What santos are, how they are made, and the importance of their stories can be also discovered. Living santero s from both the New Mexican and Puerto Rican traditions are featured and speak about their work as santero s and the importance of these objects to their cultures. An exercise on iconography enables students to understand the importance of symbols in this tradition. The process addressed is that used by a conservator as he/she learns about an object in order to care for it properly and preserve it. Conservators need to know as much as possible about how something was made, what it was made of, why it was made, and who made it. To learn this information, they often consult historians, artists, and other experts. They follow the scientific process as they form hypotheses and consult various sources of evidence to confirm or disprove their hypotheses.
