PacNet Newsletter #22A June 03, 2002 South Korea and Japan:
High Time These Neighbors Put Future Before Past

by Aidan Foster-Carter Starting May 31, South Korea and Japan co-host soccer's World Cup. Why? Each would rather have done it alone - and could have. Both have successfully mounted the Olympic Games. Yet so fierce was their rivalry that FIFA ducked out of choosing and made them share it. So they have, but with a bad grace: largely ignoring each other and even squabbling about whose name goes first on the tickets. Will these two ever get along? The roots of acrimony are well-known. Imperial Japan occupied Korea from 1910 to 1945, with brutalities including some 200,000 "comfort women" (sex slaves). Yet Tokyo has never apologized or compensated enough, in Korean eyes. Adding insult to injury, revisionist school textbooks whitewash pre-1945 atrocities, and Prime Minister Koizumi visits the Yasukuni shrine that honors war criminals.

    Location and Geography
Located in South East Asia, South Korea or the Republic of Korea shares the Korean Peninsula with North Korea or the People's Republic of Korea to the North. The Capital of South Korea is Seoul and the capital of North Korea is Pyongyang. The dividing line is aften referred to as the 38 parallel. This is in reference to its location between lattitudes 33 43 degrees North. The area occupied by South Korea is 99,237 square kilometers or about 45 percent of the whole of Korea. South Korea is slightly larger than Hungary or Portugal, and a little smaller than Iceland. It has its neighbours, China to the West, Japan to the East and Russia to the North. Because of its size and geographic location, it has been referred to as a "shrimp among whales" The Korean peninsula extends southward from eastern Manchuria and Siberia to within 70 miles of Kyushu, Japan's major southern island. The distance between Japan's island of Tsushima and Korea's closest island is only 21 miles. The northern border (651 miles) of the peninsula extends along the boundary of China(Manchuria) and touches Russia to the east. Russia's 10.4 mile border with Korea is only 75 miles from Vladivostok, the Russia's major eastern port city. Most of this northern border is formed by two large rivers, the Amnokkang which flows westward into the Yellow Sea and the Tumangang which flows into the East Sea. About 70% of the land is mountainous, mainly to the north and east. These mountains cause a great variation in rainfall and temperature between winter and summer. Only 22% of the land can be farmed because it is so mountainous.
