Mondays, 12:00-2:50 Course Objectives: In this course, we will engage with some of the large theoretical debates in the study of social movements, reading both empirical treatments of particular movements and theoretical treatments of key issues. We will be particularly concerned with the social and political context of protest, focusing on basic questions, such as: under what circumstances do social movements emerge? how do dissidents choose political tactics and strategies?; and, how do movements affect social and political change? By the end of the quarter, students should have sufficient mastery of the theoretical literature to ground their own research. Short papers 40%

This site provides a space for the study of social movements in the U.S., including those movements as linked to transnational and global movements. Our emphasis is on recent and contemporary movements, but we also aim to provide materials on earlier movements. We seek to bring together the best insights of sociology, political science, anthropology, history, cultural studies, American studies, ethnic studies, women's studies, and other fields of social movement analysis, as well as the insights of movement activists inside and outside of academia. The site currently consists of links to on-line articles, bibliographies, course syllabi, conferences, a glossary of terms for movement analysis, and sets of links to historically-oriented and contemporary sites categorized by movement type. A listserv on social movement cultures, as well as other interactive elements are planned for the future. We hope the site will prove useful to a variety of scholars, activists, and activist-scholars.

THEORIES OF SOCIAL MOVEMENTS AND THEIR CURRENT DEVELOPMENT IN SOVIET SOCIETY
Sergey Mamay
Part 1. Theories of social movements
Theories of social movements are closely connected with the general problems of society's development. To analyse social movements separately, in abstraction from the social structure, is to limit the problem by superficial analysis, which is not fruitful and does not allow us to understand the nature of social movements. For that reason all the serious theories of social movements are based on general approaches to the principles of society's development. The question of classification of the theories of social movements is complicated, as there are many points of view on this question. We consider that four main approaches can be distinguished and that these four approaches are:
  • 1. `collective behaviour' theory,
  • 2. `resource mobilisation' theory,
  • 3. `new social movements' interpretations,
  • 4. `the action-identity' approach. Let us first consider briefly the characteristic of these four approaches. `Collective behaviour' accounts are still recognised as an orthodoxy in studies of social movements. Among the followers of this approach we can name such Chicago school sociologists as Ralph Turner and Lewis Killian; Talcott Parsons and his structural functionalism, and Neil Smelser in whose

There have always been common issues between the left in Quebec and the left in English Canada, but that commonality ended when we arrived at electoral politics. Most of the left in Quebec supported the Parti Quebecois, and in English Canada the left was divided between those who supported the New Democratic Party and those who turned their back on electoral politics. The national question has always been a dividing point. When sovereignty was a central political issue for the Quebec left, there was little common ground. During the era of Rene Levesque, the left in English Canada, with the notable exception of the NDP, supported Quebec's right to self-determination. But as the PQ moved to the right and Quebec supported Mulroney and free trade, hostility towards Quebec nationalism in English Canada, including on the left deepened the divide. We still worked together - against the Free Trade Agreement, on the World March of Women and on the Quebec Summit - but tensions were pretty high. Now I sense a new opportunity to bridge the divide.
