathway to UV radiation. (A pathway is a chain of biochemical signals that regulates cellular activity.) Those mice in which the Rb pathway was already essentially knocked out were unaffected by the dose of UV radiation. "It looks like the Rb pathway is specifically targeted by ultraviolet radiation," said Chin, the study’s senior author. Karupiah Kannan, PhD, and Norman Sharpless, MD, formerly at the DFCI, are first authors on the study. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and, left unchecked, can spread aggressively to other parts of the body. However, if caught early, many melanoma lesions can be effectively treated surgically. The discovery that UV radiation triggers melanoma formation by dismantling a specific pathway inside the skin’s pigment-producing cells, or melanocytes, offers the possibility of an efficient means of distinguishing, at an early stage, cancerous moles from non-cancerous ones.
