Slovenia
HISTORY
From as early as the ninth century, Slovenia has fallen under foreign rulers, including partial control by Bavarian dukes and the Republic of Venice. With the exception of Napoleon's 4-year tutelage of parts of Slovenia and Croatia the "Illyrian Provinces" Slovenia was part of the Hapsburg empire from the 14th century until 1918. Nevertheless, Slovenia resisted Germanizing influences and retained its unique Slavic language and culture. As a young independent republic, Slovenia pursued economic stabilization and further political openness, while emphasizing its Western outlook and central European heritage. Today, with a growing regional profile, as a nonpermanent member of the UN Security Council, a participant in the SFOR deployment in Bosnia, and a charter WTO member, Slovenia plays a role on the world stage quite out of proportion to its small size (population 2 million). Slovenia is the most western slavic nation.Slovenia has a rich history that is observed today through thier summer festivals featuring theater and music in Ljubljana, the capital. Today there is a saying about Slovenia - it is the golden goose that got away! The early Slovenians settled in the river valley of the Danube Basin in the eastern Alps in the 6th century. In 748, Slovenia was brought under Germanic rule, by the Frankish Empire. In 1278, Habsburgs, the Austrian royal family gained control of Slovenia. Austria ruled until 1918,except for a period of French control which lasted from 1809 to 1850. After World War I ended in 1918, Slovenia became apart of a new state called the Kingdom of the Serbs. The name of the country was changed to Yugoslavia in 1929. Slovenians wanted to split apart from Yugoslavia, as did Crotia and Austria. They really wanted to be free!
With the recognition of its independance granted by the European community in 1992, the country began moving its economy and community to forward in western Europe. Slovenia is considered one of the most promising canidates for EU (the European trading company) admission and expects to join by 2003. In July 2001, Slovenia and Croatia resolved a border dispute, which had persisted since the two contries gained independance from Yugoslavia in 1991. So,as you can see, Slovenia was and still is a wonderful country with lots of history. After its fight for independence, it was still beautiful.Croatia and Slovenia reduced their dispute, allowing Slovenia to gain independence. They just became a country in 1992. The golden goose is finally free!

A FEW FRAGMENTS FROM THE HISTORY OF WINEGROWING IN SLOVENIA
ABSTRACT
The article briefly presents the significance of the 18th and 19th centuries for the history of winegrowing and wine trade in Slovenia. Its main aim was to establish to what extent winegrowing was affected by various scientific discoveries, technological development, the birth of railway, and the occurrence of wine pests. At the end of the article the author presents some basic historical, ethnological and rather old winegrowing written documents, which bear witness, in some way or another, to the history of winegrowing in Slovenia. Key words: wine trade, winegrowing, winery, wine, technology, trade, wine pests

http://www.usembassy.si/embhistory.htm
History of the U.S. Embassy in Slovenia In 1970 the United States Information Service established an office in Ljubljana as one of its eight Yugoslavia posts. Slovenia's road to democracy began when the General Assembly of the Yugoslav Republic of Slovenia adopted an amendment to the constitution giving the people of Slovenia the right to secede from Yugoslavia. In April 1990, parliamentary elections were held and an anticommunist coalition (DEMOS) obtained a majority in Slovenia's Parliament and Milan Kucan was elected Slovenia's first President. More than 88 percent of the electorate voted for independence on December 23, 1990 and the Slovenian Parliament adopted a new constitutional charter on sovereignty, declaring independence from the former Yugoslavia June 25, 1991.
Once its independence and sovereignty were secure, Slovenia earnestly began its diplomatic campaign to gain international recognition. The United States officially recognized Slovenia on April 7, 1992 and established the Embassy at 3:00 p.m. August 25, 1992.
Much has changed since the Embassy was temporarily located in the front rooms of USIS at Cankarjeva 11. Later in 1992 the Embassy moved to a location at Prazakova 4. Allan Wendt, who opened the Embassy as Chargé d'Affaires, became the first United States Ambassador to Slovenia with a staff of 2 full-time Americans (Consular officer David Ball and a communications officer) and 5 foreign service national employees in May 1993. The Embassy's growth spurt began with Chargé d'Affaires Mahlon Henderson's arrival in Slovenia on July 27, 1993.
