Country Info Slovenia Introduction Slovenia General Data Slovenia Maps Slovenia Culture ... Slovenia Time and Date Slovenia Economy Back to Top independence Slovenia was the most prosperous of the six Yugoslav republics. However, the wars that took place in the region during the early and mid-1990s seriously affected Slovenia’s economy. The gross domestic product (GDP) per capita was $6,052 in 1992, a sharp decline from the pre-independence figure of $8,658 in 1990. Trade with other countries and tourism were also limited by the war, and the large population of war refugees was a further drain on the economy. In recent years, economic leaders have made efforts to turn the economy around, implementing market and bank reforms and promoting privatization. The presence of a non-Communist government since 1990, along with the republic’s sound infrastructure and skilled workforce, helped reverse the downward trend. The GDP began to grow in 1993. the modernization and diversification of the Slovene economy began in the late Habsburg era. Owing in part to this head start, Slovenia made great progress (at least by communist standards) under Yugoslavia's market-oriented, “self-management” form of socialism. With only 8 percent of Yugoslavia's population, Slovenes produced 20 percent of its wealth and 30 percent of its exports. By the 1980s, however, the system had succumbed to debt and stagnation, and resentment over the Belgrade government's policy of distributing subsidies from the more prosperous northern republics to the backward and often corrupt southern republics was probably the catalyst of Slovene independence.

The British Embassy in Ljubljana is the official representation of the British Government in Slovenia. The Embassy opened in September 1992. There are seven UK-based members of staff, including the ambassador, Mr Hugh Mortimer , and fifteen locally engaged staff. The objectives of the Embassy are:
  • To promote close political, cultural and trading relations between the UK and Slovenia.
  • To continue to support Slovenia's progress towards integration into international political, economic and security structures, particular the EU and NATO.
  • To provide an efficient and effective consular service to British residents in Slovenia and to advise Slovenian citizens travelling to the UK.
Reflecting the importance it attaches to its global foreign policy interests, the United Kingdom is a member of a very wide range of international organisations including the United Nations (permanent member of the Security Council), the European Union, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the Council of Europe, and the Commonwealth, of which Queen Elizabeth is the titular head.

The survey Mladina 2000 (Youth 2000), prepared by the Centre for Social Psychology of the Faculty of Social Sciences, shows that young people give the highest levels of trust only to friends and family. Of the respondents to the survey, 80 per cent do not trust political parties and 75 per cent do not trust politicians. President Kučan fared better—only 40.5 per cent said that they do not trust him. The National Human Development Report for 2000-2001, released last month, similarly showed very low levels of trust in politics and politicians. That report accredits the trend to public frustration with the inefficiency and insufficient responsiveness of the government. Eurosceptics take the lead Most Slovenes do not support membership in the European Union, according to the results of the March Politbarometer survey of the Center for Public Opinion Research that were released this week.

GOVERNMENT AND POLITICAL CONDITIONS
Slovenia enjoys excellent relations with the United States and cooperates with it actively on a number of fronts. From 1998 to 2000, Slovenia occupied a nonpermanent seat on the UN Security Council and in that capacity distinguished itself with a constructive, creative, and consensus-oriented activism. Slovenia has been a member of the United Nations since May 1992 and of the Council of Europe since May 1993. Slovenia signed an association agreement with the European Union in 1996 and is a member of the Central European Free Trade Agreement. Slovenia also is a member of all major international financial institutions (the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank Group, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development) as well as 40 other international organizations, among them the World Trade Organization, of which it is a founding member.
Since the breakup of the former Yugoslavia, Slovenia has instituted a stable, multi-party, democratic political system, characterized by regular elections, a free press, and an excellent human rights record. Slovenia is a parliamentary democracy and constitutional republic. Within its government, power is shared between a directly elected president, a prime minister, and a bicameral legislature (Parliament). Parliament is composed of the 90-member National Assemblywhich takes the lead on virtually all legislative issuesand the National Council, a largely advisory body composed of representatives from social, economic, professional, and local interests. The Constitutional Court has the highest power of review of legislation to ensure its consistency with Slovenia's constitution. Its nine judges are elected for 9-year terms.
