BRAZIL: GEOGRAPHY
General Overview
Map of Brazil's 5 Regions Additional Maps of Brazil Topographically speaking, the landscape of Brazil is characterized by two main features. In the north lies the Amazon River with its surrounding lowland basin of 1,544,400 sq. miles (4,000,000 sq. km). The Amazon Basin forms the largest rain forest in the world. In contrast to the Amazon Basin, a large plateau called the Central Highlands rises through the South. A network of high mountains runs from the south through the Northeast, dividing the interior from the Atlantic Ocean. Another interesting feature of the land is its extensive river system.
Weather
F (19? C). Coastal cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Recife and Salvador have warm climates balanced by the constancy of the trade winds. Farther south, in cities such as Curitiba and Porto Alegre, the cooler subtropical climate resembles many areas of the U.S. and Europe, with winter temperatures often falling below freezing. Despite its reputation for blistering heat, the Amazon region rarely experiences temperatures above 90? F (32? C). The hottest part of Brazil is in the northeast where, in the dry season between May and November, temperatures above 100? F (38? C) are recorded frequently. The seasons in Brazil are the reverse of those in the U.S. and Europe:

Further to the north, Cordillera Septentrional stretches along the Atlantic coast from Monte Cristi near the Haitian border to San Francisco de Macorís. This mountain range divides the Atlantic coast and the fertile Cibao valley which contains the gold mines that formerly brought Christopher Columbus and the Spaniards rushing back to the island after their initial "discovery" of America. Tourists in the north (Puerto Plata region) should not miss an exploratory day-trip into the magical valleys of Cordillera Septentrional, especially around Jarabacoa, a region called locally the "Dominican Alps.
The Cordillera Oriental, on the east, is the smallest of the three main mountain ranges. Two more mountain ranges are Neiba Sierra and Sierra de Bahoruco both in the southwest of the country. These ranges partially surround the unusual inland saltwater Lake Enriquillo, the lowest point in the Caribbean at 27 meters below sea level.

Journalists' Guide to Remote Sensing Resources
Summary: Journalists' Guide to Remote Sensing Sources is a directory of WWW resources for remote sensing, designed to aid professionals who are seeking information in the field. The site is division of the American University Academic Web Server. Below the world map within the main page are eleven major links. In all cases, users will find a non-alphabetical listing of remote sensing sources, each noted with a brief description and its title. The title, in turn, provides direct access to the source's WWW site. "Recommended Sites" includes mapping, satellite images, and government data centers. "Image Indexes, Browsers, and Data Sets" offers a compilation of browsers, databases, data centers, and remote sensing tools. Major topic divisions within this area are: (1) European Space Agency (ESA); (2) CIESEN; (3) NASA; (4) print guides; and (5) other indexes. "Earth Imagery Resources Arranged by Country" allows a user to select a nation from an alphabetical listing; this choice then reveals a list of sources for that particular region. "U.S. Government Earth Sensing Programs" offers a directory to American sources. "Maps and Mapping" reveals detailed information on maps, map viewers, and general GIS information. "Weather Related Resources," "FAQ's, Listservs, and News Groups," as well as "Business and Enterprises" all feature a listing of resources, in which titles provide access to the resources' WWW sites. "Universities and Think Tanks" details remote sensing projects sponsored by universities and think tanks. "Professional Organizations and Congresses" details weather, engineering, and nonprofit organizations. Finally, "Allied Fields" features sites related to remote sensing .

Ecuador also owns the famous Galapagos Islands, located approximately 1,000 kilometers off the coast. Ecuador covers 256,370 square kilometers of land and is the smallest country in South America after Uruguay and the Guianas. Ecuador, South America's second smallest nation, boasts unmatched geographic diversity. Geography Despite Ecuador's diminutive size - about equal to the North American state of Colorado - it is one of the most geographically diverse countries in the world. Ecuador is comprised of four distinct geographical regions: El Oriente (Amazon jungle) in the east, La Sierra (Andes mountains) in the center, La Costa (the Pacific coastal lowlands) in the west, and the majestic Galapagos Islands off the coast.
