Pet Skunk Info
If you keep in mind that they are wild animals, skunks can make great pets! The first thing folks want to know is if they stink or not. Actually, they usually don't! Skunks that are obtained from a breeder have had their musk glands removed at a very young age. However, de-scented skunks occasionally can produce a musky sort of smell. A healthy de-scented skunk shouldn't smell at all normally though. Some folks actually keep pet skunks that still have their musk glands and do not have any major problems with them. This is certainly not recommended though! Skunks are kind of intelligent too and they are excellent at catching mice!
The best kind of pet skunk to have is the striped skunk rather than the spotted or hog-nosed type. Legality Of Keeping A Pet Skunk The legality of keeping a wild pet will vary in different areas. You need to find out what the laws are in your state. You're not allowed to de-scent a wild skunk.

Skunk lover says law stinks
New rule forbids importing animals from other states, but Alabama lacks breeders.
By PATRICIA CAVANAUGH STUMB
Times Staff Writer

patricias@htimes.com
To be loved by a skunk is to be truly loved. So says Beckie Mills, a Hazel Green woman who has been raising and adoring domesticated, descented skunks for the past 15 years. As president of the Alabama Skunks as Pets organization, she preaches the joy of skunk-rearing. ''They're just so sweet, cuddly and loyal,'' Mills said, feeding her smoke-colored skunk named Myrrh vanilla wafers and dried cranberries from her hand. ''They like to sleep all curled up around your neck. ''And they're entertaining. Watching them slide across the floor and play is better than a movie.'' But the problem is, a fairly new regulation imposed by the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries restricts the sale or importation of skunks from other states. Mills said Alabama has no licensed domesticated skunk breeders. If Alabamians want skunks as pets, they are pretty much out of luck. ''And you certainly don't want to capture one from the wild to raise it,'' Mills said. ''Wild skunks carry diseases.''

Travel light. Take your canteen (full of water), your lunch and your camera. There is usually no water on the trail except at the series of waterfalls at the south end of the trail. If you wish to study the massive rock formations and to fully appreciate all the beauties of nature along the trail, you should plan for the more leisurely pace. Be extremely careful with fire and do not litter the trail. Although the trail is well defined, it is recommended that adult leadership accompany groups on the hike and that all hikers stay together.
Camping Suggestions

Excellent camping facilities are available at nearby Lake Chinnabee and Lake Cheaha. These include tent sites, outdoor fireplaces, restrooms and drinking water. Boating, swimming and fishing can be enjoyed at both lakes. Built and maintained by the Cheaha District of Choccolocco Council of Boy Scouts of America in cooperation with the United States Forestry Service.
Bald Rock Trail This is an easy to moderate trail leading to a scenic overlook. The trail can be traversed as a loop of 1/2 mile or continued as a connector to the Pinhoti Trail due east. Both plant and animal life are in abundance along these two trails.

Co-Existing With Skunks
If you mention the word "skunk" to someone, the word "stinky" can't be far behind. However, most people know little else about skunks other than the fact that they can spray when threatened. There are two types of skunks in our area: the striped skunk and the spotted skunk. The striped skunk is more commonly seen than the spotted skunk and is about the size of the average house cat, with the spotted skunk being about half the size. One is black with white stripes and one is black with white spots; both have bushy tails and are strictly nocturnal. Skunks will choose dark, quiet places to sleep in the daytime and forage for food at night. Being scavengers, their diet includes fruit, berries, eggs, rodents, scorpions, black widow spiders, dog and cat food and grubs. They are beneficial to a neighborhood due to the number of destructive insects and rodents they consume. An area inhabited by skunks will not have and abundance of mice, rats, spiders or scorpions. Skunk release Skunk spray is oil based. The odor will cling and linger. Inanimate objects that have been sprayed can be washed with a bleach water solution. For pets and people, vinegar and water baths will help, as will several enzymatic odor control products available at pet supply stores or though veterinarians. Time and fresh air also will eventually cause the odor to completely dissipate. The key is not to anger the skunk so much that he feels he must spray. If you encounter a skunk, back off. Warning behaviors will be exhibited by the skunk prior to spraying. In the striped skunk, you will observe foot-stomping and backing up, followed by a quick reversal, a raised tail and a spray. The tricky little spotted skunk will also stomp his feet, back up, but then do a handstand - quickly throwing his rear end over his head and spraying while still facing you.

