Sore Throat
There are many different causes for sore throats. Some causes are easily treated, some require antibiotics, and some cannot be treated at all you just have to wait out the cause, although over-the-counter medicines can help relieve the pain.
Sore Throat Due to Dry Air
This is actually quite common I get them a lot myself in the winter, especially in cold weather when I forget to fill up the humidifier tanks with water. If the air is dry, your throat can dry out a bit with your breathing and become sore. Solution: drink plenty of fluids and make sure your house is humidified properly. (I have noticed that furnace humidifiers do not necessarily do a good enough job of keeping the house properly humid. Even with a furnace humidifier you may still need table-top humidifers to stay comfortable.)
Sore Throat Due to Coughs, Colds, and Runny Noses
Coughing by itself can make your throat feel sore. So can postnasal drip mucus from the nose dripping down the back of the throat. If you have a dry cough, cough suppressants some of which you can buy without a prescription can quieten the cough and cut down on throat irritation. If you are coughing because of postnasal drip, I believe you should

Sore Throat
Easing the Pain of a Sore Throat AAFP catalog What causes sore throats? Sore throats can be caused by many things. Viruses (like those that cause colds) can lead to a sore throat. Bacteria can also cause a sore throat, as can smoking, breathing polluted air, drinking alcohol, and hay fever and other allergies. What is tonsillitis? Tonsillitis means swelling of the tonsils (at the back of your mouth on each side of your throat). It can cause a sore throat and other symptoms. Signs of strep throat and tonsillitis are often alike (see the box below). Tonsillitis is usually caused by a bacteria, though sometimes a virus may be involved. Symptoms of tonsillitis or strep throat
  • Sore throat Fever Headache Vomiting White patches in your throat or on your tonsils Pain when you swallow Swollen, red tonsils Sore glands in your jaw and throat
If I have tonsillitis, will I need a tonsillectomy? Tonsillectomy is a surgery used to remove tonsils. Most people who have tonsillitis don't need a tonsillectomy. You might need a tonsillectomy if you get severe tonsillitis a lot or if your tonsils are too large and cause problems with your breathing. Your doctor can tell you if a tonsillectomy is needed. What is strep throat?

3.12 Pharyngitis (Sore Throat)
Presentation
The patient with a bacterial pharyngitis complains of a rapid onset of throat pain worsened by swallowing. There is usually a fever, pharyngeal erythema, and a purulent, patchy, yellow, gray or white exudate, tender cervical adenopathy, headache and absence of cough. Viral infections are typically accompanied by conjunctivitis, nasal congestion, hoarseness, cough, aphthous ulcers on the soft palate and myalgias. It is helpful to differentiate pain on swallowing (odynophagia) from difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), the latter being more likely caused by obstruction or abnormal muscular movement.
What to do:
  • First examine the ears, nose, and mouth, which are, after all, connected to the pharynx, and often contain clues to the diagnosis.
  • Depress the tongue with a blade, have the patient raise his soft palate by saying " ah," inspect the posterior pharynx, and swab both tonsillar pillars for a culture. (You can decide later whether you really need to plant the culture. Rapid strep tests may provide results in a few minutes, while cultures may take 1-2 days to incubate and interpret. This delay does not alter the effectiveness of therapy, however. Treatment may begin up to nine days after symptoms and still prevent rheumatic fever.)
  • When the infection is not clearly bacterial or you are unsure about the need for an antibiotic (or you or the patient "need to know" if this is a strep infection) then you may obtain a rapid strep test. If the rapid strep test is positive, then treat with antibiotics as above. If the test is negative or unavailable and you have a high clinical suspicion that this is a viral pharyngitis, provide symptomatic treatment (below), send a culture, and hold antibiotics pending results.

