Pan-African Studies Liaison: David Horvath ( david.horvath@louisville.edu Date: September, 2002 I. Program Description and Purpose of Collection: The Pan-African Studies (PAS) Department offers a united, cross-cultural and humanistic approach to the examination of people of Africa on the continent as well as in its Diaspora of North and South America and the Caribbean. The Department offers BA or BS degree options for its majors, as well as a minor program where students may choose to concentrate on one of three areas: African Studies; Diaspora Studies (The Caribbean, North and South America); or African American Studies (U.S.). This course of study allows students to examine the history, culture, social structure and political economy of people of African descent, as well as to examine its relationship to economic development, entrepreneurship, and public health issues, locally as well as globally. In 1999-2000 the Department hopes to offer Graduate Certificates in three variations: 1) a graduate minor with another degree; 2) a certificate for post-baccalaureate work (12 credit hours); or, 3) a certificate offered with a degree in teaching (Pan-African pedagogy). Courses in the 600 level will be offered with content in Social Sciences, Humanities and History. The department hopes for a certified Masters Degree program by 2000-2001. PAS currently has about 25 declared majors and 50 minors. Most of the PAS courses satisfy general education requirements in areas other than Natural Sciences.
