Muslim Spain and European Culture ©1995-2000 Dean Derhak W hen you think of European culture, one of the first things that may come to your mind is the renaissance. Many of the roots of European culture can be traced back to that glorious time of art, science, commerce and architecture. But did you know that long before the renaissance there was a place of humanistic beauty in Muslim Spain? Not only was it artistic, scientific and commercial, but it also exhibited incredible tolerance, imagination and poetry. Moors, as the Spaniards call the Muslims, populated Spain for nearly 700 years. As you'll see, it was their civilization that enlightened Europe and brought it out of the dark ages to usher in the renaissance. Many of their cultural and intellectual influences still live with us today. Way back during the eighth century, Europe was still knee-deep in the Medieval period. That's not the only thing they were knee-deep in. In his book, " The Day The Universe Changed ," the historian James Burke describes how the typical European townspeople lived:

Spain's Culture
Join the Festival!

The "Costa del Sol" of southern Spain extends along the entire province of Malaga and the Atlantic coast of Cadiz. More than a distinctive coastline, it is a geographic delineation of a welcoming, distinctive culture. Here, donkey taxis line the quiet streets, and friends greet friends with outstretched arms and shining smiles outside white-washed buildings supporting cascades of fragrant bougainvillea. This is Andalusia, birthplace of the "flamenco."
Spanish Festivals
Celebrating festivals are a major part of Spanish life. The "Running of the Bulls" is perhaps the most well-known - and wildest - national festival. Most festivals in Spain are religious in origin, but nowadays the religious component is usually secondary to the general spirit of celebration. The Catholic marriage is the basis of the family, which in turn is the foundation of Spanish society. Fiestas (festivals) are an outstanding feature of Spanish life. They usually begin with a high mass followed by a solemn procession in which venerated images are carried on the shoulders of the participants. Music, dancing, poetry, and singing often enliven these colorful occasions. Spain has dozens of festivals and most towns have their own in addition to the national ones, resulting in more than five festivals nation-wide nearly every month! Carnival and Culture : Sex, Symbol, and Status in Spain
Highly recommended. Each February the Andalusian region of southern Spain erupts into a festival of riotous celebration. In this lively book, anthropologist David D. Gilmore explores the meaning of this carnival, with special attention to its songs, or coplas. Mining the rich vein of oral literature in carnival performances, the author offers a new understanding of Spain's celebration as well as rituals of revelry in other parts of the world. .
