    Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating Civil War (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, it has played a catch-up role in the western international community. Continuing concerns are large-scale unemployment and the Basque separatist movement. When you think of Spain you'll most likely picture bullfights, beaches and flamenco dancing, but although these do capture the very essence of Spain, this vibrant country has a whole lot more to offer.
    Spain is situated on the Iberian peninsula, and covers four-fifths of it, leaving one fifth of the peninsula to its neighbour, Portugal. The Pyrenees Mountains separate Spain from the rest of Europe, and the Strait of Gibraltar separates the country from north Africa, by just 14km (9 miles). The northern coast borders the Bay of Biscay and has a perpetual cloak of fine mist: it is often called the Costa Verde, or the Green Coast. The southern coast is extremely popular and is aptly named the Costa del Sol, or Coast of the Sun. Spain's capital is Madrid, a city with a rich cultural heritage and a friendly atmosphere. Spain's other main city, Barcelona, is a liberal and exciting city. Spanish art and architecture give this country a unique ambience. Be sure to spend time seeing Gaudi's architectural wonders and some of the country's splendid cathedrals, many of which were built over mosques from the time of the Moorish Occupation, which left an indelible imprint on Spanish culture.

    map of Spain here.

    Spain is forested mainly on mountain slopes, particularly in the northwest. A common Spanish tree is the evergreen oak. Cork oak, from which the bark may be stripped every ten years, is abundant, growing chiefly as second growth on timbered land. Poplar trees are grown throughout the country and the cultivation of olive trees is a major agricultural activity. Other Spanish trees include the elm, beech, and chestnut. Shrubs and herbs are the common natural vegetation on the central plateau. Grapevines flourish in the arid soil. Esparto grass, used for making paper and various fiber products, grows abundantly in both the wild and cultivated state. On the Mediterranean coast sugarcane, oranges, lemons, figs, almonds, and chestnuts are grown.
    Wildlife is not particularly plentiful, but in the rural areas you can find the wolf, lynx, wildcat, fox, wild boar, wild goat, deer, and hare. Among the more famous domesticated animals are the bulls bred near Seville and Salamanca for bullfighting, the Spanish national sport. Birdlife is abundant, with varieties of birds of prey. Insect life abounds. Mountain streams and lakes teem with fish such as barbel, tench, and trout.

    http://www.oxfam.org.uk/coolplanet/ontheline/explore/journey/spain/prtgeog.htm
    Spain is situated in the far west of Europe and forms the largest part of the Iberian peninsula, which it shares with Portugal. Spain has 4,964 km of coast-line. In the North, Spain is bordered by France, Andorra, and the Bay of Biscay; in the East by the Mediterranean Ocean; in the South by the Atlantic Ocean, and in the West by Portugal. Spain also rules the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, and the enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla in Morocco. The landscape of Spain is varied and ranges from the wet green lands of Cantabria and Galicia to the Almerian deserts and the rugged Pyrenees mountain ranges. After Switzerland, Spain is the most mountainous country in Europe. The Canary Islands are dry and barren because they are volcanic, and the sand on the beaches in Lanzarote is crushed black lava. Spain has only seven navigable rivers, the longest of which is the Ebro stretching for 910 km. Northern Spain, which includes the Basque country, is wild and sparsely populated. The east coast of Spain is very popular with tourists because of its white sandy beaches along the Costa Brava and also the stretches of beach on the Costa del Sol. In the summer the beaches can get very crowded because they are one of the most popular European holiday destinations. More than 52 million people visit Spain each year. spanish geography page spanish virtual journey home page On the Line home page sv=13;
