Short Tailed Opossums Short tailed opossums are growing in popularity as an exotic pet. They are small, generally friendly creatures which have good pet potential. They are certainly cute enough! Short tailed opossums ( Monodelphis domestica ) are from South America, and are 4-6 inches long (body only; their tail is almost as long as the body) with thick grey-brown fur. The tail is prehensile, meaning it can wrap around and hold onto things, and hairless. They are marsupials, although they do not have a pouch like most marsupials. However, their young are born quite premature and helpless, latch on to a nipple on their mother's abdomen, and stay there until they are further developed, like other marsupials. In the wild they will eat insects, spiders, and rodents. For this reason they are actually welcome house guests in their native countries. They are easily handled if tame from a young age, but should be kept as solitary pets because of their tendency to fight (ferociously) with other opossums. They are nocturnal so will be most active at night, although once awake will be social during the day.

Their history as domestic pets is not known exactly, but it's thought that they have been kept as pets as early as 75 to 100 years ago.

Box Turtle Hibernation Any box turtle that has recently been ill should not Hibernating Indoors Box turtles can be placed in a protected box (wooden or cardboard) partially filled with clean dirt (potting soil is recommended). The soil should be kept slightly damp. A layer of dead leaves or crumpled newspaper should cover the dirt A shallow dish of water should also be provided. The box can be placed in a cool area (such as a garage) and should be maintained rodent-free. The hibernating turtle should be checked periodically. During warm spells, the turtle may temporarily come out of hibernation; food should be offered at these times. Hibernating Outdoors: The hibernation period begins with inappetence in October or November in southern California and ends in March or April, depending on environmental conditions in the spring. Box turtles may be allowed to hibernate in the corner of a dog house or other similar shelter if they are allowed to burrow under some loose cover. Dead leaves or crumpled newspapers can be provided for this purpose. An alternative arrangement involves providing a protected area with loose dirt and a covering layer of dead leaves or dried lawn clippings that cannot be flooded by winter rains. Box turtles may emerge during warm spells, during which time they may feed. Food should be provided at these times as well as a shallow dish of water for soaking, if the turtle chooses to do so. Box turtles hibernating outdoors should be protected from flies, ants and predatory marauders, such as dogs, cats, rats, skunks and opossums.

    Leptospirosis outbreaks tough to diagnose
Disease may be caused by proximity to wildlife
    Introduction
Canine outbreaks of leptospirosis in several states are sparking discussion and controversy about vaccination practices for prevention of the disease and concern for transfer of the disease to humans. Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection cause by a family of organisms known as Leptospira interrogans. Until recently, vaccines were available for only two strains (Leptospirosis canicola and L. icterhaemorrhagiae), but vaccines for two additional types (L. grippotyphosa and L. pomona) are now on the market. Controversy arises because some dogs are allergic to the carrier in the lepto vaccine; as a result, some veterinarians no longer use the inoculant in areas where the disease is not a problem. Concern about side-effects are relatively new; clinical canine leptospirosis caused by L. canicola and L. icterhaemorrhagiae is rare in the US, a situation attributed to widespread administration of the vaccine. The new outbreaks are being caused by L. grippotyphosa and L. pomona, strains that are prevalent in some species of wildlife. The theory is that the disease has entered suburban areas with populations of skunks, raccoons, opossums, deer, and small rodents and that dogs become vectors of these strains through contact with the urine of these animals. Lepto can infect livestock as well, so cattle and hogs that wade or wallow in areas contaminated by the urine of carrier animals can also get the disease.

    Winter flooding hits northwest
For the second time in three years, winter flooding put the Emergency Animal Rescue Service division of United Animal Nations to the test within commuting distance of the UAN headquarters.
The newly founded Ark Refuge, alongside the Tillamook River, was overwhelmed even before securing nonprofit status, by the arrival of animals from flooded neighbors, claimed Ark founder Eddie White, who also runs a riding stable and has apparently come under critical scrutiny from the Oregon Humane Society.
Seeking help from established animal protection organizations all over the U.S., White was assisted by the Los Angeles pet registry 1-800-4-PETS and the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.
The next bad storm hit Washington after Christmas, inundating the Northwest Organization for Animal Help on Camano Island.
Then came California's turn. Terri Crisp of UAN-EARS issued a January 2 alert anticipating animal rescue work along the Russian River and smaller streams in Santa Clara County. The Redwood Empire Veterinary Association set up temporary holding facilities in Sebastopol for the pets of people who were forced out of their homes. But the greater need came when a dike broke near Sacramento. America OnLine Pet Care Forum and Humane Society of Missouri animal emergency relief coordinator Cecily Westerman issued frequent advisories on progress, while the relatively tiny Promoting Animal Welfare Society, of Paradise, California, sent $5,000 to help EARS.
