The national currency is the Slovak Koruna (SKK).
Geography
Slovakia covers an area of 49,035 square kilometres in central Europe. It shares borders with Poland and the Czech Republic in the north, Austria in the west, Hungary in the south and Ukraine in the east. The country consists of highlands and lowlands. The Carpathian mountains reach into central and northern Slovakia, while southern and eastern Slovakia is flat. The Danube is the most important river, linking Slovakia with Vienna, the Rhine-Main canal and Black Sea ports. In the south in the country the ?itný Ostrov covers an area of 123,612 hectares, making it the largest river island in Europe.
Population
There are 5.3 million people living in Slovakia and average population density is 109 inhabitants per square kilometre. Slovakia is a veritable hotchpotch of ethnic groups. Eighty-six per cent of the population are Slovaks and 10 per cent are Hungarian, but there are also Roma, Czech, German and Polish minorities. The largest city in Slovakia is Bratislava, with a population of 450,000. Altogether, there are 15 religious denominations in Slovakia, 29 orders of nuns and 15 of monks. Sixty per cent of the population are Roman Catholics, while 6.2 per cent are Protestants. Other communities are Catholics of the Slovak rite and Calvinists.

The longest river is the Danube which also borders on Austria and Hungary and flows along with its tributaties (Morava, Vah, Hron, Ipel, Tisa and others) into the Black sea, and the river Poprad and Dunajec flow into the Baltic Sea.
