Culture
Slovene is a South Slavic language written in the Roman alphabet. It's closely related to Croatian and Serbian, but the languages are not mutually intelligible. Slovene is grammatically complex, with lots of cases, genders and tenses. Fortunately for non-Slovenian speakers, virtually everyone in Slovenia speaks another language: usually Croatian, Serbian, German, English and/or Italian (in that order). English is the preferred language of the young. Slovenia's most beloved writer is the Romantic poet France Preseren (1800-49), whose lyric poems set new standards for Slovenian literature and helped raise national consciousness. Since WWII, many Slovenian folk traditions have been lost, but compilations by the trio Trutamora Slovenica go back to the roots of Slovenian folk music. Popular music runs the gamut, but it was punk in the late 1970s and early 1980s that grabbed straitlaced Slovenia by the collar and shook it up. Postmodernist painting and sculpture has been dominated since the 1980s by the multimedia group Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK) and the five-member anonymous artists' cooperative IRWIN. Many notable buildings and public squares in Slovenia were designed by architect Joze Plecnik (1872-1957), whose image adorns the 500 SIT note. Slovenian cuisine, which traditionally relies heavily on venison and fish, is heavily influenced by that of its neighbours. From Austria, it's

Country info The Republic of Slovenia lies at the heart of Europe where the Alps and the Mediterranean meet the Pannonian plains and the mysterious Karst. Slovenia has a population of 2 million, the official language is Slovene, one of the South Slavonic languages. Our capital city is Ljubljana and the current temperature here is 5°C, rain. In Slovenia, the sun shines approximately 2000 hours per year. And yes, there is plenty of snow in the winter. As a small, beautiful and picturesque country, Slovenia makes a great tourist destination. Mountains, lakes, waterfalls, forests, caves, hills, plains, rivers and the sea - you name it, you can find it all within a modest 20.273 km2 (half the size of Switzerland), as well as many natural and landscape parks. You can ski in the morning and surrender yourself to the luxury of the Adriatic Sea in the afternoon. Slovenia has 46.6 km of sea coast - an inch per inhabitant. The highest mountain is called Triglav - the name meaning "three-heads" - and it is 2864m high. The mountain is a true national symbol, featuring on the national coat of arms and the flag Slovenia is also known for its great wines and delicious traditional food.

    Art and Culture in Slovenia
Brezice Castle The sensibility of Slovenes to their own culture is very intensive. The fact that the Slovene nation is small in number, with two million inhabitants, has meant that the self-preservation instinct of the national community from the very start of its existence has been greatly directed towards the defence of culture. The result of this is a richly divergent cultural network of institutions, organisations and cultural societies which is at least comparable with developed European countries, and a rich cultural life not only in the major cities, but practically everywhere. There is a considerable number of performances and events each year in the country that have become traditional and have also becomme well-known abroad. One of the most known cultural events is the Graphics Biennial in Ljubljana which has acquired great renown as one of the major European art presentations. Among other cultural events worth mentioning are the annual Ljubljana Festival , the Lent Festival in Maribor, the Exodus Festival in Ljubljana, the Borstnik Theatre Meeting in Maribor, the PEN meeting at Bled, and the meeting of writers at Vilenica. In May and June 1997 Ljubljana hosted

Slovenia Time and Date Slovenia Culture Back to Top Austrian Empress Maria Theresa's educational reforms of the 18th century produced a reading public for the eloquent Romantic poet France Prešeren, Slovene literature's pater patriae. Novels followed in the late 1800s. The luminaries of the Modern school, the novelist Ivan Cankar and the poet Oton Zupancic, were the first of a long list of politically influential writers. Among interwar figures were the harshly realistic novelist Prezihov Voranc and the avant-gardist Srecko Kosovel. Poet Edvard Kocbek stood out during and after World War II; an antifascist, he suffered at the hands of ex-comrades. Postwar literary celebrities include Ciril Zlobec, Niko Grafenauer, and Drago Jancar. Music and the visual arts also have a rich heritage. Slovenes are especially proud of the Renaissance composer Jakob Petelin Gallus-Carniolus, known in the German-speaking world as Jacob Handl. Theater and the media are remarkably creative.