Strep Throat Infection
DESCRIPTION (Diagnosis must be confirmed by a physician.)
Your child has a strep throat infection. It has been diagnosed with a throat culture or rapid strep test. The treatment of strep throat can prevent some rare but serious complications: namely, rheumatic fever (a disease that affects the heart) or glomerulonephritis (a disease that affects the kidneys). In addition, with treatment the fever and much of the sore throat are usually gone within 24 hours.
HOME TREATMENT
  • Antibiotics Your child needs the antibiotic prescribed by your physician. Try not to forget any of the doses. If your child goes to school or a baby sitter, arrange for someone to give the midafternoon dose. If the medicine is a liquid, store the antibiotic in the refrigerator and use a measuring spoon to be sure that you give the right amount. Your child should take the medicine until all the pills are gone or the bottle is empty. Even though your child will feel better in a few days, give the antibiotic for 10 days to keep the strep throat from flaring up again. A long-acting penicillin (Bicillin) injection can be given if your child will not take oral medicines or if it will be impossible for you to give the medicine regularly. (Note: If given correctly, the oral antibiotic works just as rapidly and effectively as a shot.)

    Sore Throats
A sore throat may often be the first symptom of a cold or 'flu , but sometimes comes on in its own right. Most frequently, the cause is a virus, but in a sizeable minority of cases, the cause is bacterial.
    Symptoms
Often a sore throat is associated with enlarged, tender glands in the neck, and this need not cause concern. They signify the body's defensive response to attacking infection, and subside after the infection has gone. Other symptoms may be headache and fever . There is often some sensation of neck stiffness associated with the glands in the neck, but if this is a prominent feature , then you should consult a doctor in order to rule out meningitis
    Causes
Most commonly sore throats are caused by viruses eg adenoviruses, influenza , and sometimes glandular fever (infectious mononucleosis). Many other viruses may cause sore throats as well as bacteria eg streptococcus. There are other causes of sore throat, including thrush (candida), which is sometimes a complication of treatment with antibiotics or steroids, and also other, rarer problems. If your sore throat continues for more than a week, or you have any other reason for particular concern, then it is wise to contact your doctor for advice.

Sore Throat What causes a sore throat? What is strep throat? What tests are used to find the cause of my sore throat?
If you have signs of strep throat, such as fever, headache or white patches in your throat, your doctor will probably want to give you a strep test. He or she may do a rapid strep test, a throat culture or both. If your doctor thinks you have a viral infection such as infectious mononucleosis (mono), he or she will probably do a blood test. What is the treatment for a sore throat caused by bacteria? What is the treatment for a sore throat caused by viruses? If a sore throat is a symptom of hay fever or another allergy, your doctor can help you figure out how to avoid the things that trigger your allergies. Or you may need to take medicine for your allergies. How can I feel better? Some of the hints listed here may help ease the pain of a sore throat:
    • Take acetaminophen, ibuprofen or naproxen.
    • Gargle with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt per glass of water).
    • Suck on throat lozenges or hard candy.

    Sore Throat
When your throat is red and sore, there are ways to help relieve pain quickly. While few sore throats are serious, you should also know when your sore throat means you should call your doctor. Then you'll be able to use self-care with confidence.
    Facts About Sore Throats
When your throat hurts, it's a sign your body is fighting off "invaders" such as germs or allergens (substances to which you're allergic). Other symptoms that often go along with sore throats are hoarseness and swollen lymph nodes in your neck. Sore throats can be caused by strep, colds, flu, other infections such as mononucleosis, allergies, cigarette smoke, or straining the voice (such as shouting at a football game).
    Self-Care
For most sore throats, your self-care goal is to feel less pain and to avoid substances which might be causing the condition. If your throat is sore, stop smoking at least until the redness and pain disappear. Drink plenty of liquids: at least 6 glasses per day. Gargling with warm salt water every hour or two offers temporary relief. Sucking on cough drops or lozenges, or taking aspirin or aspirin substitutes will lessen pain from a sore throat. If allergies are causing your sore throat, an antihistamine will stop irritating mucus from dripping. If possible, stay in environments where the allergen is filtered out.

