T he Compendium is an outgrowth of the Mutual Concerns of Air and Space Museums Seminar held annually since 1988, and cosponsored by the National Air and Space Museum and the American Association of Museums. T he first edition of the Compendium was published in September 1993. This second edition includes 25 new additions to the first edition as well as updated information on many of those museums listed in the first edition. The total number of museums represented is 62. In the second edition, we have added appendix material: a list of museum directors , and a list of all aviation and space museums (not included in compendium) that are known to us. T he information is the most comprehensive that exists in published form on aviation and space museums, and we want to thank all of the participating museums for their support and cooperation. B oth editions have been produced by interns at the National Air and Space Museum as their summer project: Stacy Sukov in 1992 (from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School) and Heidi Oertle in 1995 (from Carleton College). Heidi Oertle, like her predecessor, has done a splendid job of producing the 1995 editioncontacting museums, collecting, formatting and editing the material, and designing the entire document literally from cover to cover.

Grieving Americans flock to space museums day after shuttle tragedy Monday, February 03, 2003 By Don Babwin, The Associated Press CHICAGO Lee Einbinder had planned to spend a leisurely day at home yesterday, but the Columbia tragedy brought him to a planetarium instead. "This was the place we wanted to come to pay tribute," said Einbinder, a truck driver, who was at Chicago's Adler Planetarium with his wife and 7-year-old daughter. "I thought here she can see why they did what they did, why they take chances." Americans crowded space museums yesterday, sometimes leaving flowers, candles and handwritten notes to pay tribute to the seven astronauts killed in the disaster. Visitors at the Adler Planetarium kept their voices down and their children close as television screens showed the Columbia's crew members smiling and talking about their mission. "It's a very somber mood now," said Freddy Atkins, who works in the planetarium's educational technology department.

Grieving Americans Flock to Space Museums Monday, February 03, 2003
OAS_AD('Middle'); "This was the place we wanted to come to pay tribute," said Einbinder, a truck driver, who was at Chicago's Adler Planetarium with his wife and 7-year-old daughter. "I thought here she can see why they did what they did, why they take chances." Americans crowded space museums Sunday, sometimes leaving flowers, candles and handwritten notes to pay tribute to the seven astronauts killed in the disaster. Visitors at the Adler Planetarium kept their voices down and their children close as television screens showed the Columbia's crew members smiling and talking about their mission. "It's a very somber mood now," said Freddy Atkins, who works in the planetarium's educational technology department. Some also took comfort in the words of Sally Ride, the first woman in space, who kept an appointment to appear at a science festival. "We'll pick up the torch the astronauts carried and carry it forward," Ride told 800 young girls and their parents at Sunday's event at the University of Central Florida. "I think that although yesterday really was a horrible day for the space program, the space program will go on, it will continue and it will be better than it is today," she said.
