What Causes a Sore Throat? Sore throat is a symptom of many medical disorders. Infections cause the majority of sore throats and are contagious. Infections are caused either by viruses such as the flu, the common cold, mononucleosis, or by bacteria such as strep, mycoplasma, or hemophilus. While bacteria respond to antibiotic treatment, viruses do not. Viruses: Most viral sore throats accompany flu or colds along with a stuffy, runny nose, sneezing, and generalized aches and pains. These viruses are highly contagious and spread quickly, especially in winter. The body builds antibodies that destroy the virus, a process that takes about a week. Sore throats accompany other viral infections such as measles, chicken pox, whooping cough, and croup. Canker sores and fever blisters in the throat also can be very painful. One viral infection takes much longer than a week to be cured: infectious mononucleosis, or "mono." This virus lodges in the lymph system, causing massive enlargement of the tonsils, with white patches on their surface and swollen glands in the neck, armpits, and groin. It creates a severely sore throat and, sometimes, serious breathing difficulties. It can affect the liver, leading to jaundice— yellow skin and eyes. It also causes extreme fatigue that can last six weeks or more. "Mono," a severe illness in teenagers but less severe in children, can he transmitted by saliva. So it has been nicknamed the "kissing disease," but it can also be transmitted from mouth-to-hand to hand-to-mouth or by sharing of towels and eating utensils.

A Homeopathic Perspective on Sore Throat
(Excepted from Homeopathic Medicine for Children and Infants, Tarcher/Putnam) REMEDIES LISTED IN CAPITOL LETTERS REPRESENT MORE FREQUENTLY INDICATED REMEDIES Homeopathic medicines are often effective in treating the acute symptoms of a sore throat, though professional constitutional care is usually necessary to cure chronically recurring sore throats. Children with much pain from a sore throat or those who have difficulty opening their mouth or swallowing should receive a culture to determine if they have strep. ACONITUM: Consider this medicine during the initial onset of the sore throat. The symptoms come on suddenly, often after exposure to a cold air. There may be some burning in the throat and a red, dry, swollen throat. APIS: These children have a red, inflamed throat with swollen tonsils, which is aggravated by warm drinks or food and relieved by cold drinks or sucking on an ice cube. This remedy should be considered when the throat hurts even when the child isn't swallowing. The throat not only looks red, it looks shiny. There is dryness in the throat with a burning, stinging pain. They have constrictive feeling in the throat. The inner and outer throat is swollen, and the uvula which hangs from the upper throat is also swollen. These children may have a sensation of a fishbone caught in the throat and may have difficulty swallowing. They may experience hoarseness in the mornings and cannot stand to have anything around their neck.

Definition
Sore throat, also called pharyngitis, is a painful inflammation of the mucous membranes lining the pharynx. It is a symptom of many conditions, but most often is associated with colds or influenza . Sore throat may be caused by either viral or bacterial infections or environmental conditions. Most sore throats heal without complications, but they should not be ignored because some develop into serious illnesses. Description
Almost everyone gets a sore throat at one time or another, although children in child care or grade school have them more often than adolescents and adults. Sore throats are most common during the winter months when upper respiratory infections (colds) are more frequent. Sore throats can be either acute or chronic. Acute sore throats are the more common. They appear suddenly and last from three to about seven days. A chronic sore throat lasts much longer and is a symptom of an unresolved underlying condition or disease, such as a sinus infection.
Sore throats have many different causes, and may or may not be accompanied by cold symptoms

Sore Throat:
Sore throats are a common problem in pediatrics. Everyone has had them, and everyone knows how frustrating and uncomfortable they can be. Most sore throats are caused by a viral infection. These are commonly associated with colds, and do not respond to antibiotic treatment. A few, however, are caused by a bacterial infection called Streptococcus. This type of infection does respond to antibiotics, and should be treated. For this reason, your physician may choose to do a throat culture on your child. If the test is positive, indicating Streptococcus, your physician will prescribe a course of antibiotic treatment. It is important that you finish all of the antibiotic.