    Soothe a sore throat
A sore throat can really get you down, so here are a few things you can use to take away the suffering. Believe it or not vinegar can ease the pain. Any type will do but wine vinegar or cider vinegar may taste better. Put a teaspoon of vinegar in a glass of water. Gargle, then swallow. Do this 3 times a day until things are on the mend.
If you do not fancy vinegar then you can try salt. Mind this may taste worse than the vinegar. Well if you are suffering then you will try anything right. Put some warm water in a glass and mix with some salt. Put in your mouth and gargle and spit out! Don't swallow!!! This should get rid of the soreness!
So I have still not convinced you. Well 'Nuts'! Honestly nuts will soothe a sore throat was well. Take a few almonds and mix them with a couple of teaspoons of honey. Sit down and eat away. This will give the pain of a sore throat nothing to moan about. Honey is a natural pain killer, so are almonds. The almonds will also help to relieve the inflammation.

Virtually every child and adult gets a sore throat once or twice a year. What should you do when this happens? Could it be strep throat? How can you tell? Should you go to the doctor? Should you just call your doctor and ask for medicine over the phone? Here is the Dr. Sears guide to diagnosing and treating sore throats in children.
    CAUSES OF SORE THROAT
    • Viruses. By far, the most common cause of sore throat is any one of a large number of viruses, none of which are treatable with antibiotics. These viruses can cause high fever and very painful sore throat. They can feel just as bad or worse as strep throat.
    • Colds and coughs. The common cold virus can cause a sore throat in addition to its many other symptoms. Coughing can also irritate the throat, and so can post-nasal drip from a cold.
    • Strep throat. This is caused by the strep bacteria, and is treated with antibiotics.
    • Coxsackie virus (hand, foot, and mouth disease). This is a virus that causes high fever and painful canker sores on the throat, cheeks, gums, or lips. Click on mouth sores for more info on this.

    What is a sore throat?
A sore throat (also known as pharyngitis or tonsillitis ) is a disease primarily located in the area around the tonsils. It can be caused by both a virus and a bacteria. A sore throat is partly a disease in itself and partly an effect of other diseases such as flu and glandular fever
The disease is normally seen in children and young people but it can occur at any age. The characteristics of the disease are throat pain and trouble swallowing. If the disease is due to bacteria it can be treated with antibiotics. Usually there are no complications.

Casano, M.D., (601) 932-5244 Jackson, MS What Causes a Sore Throat? Sore throat is a symptom of many medical disorders. Infections cause the majority of sore throats and are contagious. Infections are caused either by viruses such as the flu, the common cold, mononucleosis, or by bacteria such as strep, mycoplasma, or hemophilus. While bacteria respond to antibiotic treatment, viruses do not. Viruses: Most viral sore throats accompany flu or colds along with a stuffy, runny nose, sneezing, and generalized aches and pains. These viruses are highly contagious and spread quickly, especially in winter. The body builds antibodies that destroy the virus, a process that takes about a week. Sore throats accompany other viral infections such as measles, chicken pox, whooping cough, and croup. Canker sores and fever blisters in the throat also can be very painful. One viral infection takes much longer than a week to be cured: infectious mononucleosis, or "mono." This virus lodges in the lymph system, causing massive enlargement of the tonsils, with white patches on their surface and swollen glands in the neck, armpits, and groin. It creates a severely sore throat and, sometimes, serious breathing difficulties. It can affect the liver, leading to jaundice— yellow skin and eyes. It also causes extreme fatigue that can last six weeks or more.

General Welcome/Mission Health Centers Services Departments ... Links/Resources The warm, mucous membrane lining of the throat provides a suitable environment for invading viruses and bacteria to flourish. These organisms cause irritation and inflammation of the membrane, making the throat feel scratchy and sore. Throat inflammation due to a cold will usually diminish in 2-3 days, as the body begins to conquer the infection. In the meantime, there are some home remedies that can bring temporary relief to the throat.
    Natural treatment and comfort measures
GARGLE WITH WARM SALT WATER – It helps soothe the throat and reduces swelling in the tissues. This is the safest, least expensive, and probably the more effective treatment of a sore throat. Mix a tea-spoon of salt to an 8-oz. glass of warm water. Gargle every 3-4 hours. Contrary to popular belief, gargling with aspirin dissolved in warm water is not advisable as it may cause further irritation to the membrane. You need to swallow aspirin for the body to absorb it as a pain reliever.
SIPPING WARM LIQUIDS like hot tea or soup can be soothing to the tissues of the throat and help with healing by drawing circulation to the tissues.
