There is not a great deal of information available about ancestors from eastern Slovakia. In fact, formal message boards for many Slovak surnames are only now becoming common. Most of the emigrants from this area appear to have left it at the end of the 19th century or early in the 20th century, when it was a remote corner of the kingdom of Hungary (part of the empire of Austria - Hungary). My personal searches are for the surnames Bretcko, Kmetz, Kuzma, Lucas, and Pretushka. Send me an e-mail and let me know if we share an interest in these surnames. I would be happy to exchange information with you.

It is very sad that this is the only available book in English dealing with quite obscure topic of Slovak history. The author is a known defender of the First Slovak Republic (aka Slovak state) during the WWII and his positions are very close to a "national socialist", i.e., fascist. Moreover, his romantic approach to Slovak medieval history is preposterous. For somebody interested in this topic it may be a useful reading what is NOT a Slovak history. Hopefully, in the near future we will have translations of books written by respected historians (Kirschbaum is neither). finally a look at the past I enjoyed reading about the history of Slovakia as I have had too few reference points in the past. Starting from 200,000BC! It lacks extra maps to show towns spoken about in the body of text. A breakdown of major cities and their importance would help as well.

After formation of the Czechoslovak Republic the establishment of the Central Library at the Ministry of Railways in 1919 is considered to be the basis for information operation in the transport resort. After several reorganisations it was renamed to the Central Technical Library of the Ministry of Transport and it continued in its library operation (since 1959 as one of VUD sections). In 1953 the documentation part was separated from the library. The Learned and Documentation Group of the Transport Scientific and Research Institute has developed from it. It laid the foundations for establishment of the Technical and Economic Information Management Centre at the Transport Library and Research Centre. In 1969 was founded the independent Transport Research Institute in Zilina, (Branch Institute of VUD Prague till then). VUD Zilina left some places of work in Prague, including ODIS. In 1979 ODIS was separated from VUD Zilina (together with reference stock) and activated at the Transport Computer Art Centre (TCAC), Prague. At the same time the Section Information Centre (BIC) was constituted at VUD Zilina. BIC in the Transport Research Institute in Zilina functioned by the end of 1992 (separation of the Czechoslovak Federal Republic), when upon the decision of the Minister of Transport, Telecommunications and Public Works Transport Research Institute Zilina was authorised to function as Technical Library and Information Centre (ODIS VTEI) of the SR transport.

Home History Staff Projects ... Contact Visitor No. Last Update: Optimised for resolution 800x600 History of the Laboratory The laboratory of membrane processes was founded in connection with the research of pertraction into emulsions by Š. Schlosser in the department laboratory in VÚRUP in 1972. The research was carried out within the adsorption group headed by Prof. E. Kossaczký. A technology for removal of ammonia from wastewaters was developed and tested in a four stage cascaded contactor for pertraction into emulsion (in cooperation with Duslo, Ša¾a). In connection with this it was necessary to develop splitting of very stable W/O emulsions in a high voltage electric field. The research of three phase hollow fiber contactors has started in 1990. New types of hollow fiber contactors were developed, as shown in papers (2, 3, 11, 27). Technologies for the recovery of higher value organic acids from waste solutions have been developed in cooperation with the industry. A project Copernicus granted for the years 1994 –1996 decisively supported research activities of the group. The research of microfiltration through ceramic membranes started J. Stopka and Š. Schlosser in 1995. INCO Copernicus grant for 1999 - 2001 enabled a further progress in the research of pertraction and MBSE. Thanks to these results and cooperation with industry a new process was developed for the recovery of heterocyclic carboxylic acid from waste solutions. The new PhD student R. Kertész (2000) and external one T. Bakalár (2002, from the Faculty of Mining of the Technical University of Košice) contribute to activities of the membrane group.

    The World War II Years
On September 28, 1938 Chamberlain appealed to Hitler for a conference. Hitler met the next day, at Munich, with the chiefs of government of France, Italy, and Britain. The Czechoslovak government was neither invited nor consulted. On September 29, the Munich Agreement was signed by Germany, Italy, France, and Britain. The Czechoslovak government capitulated September 30 and agreed to abide by the agreement.
The Munich Agreement stipulated that Czechoslovakia must cede Sudeten territory to Germany. German occupation of the Sudetenland would be completed by October 10. An international commission (representing Germany, Britain, France, Italy, and Czechoslovakia) would supervise a plebiscite to determine the final frontier. Britain and France promised to join in an international guarantee of the new frontiers against unprovoked aggression. Germany and Italy, however, would not join in the guarantee until the Polish and Hungarian minority problems were settled. The First Republic Tiso with Nazi German representatives On March 14, 1939, Slovakia declared its independence, causing itself the Slovak Republic. Monsignor Tiso was elected president of this new republic. A clerical nationalist, Tiso opposed the Nazification of Slovak society and hoped instead to establish Slovakia as a nationalist, Christian, corporative state. His plan conflicted with that of Slovak radicals who were organized into the paramilitary Hlinka Guards. The latter cooperated closely with the Nazi-oriented German minority led by Franz Karmasin. Radicals dominated the Slovak government. Vojtech Tuka, recently released from prison, became prime minister; his associate, Ferdinand Durcansky, was named foreign minister. Alexander Mach, head of the Hlinka Guards, was propaganda minister. German "advisory missions" were appointed to all Slovak ministries, and German troops were stationed in Slovakia beginning March 15, 1939.
