The organisation of the Slovene paraplegics was founded on 16 April 1969, named the Section of Paraplegics and Quadriplegics of Slovenia. Due to the increasing needs and the development of programmes, demands for reorganisation were soon heard, so on 20 November 1973 the Society of Paraplegics of Slovenia was formed. Only six years later, on 20 November 1979, the Society grew into the Association of Paraplegics of Slovenia with nine regional branches, which was the result of outstanding activity and the wish to be organized in accordance with the Slovene regions. The same system in the way of organizing is relevant today.
At the moment the membership numbers 856 members, while during the period of our organisation 419 members have died. Every year approximately 50 new members are affiliated, and approximately 25 members die. The membership consists of two thirds of paraplegics and one third of quadriplegics. Men and women are in the same proportion.
The average age of the members is 46 years. The most frequent reason for invalidity - paraplegia (paralysis of the lower half of the body) and quadriplegia (paralysis of all four limbs) are: road and flying accidents, falls from a height (trees, buildings, parachute), dives, spinal surgery. Death is most frequently caused by urinary tract disease, infections, a decubitus ulcer.

History of Slovenia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. From as early as the 9th century Slovenia had fallen under foreign rulers, including partial but cooperative control by Bavarian dukes and the Republic of Venice . With the exception of Napoleon 's 4-year tutelage of parts of Slovenia and Croatia the "Illyrian Provinces" Slovenia was part of the Habsburg empire from the 14th century until . Nevertheless, Slovenia strongly resisted Germanizing influences and retained its unique Slavic language and culture. In 1918, after World War I , the Slovenes joined with other southern Slav states such in forming the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes

History against occupation of Slovenia
By Steve Painter History is against the Serbian-dominated Yugoslav government in its attempt to hold the federation together by force of arms. While the federal army was able to roll through Slovenia and seize control of border posts and key positions last week, the political and economic costs of a long occupation will quickly begin to tell. As the Soviet Union found in Czechoslovakia after its 1968 invasion, military occupation, and even widespread repression, cannot provide a long-term basis for government in the post-capitalist states of eastern Europe. Sullen non-cooperation became almost a way of life in post-occupation Czechoslovakia, contributing heavily to the economy's near-breakdown by the late 1980s. It is likely a similar mood will develop in Slovenia and neighbouring Croatia even if the central government succeeds for the moment with its military crackdown. In recent referendums, Slovenes and Croats voted overwhelmingly for independence, though both republics have made it clear they would prefer a looser Yugoslav federation rather than complete break-up. Slovenia is the most prosperous and economically advanced of the Yugoslav republics, heavily influenced historically by its proximity to Austria, which today has one of the highest living standards in Europe. But it is also one of the smallest republics in the federation, with Slovenes making up less than 10% of the country's 25 million people.

Jews lived in Slovenia from the 13th century until they were expelled in 1496 by Emperor Maximilian I of Austria. The biggest rabbinical center was at Maribor (Marburg) in the Styria district. Maribor had a "Jewish Street" as early as 1277 near the river Drava (Drau) and a synagogue inside the walled city. Rabbi Israel Isserlein taught there. His official title was "Landesrabbiner fuer Steiermark, Krain, und Korushka." He was succeeded by his pupil R. Joseph b. Moses. Other Jewish communities existed at Ptuj (Poetovia), Celje, Radgona, and Ljubljana. Jews were engaged in viticulture, and traded in horses and cattle. top

Slovenian National Insignia
Extraordinary historical circumstances have influenced the development and the appearance of the national insignia of the Republic of Slovenia, which therefore reflect the experience of the Slovenian nation over the centuries: the struggle for liberty, against indiscriminate foreign oppression, the struggle to preserve the Slovenian language, which was not given its homeland rights, the struggle for a geographically unified state, and finally, the struggle for basic political and human rights. National Insignia
The flag of the Republic of Slovenia consists of the generic Slovenian tricolor and the Slovenian coat of arms in the upper left. The Slovenian tricolor dates back to the "springtime of nations" of 1848 and is based on the flag of the Duchy of Carniola (Kranjska), then the "very notion of Slovenedom". The flag of Carniola derives its white-blue-red combination from the colors of the Carniolan coat of arms. The coat of arms of the Republic of Slovenia is in the form of a shield. The shield bears a central image of Mountain Triglav in white on a blue background, with two undulating blue lines below it and three six-pointed golden stars, arranged in an inverted triangle, above it. The shield has a red border. The Slovenian coat of arms is a heraldic composite, combining elements from the coats of arms of the Counts of Celje (golden stars), the Duchy of Carniola (colors) and the Socialist Republic of Slovenia (Mountain Triglav).

