venomous snakes as pets ( snakes charm, 2000). general InformationAbout Venomous snakes. Types of venomous snakes have been divided
http://www.zoocheck.com/programs/exotic/venom/snake.shtml
Venomous snakes and snake bite Prepared by Reeshma Haji, July 2000 Incidents of venomous snake bites and their deleterious effects have been well documented in North American newspapers. In one year, worldwide, an estimated 300,000 people are bitten by snakes (Roberts, 1987). The number of deaths per annum attributed to snake bite is estimated at 50,000-100,000 ("Deadly viper," 2000). (See Appendix A ). Although the total number of bites in Canada and the United States is lower than that of other countries, a number of fatalities resulting from envenomation have occurred. It has been estimated that 8,000 bites from venomous snakes occur each year in the United States (Dart & Gomez, 1996). In August of 1992, Larry Moor of Langley, British Columbia died shortly after a bite from an Egyptian cobra. Of particular interest is the fact that Mr. Moor was dedicated to educating the public about snakes. He was the founder of the B.C. Association of Reptile Owners and used to visit schools to correct children’s misconceptions about snakes and to teach them about their proper handling. ("Cobra bite," 1992; "Snake handler,"1992). Expertise in the area of venomous snakes does not ensure protection against a potentially fatal snake bite. More evidence for this comes from the case of Brian Leslie West from Emmitsburg, Maryland. Mr. West instructed local paramedics in the treatment of snake bite. However, in May of 1992 he went into cardiac arrest and died following a bite from an Indian king cobra ("Bite kills," 1992). More recently, in December 1999, a zoo volunteer in California was fatally bitten by one of 10 venomous snakes she kept in her home ("Bite kills," 1999). These incidents are a small sample of the sort of tragic events that can occur as a result of keeping and handling venomous snakes.

CSL Antivenom Handbook Australian Snakes and Snakebite Return to Medical Treatment Contents Toxinology home page General Principles Australia's venomous snakes are all Elapid (cobra type) snakes, with small to medium sized paired fangs at the front of the mouth. The venom glands are posterior to the eye and it appears the snake can control venom ejection, so that it is possible for the snake to bite, leave bite marks or scratches, yet not inject any venom (the "dry bite"). Each group of snakes has distinctive venom, causing typical local and general effects, but there is always the potential for variability in venom action within a single species of snake, depending on geographic variation and individual variation. Some key components of Australian snake venoms are listed below. Not all species have all components (see details for each group under respective antivenoms). Karma: divine posted 01-10-2001 04:32 PM Psychologists say that the limbic system controls the basic instincts for survival: feeding, fighting, self-preservation, and reproduction. Now there's a game that taps directly into these primal instincts: Slithereens, the new wise-crackin', snake-slidin' game from Ambrosia Software. Set in the backyard of the evil Dr. Funkengruven, Slithereens is an adventure that will satisfy your appetite for action. You are Luther, a peaceful snake who was surgically sassified and imbued with a hunger for snakemeat. Unfortunately, there are hundreds of other snakes like you, each wanting the same thing: to munch on you! Slide Luther through the rocky maze, while eating other snakes, rodents, birds, and other yummies. Avoid getting eaten, and protect your eggs from other animals. Taunt your enemies with disrespectful words. Survive, and live to munch another day. Fail, and... die, but you can always just start another game, right?

Animal Allsorts The Reptile House
Care Sheet for Snakes Last Revision 1 Feb 1995 By Bill Root and Paul Hollander (pholland@iastate.edu) (Freely Distributable) Each snake has various needs that must be met in order to keep it in good health in captivity. The following is an outline of factors that are important to the well-being of your pet. 1.Temperature 2.Housing 3.Feeding 4.Skin Shedding 5.Parasites and Disease 6.Sexing and Breeding 7.Records 8.Further Reading TEMPERATURE A reptile has the same temperature as its surroundings; it simply moves to a warmer area to heat up and a colder spot to cool down. Most have an "optimum" body temperature that can be maintained within a few degrees and that generally lies between 80 and 88 degrees Fahrenheit. Most tropical species prefer the top half of that range, and most temperate zone snakes like the bottom half. A temperature gradient in the cage lets the snake decide how warm it wants to be. A thermometer can be the herper's best friend because a snake won't eat if it's more than a few degrees below optimum temperature.Snakes have a day-night temperature cycle in the wild. Some studies indicate that if a reptile is constantly held at optimum temperature for weeks, it suffers heat stress. Males also have the sperm killed. It is probably best for a snake to spend the night at a temperature 5 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit below its daytime activity temperature. HOUSING Cages should be of adequate size, easy to keep clean, adequately ventilated, and escape proof. Aquariums with pegboard tops make good cages. Plastic shoe boxes and storage boxes also make good cages after enough air holes have been cut in them. Plastic cages up to four feet long are available commercially from Neodesha Plastics, Neodesha, KS. Big cages can be made of wood and pegboard, but not wire mesh or screen because a snake can rub its nose raw on wire. Most snakes do not need much space. Suggested minimum cage sizes are 1/2 square foot of floor space per foot of snake for those up to six feet in length and 3/4 square foot of floor space for those six to nine feet long. Increase the suggested minimum cage sizes 25% for each additional snake.

