Carotenoids are biological pigments that are the coloring of living organisms and the necessary molecules needed for important metabolic reactions. They are distributed everywhere in leaves, flowers, fruits, and roots of plants. Carotenoids are also found in many animals, especially in marine invertebrates. They tend to accumulate in brightly colored feathers of tropical birds. All carotenoids that are found in animals are ultimately derived from plants or algae. Carotenoids are potent antioxidant molecules that protect plants from damage caused by singlet and triplet oxygen which is the by-product of ultra violet rays and photosynthetic metabolism. They are free radical scavengers that prevent harmful uncontrolled oxidation chain reactions.

UI researchers also reported that PCB-exposed mice also ate more and grew fatter, regardless of exposure to light. "The statistical power of our experiments leads us to believe that our results likely underestimate the strength of our conclusions," said Rhian B. Cope, a professor of veterinary biosciences in the UI College of Veterinary Medicine. "Because PCB-contaminated soil and sun exposure are both extremely common, we must look at this issue in humans." In the study, funded by the American Cancer Society, researchers exposed a group of mice for 77 days to soil from a Southern Illinois landfill site contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls and polychlorinated dibenzofurans, a PCB byproduct. Some of the mice were then exposed five days a week for 28 weeks to solar ultraviolet radiation.

Melanoma occurs when tumors start to grow on clusters of the melanocytes that produce melanin or skin color. Sometimes these clusters appear as moles, which are benign. When moles turn darker or begin to grow, it is sometimes a sign of cancer and should be tested.

Thwarting Skin Cancer with Sun Sense
by Carolyn J. Strange "This looks like skin cancer," the dermatologist told the woman as he examined the spot on her leg. Later, after removing the tumor and several other precancerous growths from her face and hands, he looked her in the eyes and said, "You've had enough sun." More and more people are hearing similar messages from their doctors. Viewed as an undeclared epidemic by dermatologists, skin cancer is the most prevalent of all cancers, and it's increasingly common. About a million Americans will develop skin cancer this year. "Skin cancer is now about as common as all other cancers combined," says Martin A. Weinstock, M.D., Ph.D., director of Brown University's Dermatoepidemiology Unit and Chief of Dermatology at the Providence (R.I.) Veterans Affairs Medical Center. And there's no evidence that the epidemic has peaked. But there is a bright side. Skin cancer is quite curable when treated early. More than 90 percent of skin cancers are completely cured. Even better, it's largely preventable, simply by avoiding sun and sunlamp exposure. As more consumers become sun smart, they're finding new ways to protect themselves. For example, FDA has cleared for marketing one manufacturer's clothing for sun protection. Eating a healthier diet can't hurtless fat, more fruits, vegetables and grainsand preliminary studies indicate it may help. And the National Weather Service provides a measure of ultraviolet (UV) exposure with its UV Index, which is part of the daily weather forecast for many cities.

Surgical Oncology Radiation Therapy ... Treatment Options About a million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer every year. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. According to current estimates, forty to fifty percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have skin cancer at least once. Although anyone can get skin cancer, the risk is if you have fair skin that freckles easily often with red or blond hair and blue or light-colored eyes. The two most common kinds of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. (Carcinoma is cancer that begins in the cells that cover or line an organ.) Basal cell carcinoma accounts for more than ninety percent of all skin cancers in the United States. It is a slow-growing cancer that seldom spreads to other parts of the body. Squamous cell carcinoma also rarely spreads, but it does so more often than basal cell carcinoma. However, it is important that skin cancers be found and treated early because they can invade and destroy nearby tissue. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are sometimes called non-melanoma skin cancer. Another type of cancer that occurs in the skin is

Study: Skin cancer may be warning sign for other cancers
People like Eloise Colton, who's had skin cancer, may be more prone to develop other forms of cancer.
September 12, 1998
Web posted at: 11:41 a.m. EDT (1541 GMT) From CNN Medical Correspondent Dan Rutz (CNN) People who have had even the most minor forms of skin cancer are at greater risk of dying from more serious cancers years later, according to new research. Ronald Reagan had a minor skin cancer removed while he was president and helped spread the word on prevention. "I've told everyone to think of my nose as a billboard warning people to stay out of the sun," he said at the time. Now researchers say the most common and curable skin cancers may be the billboard for more dangerous cancers to come years later. The discovery, outlined in a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, comes from a survey of more than a million people taken during President Reagan's first term.