48. Allegheny National Forest -- Skunks, Descenting
I haven’t desecented wild skunks. I once caught a pregnant female skunkand kept her ina pen where she gave birth to seven young ones.
http://www.allegheny-online.com/wooodshickskunks.html
Skunks By The Woods Hick (reprinted with Author's permission) It all started when my friend caught three young skunks. I knew an old woodsman who descented them (I could write a book about him). So, I drove out to his place and held the young skunks while he descented them. In the process, I learned how to do it myself. She was very friendly and a nice pet, but her feces did have a strong odor and she kept me up all night with her scampering around. So, I moved her out to an old chicken house. The next spring I put a wild male skunk on with her to breed, but he dug an escape tunnel and they eloped. I never did see her again. Skunks are night prowlers. They eat bugs, mice, and other small animals, fruit and berries among other things. They are about two feet long including their tail and their color is mostly black with a bit of white on their heads and usually two white stripes down the back. The amount of white varies greatly with a scarcity of them in some years and seeming over-abundance in others. In the late winter the males start searching for females to mate with. Here in northern Pennsylvania, it’s usually about the middle of February. Back when my friend had his descented female skunk, I would wait for a winter thaw in February and go looking for skunk tracks in the snow. Locating skunk signs in an area, I’d set a box trap to catch a male skunk. Once caught, it would be moved very carefully to the pen with the descented female and released in the pen with her. A few weeks later I’d remove the "live" male, again very carefully, and let him go.

The American Domestic Skunk Association, Inc. is an international 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded and run on love of the domestic skunk. Our primary purpose is education and our philosophy is "To educate is to protect." Our activities are aimed at safeguarding the lives of pen-raised skunks who have been captive bred for generations at licensed breeding facilities. While we do not advocate the capture of wild skunks as pets, we will readily provide assistance to wildlife rehabilitators and individuals who have come to the aid of an orphaned wild skunk. We currently have members in 38 states and 5 countries, plus a network of exotic specialists that includes zoologists, veterinarians, and animal rehabilitators. We provide the following services to all skunk owners, prospective owners, and interested parties:
  • Skunk Kitten Adoptions Research Program
Our officers and representatives receive no monetary compensation for their work. In fact, many of the expenses are covered out of our own pockets. Our payment is the knowledge that we have saved the life of a skunk or have given one more the chance at a loving and caring home.

Skunks as Pets

Skunks as pets - another unusual choice? Most skunk owners will tell you that skunks are wonderful pets and are very intelligent. Of course, pet skunks are "disarmed," usually having their musk or scent glands removed surgically at an early age. As with any exotic pet, appropriate expectations are vital to the enjoyment of a skunk as a pet. Considering a skunk as a pet? Some of the skunk's personality traits can make them a challenge to live with - they are active and curious, and will get into everything. They are also prone to stealing items to make their beds softer. They can be stubborn and headstrong. Fortunately they are also friendly, loving and very entertaining and playful. Skunks are certainly not low maintenance pets. They will demand attention and play from their owners, sometimes very persistently. They require a variety of healthy foods in their diet. They can be potty trained with persistence, using litter or papers. The home will need to be thoroughly escape proof too. As for medical care, they should be spayed or neutered at a young age, and should be vaccinated as well (against common dog and cat diseases). Before getting a skunk it is advised you find a veterinarian who is willing to comfortably treat a skunk.

SHOW CLASSES
Striped Skunk ( Mephitis mephitis ) - the "common" skunk of North America, and the one seen at this show as a domesticated pet. Other types of skunks include the Spotted Skunk (a protected fur-bearing game animal in most parts of the country, and as such, not a legal pet) and the Hog-Nosed Skunk (which has a broadened, fleshy, hairless nose, and is not usually considered as attractive as the Striped Skunk). The "classic" basic pattern consists of black or other solid-colored body fur with unbroken white stripes down the back and tail. The terms below describe color and marking variations of the Striped Skunk: Albino - a white skunk with white markings (may still be visible due to different fur shades or lengths) and general lack of any skin/eye pigmentation, resulting in pink eyes and nose. Sometimes found in the wild, usually quite sensitive to light. White with Dark Eyes - a white skunk with white markings, but with normal, eye pigmentation. Frequently mistaken for an albino at first glance, but only normally sensitive to light. Blonde - a skunk with body fur of yellow or orange color, with white markings and dark eyes. Also called Apricot-colored. Comes in many different shades.

Rescue and Rehabilitation We save orphaned babies, injured animals, and pet skunks that their owners don't want any more. Anyone who gets actively and intimately involved with wild creatures finds unexpected personal rewards. We gain a sense of unity of all nature - feeling that in preserving nature we are preserving a part of ourselves. The health of our wildlife community is an indicator of the health of our planet and of the future health of man himself. Research We gather valuable rabies statistics by interviewing past and current skunk rehabilitators and owners, health officials, animal doctors, and by studying the animals we care for. Education We tell the public that skunks are important to the balance of nature and are garden friendly. We also consult people on their skunk problems, hopefully so that adjustments can be made to live in harmony together. In schools we help children relate to the world of nature, especially to learn that animals are something quite different from a target for rock throwing or BB practice. We teach all professionals who have the need to deal with the skunk how not to get sprayed, so they won't be so quick to kill them. We make others aware of the importance of protecting animals, and also like to share some of the enrichment these sweet wild creatures bring to our lives working with them.