    Miscellaneous Brown Tree Snake Insights.
An integrated pest management approach using a multiplicity of pest control techniques may be the best approach for snake control. The discipline range of the investigators should not be limited to Biologists or Ecologists but should include a wide variety of academic disciplines and practical backgrounds. The snake could be studied by many people in the community. Snakes are available from the department. My only advice would be to study independently keeping the discouraging egotists at bay. One area ripe for research is brown tree snake reproduction and mating behavior / sociobiology. Only once has a brown tree snake been observed mating, and that was in captivity. Sperm storage is suspected by some although a sperm reservoir has not been located in the female's reproductive system. Exact conditions for incubation are unknown. The list of unknowns goes on and on... [Photo: 2 brown tree snake eggs of a clutch of about nine eggs (img).] The best bait for the brown tree snake may easily be a hormone (including pheromones) or other biochemical associated both with egg-laying and pregnancy. More likely it is a mixture of these chemicals. I know this because there have been so many reports of snakes waiting in bird nests for birds to lay eggs, snakes being attracted to newborn puppies, etc. One lady even came into the lab and told me that she knows when she is pregnant because a Brown Tree Snake enters the house.

Puff adder
Bitis arietans Description: Yellowish, light brown, or orange with chevron-shaped dark brown or black bars. Characteristics: The puff adder is the second largest of the dangerous vipers. It is one of the most common snakes in Africa. It is largely nocturnal, hunting at night and seeking shelter during the day's heat. It is not shy when approached. It draws its head close to its coils, makes a loud hissing sound, and is quick to strike any intruder. Its venom is strongly hemotoxic, destroying bloods cells and causing extensive tissue damage. Habitat: Arid regions to swamps and dense forests. Common around human settlements. Length: Average 1.2 meters, maximum 1.8 meters. Distribution: Most of Africa, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, Israel, and Jordan. Rhinoceros viper or river jack
Bitis nasicornis Description: Brightly colored with purplish to reddish-brown markings and black and light olive markings along the back. On its head it has a triangular marking that starts at the tip of the nose. It has a pair of long horns (scales) on the tip of its nose. Characteristics: Its appearance is awesome; its horns and very rough scales give it a sinister look. It has an irritable disposition. It is not aggressive but will stand its ground ready to strike if disturbed. Its venom is neurotoxic and hemotoxic.

Climate, Conditions, Snakes, and Creepy Crawlers Climate
TEMPERATURE
Remember that you are in the tropics: it is hot and humid, and there are snakes and creepy-crawlies. It is the latter though, which concerns people the most. Well, snakes and insects are not as bothersome as your imagination would have you believe. It is the combination of heat and high humidity that is the greater problem. On the Osa Peninsula temperatures seldom drop below 27oC (80oF), in the rainy season, and may exceed 35oC (95oF), in the dry season. Combined with the high humidity (60 - 100%), conditions here can become uncomfortable, even oppressive. Physical activity in such conditions is much more tiring than in cooler climes, and unless you take the appropriate precautions, severe sunburn, heat exhaustion, sunstroke and dehydration are likely consequences. Your guide will give you precautionary advice during adventure tours. We recommend you bring with you: * Light clothing * An effective sun block. * Sunglasses and a peaked cap or a wide-brimmed hat * Water bottle of one liter (2 - 3 pints) or more.

FAMILY LEPTOTYPHLOPIDAE (slender blind snakes)
This family of snakes is composed of 50 species in two families. They are generally regarded as the most primitive snakes, having a pelvic girdle and vestiglial hind limbs. They have a single lung and oviduct and are well adapted to their burrowing life style. They feed exclusively on small invertebrates such as ant and termite larvae. Leptotyphlopids are oviparous. There are two species of this family in North America. Leptotyphlops dulcis Texas Blind Snake Leptotyphlops humilis Western Blind Snake
FAMILY BOIDAE (boas and pythons)
Boidae is a large family of snakes that includes all five of the world's giant snakes. Boids are an ancient family that are characterized by a mixture of modern and primitive traits. They have flexible jaws found in more advanced families but also retain a pelvic girdle, vestigial hind limbs, and many use both lungs. While there are close to one hundred species of boids worldwide, there are only two species of boas found in North America, both in the sub-family Eryciniae.
