The Department of Government
The Department of Government at the University of Essex offers undergraduates a very wide range of courses relating to almost all aspects of politics in which critical questions of our modern age are examined. Since the Department is very large, there are currently some 300 undergraduates, students can select courses on a geographical basis (e.g. the politics of Britain, Europe, the United States, Latin America, and Japan) or on the basis of general intellectual interest (international relations, political theory, research methods, policy-making, and comparative politics). Students are welcome to take broad degrees, specialist degrees, or joint honours' programmes in conjunction with other disciplines. Students can arrange to take courses for a general background in politics as well as a specialised focus on a particular sub-field of the discipline. The Department is not committed to any particular view of the discipline of political science. It believes that the study of politics should be broad in scope, rigorous in approach, and open to new ideas. In fact, the Department has achieved its reputation by specialising in a wide range of different subjects and areas, and by steadily expanding its range of interests and activities. There is also a constant flow of distinguished visiting scholars from abroad.

Unfortunately, the City Orchestra was short lived and lasted for only a small period of time. Yet, its short existence led to a public acknowledgement for the need for an orchestra. Representatives from the Ministry of Education and the University of Chile worked together to help establish a publicly funded symphony. In 1930, the University of Chile in Santiago began to donate funds and helped to establish the Associacion Nacional de Conciertos (National Association of Conciertos). Out of this was born the Symphonic Orchestra of Chile. However this symphony also had difficulties surviving. With a worldwide depression, funding for the arts was difficult to come by. In result, the symphony began to host concerts at places such as public squares, cheap theaters, and public parks. Although they performed these concerts as a means to survive, public opinion on the need for a symphonic orchestra grew.
