Frequently Asked Questions
Q
Are all songwriters, composers and performing songwriters needs and ambitions the same?
A The answer is, basically, yes. They are all looking for recognised success of their talent, publication of their songs and instrumental themes, and to receive money earned as royalties from the exploitation of their songwriting, composing and performances. The main difference is that songwriters and composers are seeking publishing deals, to have artistes record their songs and to see any instrumental themes succeed in television programmes and advertising, whereas performing songwriters are not only seeking publishing deals but also management deals and record deals.
Q Are there many cases of song theft in the music business?

Q
If I only write music or I only write lyrics, what can I do to get my songs finished and suitable for publishing? A There are ways of solving this problem. The Guild operates a register of collaborators, some are melody writers and some are lyric writers. Collaboration is a proven method for most writers who require a partner to do what they cannot do themselves. Most songwriters and composers know of successful collaboration partnerships, such as John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Elton John and Bernie Taupin, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd-Webber, to name just a few. There are also occasions when artistes themselves collaborate with songwriters. Publishers also sometimes put songwriting teams together. In most cases, however, publishing companies require complete songs and will only take lyrics alone under exceptional circumstances. Members of the Guild can use the Collaboration Service, which is free of charge.

Though his focus is on songwriting, he qualifies as a sophisticated lyrics, finelycrafted tales a talented storyteller. performing Songwriter had this to say
http://www.davidharris.com/bio.htm
Singer Songwriter David Harris is currently on tour! With the release of his seventh recording, Moonlit . David continues more than a decade of concert touring at colleges and clubs across America. David Harris writes wonderful songs! He is a masterful storyteller, with a great passion for songwriting. He weaves prose and poetry into compelling tales. Artful, thoughtful, sometimes amusing, and always heartfelt, David creates vivid portraits of people's lives and dreams in song. Whether he is writing about romance or politics, the society or the environment, spirituality or modern wants, he captures images and ideas which evoke in us a sense of "listening" to a great book. Musically, he has forged a compelling style of guitar playing in which he utilizes altered and open tunings to create rich, mystic harmonies. A new generation of technology allows David to change keys, guitar sounds, and even tunings, during songs!, creating a rare and impressively original style of playing. His voice is warm and intimate, yet powerful. Critics have hailed David Harris' work. Bam Magazine, Music Connection, and The Victory Review say: "Songwriting and performing talent at this level should not be overlooked ... Harris' vocals are, rich, emotional, and convincing ... His songs always contain sophistication and subtlety." "Harris showed an impeccably fluid style. Though his focus is on songwriting, he qualifies as a solid guitarist as well..."

Then Maurice, this ex-marine/ex-astronaut, tells Chris that Maggie’s house has burned to the ground and he remembers Picaso’s famous statement "every act of destruction is an act of creation". He goes to charred house and finds a burned upright piano. He decides to fling the piano. In one of the most beautiful monologues ever Chris stands before his giant catapult, talks about the groping we all experience when we’re going for that perfect expression of our feelings. Then he pulls out a sword and quotes the end of Portrait of the Artist As A Young Man saying— "Welcome, O life! I go to encounter for the millionth time the reality of experience and to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race." Then he says something just as cool. He tells everyone that he learned a lot of things on his journey toward this moment and this is key— "It’s not the thing you fling, it’s the fling itself." Then the burnt piano is sent flying into the air. It was one of the most beautiful expressions of art I have ever seen.

For the past several months, I have had a survey up on my main songwriting tips page with some basic questions on your experience, preferences, goals and others. The survey brought some surprising results, at least to me! What I want to do here is go through the questions and responses and evaluate them! The company that provided the poll changed around and as a result, the poll is no longer valid. However, I'll be creating new polls in future so stay tuned! As for the results I received from the last one, here are the results: Most of you who responded write both lyrics and music (67%), more write just lyrics (25%) than just music (8%). This was a newer question on the survey and therefore has fewer responses than some of the others, but seems to confirm my suspicion that MOST songwriters aim to do both.

As many readers of InFolkus will know, the Songwriting Event is held as part of the Victor Harbor Folk Festival, and has been held in one form or another since the first State Folk Festival in 1979. In the lead up to the Event I have spent some time over the past couple of months exploring resources for songwriters on the internet, and have been surprised and delighted by many of the things I have found. As mentioned in last months column, our very own local SCALA ) has been online since 1995. In the archive of articles on the site you can find items discussing various aspects of songwriting including "How to write a song" by Bob Petchell; ideas for avoiding cliches and obvious rhymes, and an interesting look at the use of the ‘bridge’ in songwriting - both by Rob Childs. If you don’t know what a ‘bridge’ is when used in a song, then Robs article is a good starting point. The SCALA site has numerous other items of interest to songwriters and is a great place from which to start your research into the art of songwriting. The ISA, or the

Jenn, I first encountered your artistry through another fine antifolkster who also traveled many miles to NYC...Casey Holford. Are you two strictly songwriting/performing partners? Can we look forward to more collective works from you both?
A. Casey Holford and I haven't yet written anything together, but we've been able to apply our strengths to each others' music-his instrumental intuition adds a ton to songs of mine, "I Am Not Going Home Yet," "Red Shirt," and
"Sidewalk Song;" and I sing backup on two of his songs that will be released on his new album "Bad Spell, Good Spell." Overall Casey's idiosyncratic brand of songwriting has compelled me to push myself further as an iinstrumentalist and as a craftsperson of rich songs. But our writing styles are HUGELY disparate. That said, I do hope that we'll keep collaborating and performing together for years to come, because we have a rich creative
relationship. He's awesome.

It's not something I particularly want to encourage, as you'll no doubt have figured out by now, but hit songs are a necessity if you want to make a career out of your music. Be it as a performer or for selling your songs. I may have mentioned before that the industry is money-driven . . . What a revelation! I'm sure you would never have guessed it for yourselves . . . The industry makes money by selling records. Records are sold to the general public on the basis of hit songs. No hits, no sales. Generally. Please don't write back stating that such and such artists have made a decent living without ever having a hit song. I know this, but that's beside the point. Mike Oldfield and the others you could name generally started their careers in the 70's when record companies were not as big as they now are and where originality was a factor. And they are really exceptions.

Laura has been involved in music in many capacities since her childhood. She wrote her first "real" song at 13 a year after she picked up the guitar and has been writing constantly ever since. Laura has a B.A. in Music (classical guitar with a touch of electronic composition)from St. Mary's College of MD. By day she teaches elementary school band at 7 schools. Laura's classical training combine with her stubborness to reject that training and make for a solid vocalist and guitarist. Add passionate, well thought out lyrics and she comes at you as the type of performer that you can't get out of your head. In addition to the obsessive songwriting passion,Laura likes photography, painting, autumn, fireworks, cold weather, flannel shirts and mint choclate chip ice cream, and aztec mochas.