No wild animal should ever be kept as a pet, however within this page you will find many wildlife resourses and helpful information as well as Wild Life Sanctuary's that could use your financial donations! Wild Life Sanctuary List List of Mass. Wild life Rehabs WildLife Information If you have problems with healthy wildlife living in your yard you can humanely evict them simply by using ammonia soaked rags or moth bricks in the area of which they are coming and going from!! The best method is to poke holes in the perimeter of a coffee can, then soak a rag in ammonia and lid the top so that the smell will emit from the can even on rainy days. These are not harmful or toxic to the critters, they just really do not like the odor caused by them, the smell is similiar to wildlife urine causing them to move along! Please allow several days for this method to work, especially a mother with her young!! After all she needs to carry all these "kids" to a new home. Be patient, you may even get the wonderful opportunity to see her leaving with them to her new site, course evicting her was a shame to begin with if she was not bothering any one and appeared to be healthy! If you insist on having these critters removed from your yard, and the above methods do not work, (although this is what I do to keep critters out of my garden all summer long, effectively!!) you need to contact a local pest control licensed to handle & trap wildlife. These people, and the state of Mass. refer to them as " Problem Animal Control Specialists". By calling in a specialist, Realize that their job is: to trap and destroy the critter, as they have no choice under the law, remember the law states you can not trap and relocate the animal!

Public Health Fact Sheet: Rabies
Massachusetts Department of Public Health, 150 Tremont Street, Boston, MA 02111
What is rabies?
Rabies is a viral disease of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) that is almost always fatal. Rabies in humans is very rare in the U.S., but rabies in ground animals - especially wildlife - is common in some parts of the country. Rabies has infected ground animals in Massachusetts after 40 years of being found only in bats.
How is rabies spread?
The rabies virus lives in the saliva (spit) and other body fluids of infected animals and is spread when they bite or scratch. The virus can also be spread if one of these body fluids touches broken skin or a mucous membrane (in the mouth, nose or eyes). In caves crowded with bats, it is possible to inhale the virus floating in the air.
What kinds of animals spread rabies?
The rabies virus can infect any mammal (if it has hair or fur, it's a mammal), but it is only common among certain ones like bats, skunks, foxes and raccoons. Cats, dogs and livestock can also get rabies - and spread it to their owners - if they do not have special shots to protect them. Rabies is very rare among rodents like squirrels, rats, mice and chipmunks. Birds, fish, snakes, lizards,. turtles, and insects (bugs) cannot spread rabies.
How common is animal rabies in Massachusetts?

DOMESTIC SKUNK CARE
Prepared by Deborah Cipriani /2002
Hello my name is Deborah Cipriani I'm President of the American Domestic Skunk Assoc. of Ohio/Indiana. We Are Non -Profit Organization. We are Tax deductible 501(3) c. We take DONATIONS Cash, Paper Towels, Veggies, Pet supplies.
I am both Federal and State licensed to do educational programs, and run a Domestic Skunk Rescue in my home. People buy skunks as pets from pet stores/breeders and like many animals they decide they don't want them any more. We are here to help anyone with the care of their skunk they already own and to make sure a skunk is the right pet for you.
Call to book your Scouts, School, Festivals, Expo's etc..NOW. I will come and do a nice presentation on skunks. Also bring live skunks to show. For Ohio,Indiana,Michigan and PA.
This Ohio/Indiana group also pays for a lot of RESEARCH done on skunks. Example> we are doing Thyroid test to get a base line on skunks, Blood test to get a base line, titer testing to see if skunks really need to be vaccinated every year. Most vets go by cat or dog charts, we want to have a chart for skunks. We are doing this for all skunks around the world so we can have a better understanding of them.
Skunks were once thought to be part of the same animal family as weasels, ferrets, and badgers, but thanks to DNA testing they are found to be more distantly related and were identified as a separate family: Order Carnivora, Family Mephitidae, Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis), Hooded Skunk (Mephitis macroura), Hog-nosed Skunk (Conepatus), Spotted Skunk (Spilogale).

Animals-Infancy-Juvenile literature. Kindergarten-grade 3 / Ages 5-8. Review by Valerie Nielsen. Reviewed from prepublication copy. Wild Babies follows two earlier collaborations by this talented team, A Mountain Alphabet ( CM (14), March 14, 1997) and When We Go Camping ( CM (1), Sept. 7, 2001) . Each double page spread in this beautiful book includes a black and white drawing of a wild creature and on the opposing page a richly coloured meticulously detailed painting depicting the wild babies in their habitat. A single line of poetic text accompanies each of the twelve sets of illustrations. For each wild family, the author selects a different verb to describe its movements: raccoons steal, a moose calf explores, goslings snuggle, skunks snuffle, mountain goats clamber, foxes dash, a loon chick sails and cougar cubs tumble and pounce. Young children will be delighted with the opportunity to discover secrets hiding in each painting. They must look very closely to find hidden animals or clues to the animal which is featured on the next page. Those children who are beginning to be literate will enjoy hunting for words the artist has cleverly camouflaged in the foliage surrounding the wild creatures. A good light and a child's skills of observation are necessary but may not be sufficient to succeed at this challenge. Fortunately for adults sharing this book with little ones, the author has included a legend at the end of the book, specifying exactly what to look for and where each item is hidden.