Slovenia Time and Date Slovenia History Back to Top Roman Empire (27 bc-ad 476), Slovenia was part of the provinces of Pannonia and Noricum. During the 6th century ad, the region was invaded by the Mongolian Avars and later by Slavs who threw off Avar domination. A period of Bavarian rule ensued, during which most of the people converted to Roman Catholicism. In ad 623, chieftain Franko Samo created the first independent Slovene state, which stretched from Lake Balaton (now located within Hungary) to the Mediterranean. It lasted until late in the 8th century, when the region became part of the Frankish Empire. In the 10th century it was reorganized as the duchy of Carantania by Holy Roman Emperor Otto I. From 1335 until 1918, except for a brief interlude from 1809 to 1814, Slovenes were governed by the Habsburgs of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the Austrian crown lands of Kärnten (Carinthia), Carniola, and Steiermark (Styria), except for a minority in the republic of Venice. Independent Slovenia’s first presidential and parliamentary elections were held in December 1992. Milan Kucan, president of the republic since 1990, was reelected to the office by 64 percent of the vote. The center-left Liberal Democracy of Slovenia (LDS), headed by Janez Drnovšek, won a plurality of seats in parliament, and Drnovšek became the country’s prime minister. The Christian Democratic Party won the second largest number of parliamentary seats.

History and Government
History:
After 14 months, during which both Slovenia and Croatia became increasingly alienated from Belgrade, Slovenia declared independence. The central Government immediately sent in armoured convoys to take control of federal border posts and key installations in the capital Ljubljana. The army was clearly not expecting the resistance put up by well-prepared Slovene irregulars and after a few weeks of sporadic and largely inconclusive fighting, a ceasefire was reached. By October 1991, all federal military forces had left the republic, and Slovenia proclaimed its independence on 8 October. Full international recognition followed in January 1992, after which the DEMOS Government collapsed, having achieved its sole objective of securing international recognition.
Slovenia was admitted to the United Nations in May 1992. A non-party government of technocrats took over pending new elections. Slovenia is the only one of the ex-Yugoslav republics to have a substantial, as opposed to a merely nominal, multi-party democracy, although it is on the road to permanent coalition politics with three parties (the customary European mix of centre-right, centre-left and liberal) as the main contestants.

Child Neurology in Slovenia -
historical background

The beginings of Child Neurology in Slovenia date back in the year 1954 when American-Slovene Women Association donated to the Childrens Hospital in Ljubljana the first 8-channel electroencephalograph (Eden®), which was also the first EEG machine in the country. Professor Jože Jeras was designated by existing administrative director to introduce electroencephalography (and also electrocardiography) in everyday clinical practice as new diagnostic tools. He himself wrote about that time that " the birthplace of Child Neurology happened to be not on the clinical grounds but in the neurophysiology lab". In the same year (1954) the first slovene outpatient clinic (dispansery) for children and adolescents with epilepsy was established and soon after the inpatient unit specialized in neurological diseases of infants, children and adolescents was opened at Childrens Hospital Ljubljana. The head of the unit (future Neuropsychiatirc Department) became dr Ivica Tivadar, who has become also close co-worker with professor Jeras and together they wrote the book in English language: Epilepsies in Children in 1973 and got also the State Award for it. It was during this period and owing to dr Tivadar that also multidisciplinary approach and team work came into everyday practice and meetings with different other specialist's groups became common (e.g. neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, neurophysiologists etc).
