Geography Bee
Geography is a fun subject. Because it is so visual; kids pick up on the information easily. A little basic geography can help make history and current events more understandable.
In the spring, we have our homeschool Geography Bee. The student who answers the most questions correctly will win a prize. There will also be prizes for 2nd and 3rd, and participation prizes for everyone. Since you'll know exactly what to study, I hope you'll all want to participate!
The questions will be based on the following information. Generally, the student should know the information for all the younger grades too, although questions will only come from their own grade. If you keep this chart, it will be a nice outline for studying a bit of geography year by year. Even 15 or 20 minutes once a week adds up to a lot of knowledge about geography, and makes a nice change in the schedule.
Most of the questions for the younger students (k-2) will be answered by pointing to pictures that represent the vocabulary, and pointing to places on maps and globes. All other questions for the youngest students will be multiple choice.
Older student (3-8th) Will need to know the answers without the aid of a multiple choice format.

This teaching unit is prepared as a 3-4 week section of South Dakota History. The objectives of this unit are to introduce the students to South Dakota, the Black Hills and the importance to gold mining in our History. Gold summoned many people to “get rich quick” in the 1800’s and was a boost to the economy of the Black Hills. Gold is still found in “them there hills”, but the Homestake Mine ( at one time the largest gold mine in the Western Hemisphere), is no longer processing gold. Surface mines are still recovering gold by the Leach method and extensive reclamation. I want the students to leave the classroom understanding where in the state the Black Hills are and the importance of mining in our States History. This unit will be completed in the classroom, the computer room and also an outside activity. Lesson Activity Comments Standards Computer What is where in SD Students will use the web to find the cities listed and determine which part of the state they are in. 1 Map search cities, areas

Admitted simultaneously with North Dakota after the Dakota Territory was divided along the 46th parallel, South Dakota is mainly a rural state. Today, just less than 10 percent of its population is American Indian. South Dakota is known for two monumental sculptures carved into the Black HillsMount Rushmore, which honors presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt, and the Crazy Horse Monument, still under construction, which honors the Oglala Sioux war chief. The state flower is the pasqueflower, also called the May Day flower; its blooming is one of the first signs of spring in South Dakota.
