The Cost of Study Abroad
Study abroad can be expensive, but it doesn't have to be. Depending on the the type of program and its location, you can spend approximately the same amount that you pay to attend USC or almost double.
  • The basic costs that you can expect to pay for any type of study abroad program are tuition, housing and meals. Participating in programs offered by out-of-state schools, private schools and private companies will generally increase the cost of tuition for USC students.
Additional costs may include travel to and from the site, vacation travel and expenses, commuting, personal expenses and insurance.
Extras such as internships and group excursions will raise the cost. Location is also a factor. The cost of living in Western Europe and Japan, for example, is higher than in Canada, Latin America and some parts of Asia. Cities are more expensive than small towns and rural areas.

The Local Path To Making Work Pay: Denver's Earned Income Credit Experience , March 2002 This report is the first in a series of web essays about local innovations in welfare and work. This essay describes the reasons for Denver's decision to use welfare block grant funds to create a local earned income tax credit for th city's low-income workers. It describes the: 1) reasons for Denver Mayor Webb's decision to create a local Earned Income Tax Credit; 2) specific steps the city took to create the working family credit; 3) lessons learned during the development of the new policy; and 4) implications of this experience for welfare reform reauthorization. It concludes that local leaders can creatively use flexible federal welfare funds to provide accessible support that alleviates poverty and rewards work. The author recommends that federal welfare reform reauthorization maintain flexibility and include adequate funds by adjusting block grants for inflation.

Lexington County operates under the Council/Administrator form of government implemented in January 1976 in accordance with the Home Rule Act enacted by the South Carolina General Assembly. Office hours for most departments are from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday except for holidays. Departments Animal Services:
The Lexington County department of Animal Services assumes several roles in Lexington County. Its main purpose is to prevent animal attacks and to control the numbers of stray animals, but it is also active in a number of other areas. The top priority for Animal Services is to keep the public safe from animals that harm humans. These services include controlling vicious or rabid animals that can attack adults or children.
Animal Services also picks up stray animals and enforces ordinances that require identification tags on pets. In addition, the department provides a temporary shelter for stray animals so they can be reunited with their owners or, if unclaimed, can be adopted out to new owners.
Educating the public about the County ordinances and about spaying and neutering pets is an increasingly important component of Animal Services' duties. Beginning in fall 1999, Animal Services will visit schools and talk to children about spaying and neutering their pets. Rabies clinics will also be used to teach the public about the danger of this disease and give animals vaccinations to keep rabies out of Lexington County.

This report is placed in prominent locations so that citizens of District 15 will have an opportunity to receive this current information from their State Senator, Wes Hayes. BUDGET Despite the severe shortage of available revenue, the 2002-2003 State Budget protects education and protects health care for the poor, the elderly, and the disabled. Public education receives a $61 million increase and Medicaid is funded at a level where programs will not be reduced. As a member of the Senate Finance Committee and a member of the Budget Conference Committee, I worked very hard to insure the people of York County received a fair and equitable share of the funds for state services. Because of budget shortfalls and a slowly recovering economy, we had to be very cautious in our calculating in order to insure a balanced budget. Included in the budget are cuts to agency spending ranging from 0% to 7% above the 6.52% fiscal year 01-02 mid-year reductions. Revenue enhancements for next year's budget include $50.3 million of earnings from restricted funds interest, $40 million of Barnwell clean-up funds, $27.9 million of Insurance Reserve Fund premium redirection, and $101 million of unrestricted funds in the Health Care Trust Fund Program.
