An Overview of American Soccer History
By Dave Litterer spectrum@sover.net This page is a detailed historical overview of United States soccer from its roots in the 19th century to the present day. NEW: The first sections, from 1609-1921 have been completely revised and extensed. Enjoy!
    Origins, 1609-1862
The first football clubs were established in Sheffield in 1857, and soon they had enough to establish their own Football Association in 1867. Sheffield FA played London FA in 1861, one of the first regional matches. and eventually the need for a unified set of rules became obvious. This, prompted by many letters to the editors of the newspapers in the midlands, near-north and London regions of England, and led to a series of meetings which culminated in the formation of the Football Association (FA) in 1863. This group attempted to establish a series of rules which would please everyone, but they couldn't resolve issues such as use of hands, allowing hacking of opponents, etc. Many supporters of these elements (considered more "manly") eventually withdrew and formed the Rugby Football Union, and the FA established rules more similar to the modern game. The next major development was the establishment of a knock-out cup in 1871, based on the house competitions at Harrow School. These knockouts, in which most teams names are placed in a hat, and drawn out in pairs, then leading to a one-game knockout competition similar to the NCAA Championships, which culminates in a Cup trophy.

History of Soccer The earliest evidence of soccer dates from about 200 in China, where a form of the game was played that emphasized the ability of players to dribble a leather ball. The Greeks and Romans also participated in a variation of soccer that permitted ball carrying.

05/31/2002 - Updated 04:06 PM ET World Cup and U.S. soccer history: 1930-1938 Timeline World Cup (Uruguay): In the final, 80,000 fans watched host country Uruguay erase a 2-1 halftime deficit to beat rival Argentina 4-2. In the United States: The U.S. team supposedly consisted of British ringers, though that claim is disputed . And the U.S. is by no means a soccer backwater at this time, with a national team that dates back to 1916. Local leagues abound, most notably the professional St. Louis Soccer League, and the U.S. Open Cup has been existence since 1914. World Cup (Italy): Thirty-two teams took part, but it was a brief trip for many. First, the field was cut in half with a qualifying round.

05/31/2002 - Updated 04:06 PM ET World Cup and U.S. soccer history: 1974-1986 Timeline World Cup (West Germany): Another win for the host nation, as West Germany beat the brilliant Netherlands side 2-1 in the final. Haiti, Australia and Zaire all reached the 16-team field, with little success other than Australia's scoreless tie with Chile. East Germany stunned West Germany in a meaningless game that nevertheless didn't sit well with the home fans. All was forgiven after the final. The format departed from that of the five previous competitions (and the current setup). After the first group stage narrowed the field to eight, the teams were again split into round-robin groups. West Germany and the Netherlands made convincing runs through their groups to play for the title, while runners-up Brazil and Poland played for third place. In the United States: Professional soccer continues to grow, with several of the NASL's 15 teams averaging more than 10,000 fans, but the national team struggles. After a handful of wins in 1973, the team embarks on a 15-game winless streak.

Links US SOCCER HISTORY TIMELINE The following is a brief chronology of United States soccer history from 1620 to 1999, produced by the late US Soccer historian S. T. N. "Sam" Foulds. American folklore asserts that Pilgrim Fathers, upon settling at Plymouth Rock, found American Indians along the Massachusetts coast playing a form of football. The Indians called it pasuckquakkohwog , which means "they gather to play ball with the foot." Many American colleges played football, but there was no intercollegiate competition. Rules were casual and often changed. The Oneidas of Boston, the first organized football (soccer) club in America, was formed by Gerritt Smith Miller. The Oneidas played under the experimental rules of Association Football and were undefeated from 1862-65. Princeton University and Rutgers University engaged in the first intercollegiate soccer match Nov. 6 in New Brunswick, N.J. Rutgers won the match 6-4. The game was more similar to soccer than American football.

New Zealand Soccer News, photos Rangers results, reports BOP results, tables Kingz, NSL table ... Contact us New Zealand soccer is based on a large number of juniors playing (120000), with higher numbers than even our 'national sport' rugby. However with the small population base (N.Z. 3.8 million) the senior sides struggle, at times, to foot it with many other countries. Womens and girls soccer has grown rapidly over the last few years and is developing good quality.
At present soccer is on a high in New Zealand. We look forward to our second Confederations Cup as Oceania champions. In November 1999, N.Z. hosted the Under 17 World Champs, gaining better than expected public interest and crowd support. N.Z.'s first full time professional side, the Football Kingz are playing their fourth season in the Australian domestic competition (NSL). FIFA have approved this for four years, at this stage. The first coach of the Kings was N.Z.'s best known player Wynton Rufer, who made his name playing for Werder Bremen. The Kingz finished 8th (out of 16) in the NSL in their first two seasons.
    Highlights:

1982 After the longest road of any team, N.Z. got to the World Cup finals in Spain... Scoring twice against Scotland

Through its first eight seasons of intercollegiate play, the South Alabama Jaguar women's soccer program has distinguished itself as one of the more consistent clubs in the South. Today, USA continues to add to its tradition as it concentrates on conference championships and turns its focus to NCAA Tournaments. After playing as an independent for four of its first six years, South Alabama found a new home in 2000, one that was familiar to the Jaguar family, as the Sun Belt Conference began sponsoring women's soccer as a championship sport. And it looks to emerge to greater heights with an automatic bid to the NCAAs awaiting its tournament winner. The nine-team league includes Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, Florida International, Denver, Louisiana-Lafayette, North Texas, Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky. Florida International won the inaugural championship by defeating North Texas, and Denver toppled North Texas to claim the second annual award. The tournament championships return to Mobile this fall.

But history books make record of a sports game similar to that of modern football. The History of the Three Kingdom Period (BC 57 ~ AD 935) mention an incident that in Shilla Dynasty, a ball-game similar to football named "chuk-kook" had existed. It was in the year 1882 that the modern game of football that originated in England arrived in Korea. The sailors on the British carrier Flying Fish left a football at the piers of Jemulpo, Incheon.
The game began to be taught systematically in the country when football was adopted as a class subject at the royal foreign language school in 1904. The first public football match was held in the country when Hwangseong YMCA and Korea Sports Club played two matches at an army training yard in an area now known as Samseongyo in Seoul.

The initial push was to get team information compiled, which has been done except for completion of the 'Tornado' information. Next up is the addition of areas that will highlight the Players who have come out of the Twin Cities area, and made an impact both on the team and the community. This is one area I could use plenty of help. If anyone is willing to write biographies on players, I would very much appreciate it.