HOMOEOPATHY FOR SORE THROAT - PHARYNGITIS The throat is in constant use, carrying food to the digestive tract and air to the lungs, making it possible for us to speak. Nowadays, there is a rise in the number of cases of sore throats, and it has almost become a household problem, making the patients affected by it miserable sufferers. In this article, we will see how Homoeopathy may help these sufferers to conquer their problem in a safe and permanent manner.
p haryngitis is an inflammation of the pharynx. The pharynx is commonly referred to as the throat. it lies at the back of the mouth and extends a little way down inside the neck. It is shaped very roughly like an inverted cone, connecting the back of the nose with the back of the mouth into the larynx or the voice-box and the oesophagus. It acts as the vital link between the nose, mouth and voice-box and hence plays a central role in the essential jobs of breathing, eating and speaking. Incidence
Cause
The majority of sore throats are caused by an infection, either a viral or a bacterial infection. These are usually "caught" from the air.

Sore throat
Definition: A "sore" throat is discomfort, pain, or scratchiness in the throat. Often there is pain with swallowing as well.
Alternative Names: Throat - sore; Burning in the throat; Pain - throat
Considerations: Sore throats are common, especially in children between the ages of 5 and 10. For most children, removing the tonsils would not prevent future sore throats. Therefore, tonsillectomy surgery is performed less commonly than in the past.
Sore throats are most often caused by an infection. The vast majority are caused by viruses and will NOT respond to antibiotics. Strep throat is the most common bacterial cause of sore throat. Because strep throat can occasionally lead to rheumatic fever , antibiotics are given. Strep throat often includes a fever (greater than 101 degrees Fahrenheit), white draining patches on the throat, and swollen or tender lymph glands in the neck, along with headache and stomach pain in children. A sore throat is less likely to be strep throat if it is a minor part of a typical cold (with runny nose , stuffy ears, cough , and similar symptoms). Since it is clinically difficult to distinguish strep throat from viral sore throat, laboratory tests are often used.

LENEXA, Kan., Dec. 15, 1998 Take it from a sore throat lozenge maker, there are times when you need more than relief of symptoms, such as the one case in four when a sore throat may be caused by strep bacteria. "A strep throat usually comes on more quickly and the symptoms are more severe than in the garden variety sore throat," says Borchers, whose company manufacturers Cough-X(R) lozenges, which are good for either type of sore throat. "Also, in the case of strep, lymph nodes in the neck, below the ears, and under the jaw may be significantly enlarged and tender to the touch. There may also be a white or yellow coating at the back of the throat and a fever of 101 degrees or higher." The best course of action if you suspect strep is to see your doctor for a throat culture. Strep is usually treated with antibiotics. If the throat culture turns up no bacteria, you probably have a viral sore throat, and treatment can be limited to relieving symptoms. For pain, gargle with a weak salt-water solution and suck on lozenges such as Cough-X that contain a topical anesthetic.

I only had sore throat but allergy caused this... Mother of three lands in hospital burns unit for 17 days after reacting to medicine By Michael Lee
YOU have a sore throat and a few pimples, so you go to a doctor. You are given some common medicines. Suddenly, you get blisters so bad, it's like half your body has been burnt. That is the unusual ordeal that Madam Norhayati Khalid has just been through. She suffered from an allergic reaction to her medication, which left her barely conscious and in severe pain. It could also have killed her. On Dec 14, the 32-year-old security officer was admitted to hospital. Her body was 'burnt' with blisters from the waist up. The medicines had apparently triggered a rare drug allergy called Stevens-Johnson syndrome. (See report below.) She was so badly affected that she had to spend more than two weeks at the burns unit of the Singapore General Hospital (SGH). And, though much better now, she says she still looks like she has been 'stung by a nest of hornets'. Her problems started with a routine visit to the Bukit Merah polyclinic for acne, sore throat and sore eyes, on Dec 10.
