History
Prehistorical Times
The oldest historical findings made in Spain date of about 30000 to 50000 b.C. Among the most important remains of this period are the caves Cova Negra Játiva ) and Piñar (Granada).
The Celt-Iberian Spain
The Iberian population probably arrived to the peninsula from the north of Africa. Tartessos , probably an iberian tribe, founded an important kingdom of high culture in the valley of Guadalquivir river, in the south of Spain. By 1200 b.C. Celtic tribes entered the peninsula from the north, mixing up with Iberians and so generating the celt-iberian race. The origin of the bask race living in the north of the country is uncertain, but many historians suppose that it goes back to a pre-iberian population.
Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians
By 1100 b.C. Phoenicians arrived to the peninsula and founded colonies, the most important of which was Gadir (today's Cadiz). Also Greeks founded colonies in southern Spain and along the Mediterranean coast.
During the Punic Wars between Rome and Carthago Carthaginians invaded Spain and conquered large parts of it. Their most important colonies were the island Ibiza and Cartagena, the "new Carthago".
Romans and Goths
After Rome had defeated Carthago definitely, Romans also invaded the colonies in Spain, and ended up conquering the entire peninsula. The province

Spain History of Spain The next century saw the apogee of Spain's power and influence throughout the world: Theirs was the first worldwide empire. In addition to their adventures far afield, Spanish kings controlled all or parts of what are now Portugal, the Netherlands, Italy and France. Imperial ambitions brought on imperial excess, however, and adventurism finally sapped the strength of Spain. The country went into a decline that saw it lose nearly all of its colonial possessions by the late 1800s. In the early part of the 20th century, Spain was in turmoil as its traditional culture and economy clashed with modern political and social forces. The breaking point was reached in 1936 with the first shots of the the horrific Spanish Civil War. Fascist dictator Francisco Franco, with the help of Hitler and Mussolini, emerged victorious from the civil war and ruled until his death in 1975. He left Spain in the care of King Juan Carlos I, who soon led Spain toward democracy. With its new freedoms, the country enjoyed a cultural renaissance in the 1980s and 1990s, and in 1992 hosted both the Summer Olympics (in Barcelona) and Expo '92 (in Seville).

BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... SPAIN Spain's roots date back thousands of years when the Phoenicians traded at the country's Mediterranean ports and the population included Celts, Basques, and Iberians. The Romans arrived in 200 B.C. and their rule lasted for nearly 4 centuries, until the Visigoths invaded. Christianity conquered the Visigoths (they converted) but the Berber-Arab North African Moors captured the peninsula in 711 and led to an unprecedented period of culture and civilization. Slowly but surely, however, the Christians reconquered the region and after over 700 years, the last Moorish city, Granada, fell in 1492. The reign of Isabella and Ferdinand brought exploration of the New World to the fore (they supported the voyages of Christopher Columbus) but included the horrors of the Inquisition (begun in 1478) which cost untold thousands of Jews their lives. All the Jews were expelled in 1492. A decade later, so were the Muslims. By 1700, Spain had reached the apogee of its power as a conqueror: South America, Central America, Mexico, western North America, the Philippines and other areas of Africa and Asia were in Spanish hands. By the 19th century, Spain had lost nearly all its major possessions. It weakness was underscored by its humiliating defeat at the hands of the United States in the Spanish-American War in 1898. Civil war in the late 1930s cost Spain dearly: it was help in the grip of dictatorship for nearly the next 40 years under General Francisco Franco. Only after his death in 1975, did the country return to its monarchist roots with the ascension to the Spanish throne of Juan Carlos. Unexpectedly, King Juan Carlos has succeeded in reforming Spain and bringing it fully into the European family of nations.

Czech Republic : W 1-0 (Hierro pen); D 0-0
Slovakia : W 4-1 (Pizzi, Amor, Luis Enrique, Hierro); W 1-2 (Kiko, Amor)

Nevertheless they had been scoring goals, and with a good performance also in the last world cup, were rated amongst the favourites for this one. The disappointment against the African side was compounded by a poor goal-less draw against Paraguay, with Chilavert on unbeatable form, and Spain had one foot out of the competition. In the last match they rallied to beat Bulgaria 6-1, with goals from Morientes (2), Kiko (2), Hierro and Luis Enrique, but it was all academic as Paraguay beat Nigeria 3-1, and Spain were out.

They established colonies on the east and south coast in 1,000 B.C. Phoenicians built Cadiz and Malaga. Celtic people came from north in 900 B.C. and 600 B.C. In 400 B.C. the African city, Carthage, conquered most of Spain. In 200 B.C. Carthaginian's general, Hannibal, attacked Roman Italy.
  • Roman Conquest:
    • It began during Second Punic War. It took Romans 200 years to conquer every region of Spain. Spain became province of Roman Empire. Romans went there to live. Romans built cities in Spain and constructed roads to all regions.

    The History of Spain
    Antiquity's Battleground

Spain has been invaded and inhabited by many different peoples. The peninsula was originally settled by groups from North Africa and western Europe, including the Iberians, Celts, and Basques. Throughout antiquity, it was a constant point of attraction for the more advanced civilizations of the eastern Mediterranean. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating Civil War (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, it has played a catch-up role in the western international community.
The earliest records of an aboriginal past in the Iberian Peninsula are Paleolithic cave paintings, found in the region of the Bay of Biscay and the western Pyrenees, akin to that of prehistoric Africa. The link is amazingly obvious: The southern region of Spain became the first invasion point for the Iberians, originally a North African people, who, about 1000 BC, became the most prominent society in the peninsula giving it its name. The second most important people in the peninsula were the Celts, who entered it in a mass migration from France. The Celts almost completely absorbed the indigenous inhabitants of the central region and, to a lesser extent, those of the northern mountains. A subsequent intermingling of Celts and Iberians formed the so-called "Celtiberians," living chiefly in the central region, the west, and along the northern coast.

    History
    Spain before the Muslim Conquest
Civilization in Spain dates back to the Stone Age. The Basques may be descended from the prehistoric men whose art has been preserved in the caves at Altamira. They antedated the Iberians , who mixed with Celtic invaders at an early period. Because of its mineral and agricultural wealth and its position guarding the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain was known to the Mediterranean peoples from very early times. The Phoenicians passed through the strait and established (9th cent. B.C. Tarshish ). Later the Carthaginians settled on the east coast and in the Balearic Islands, where Greek colonies also sprang up. In the 3d cent. B.C.

History HISTORY OF THE MINES OF SPAIN AREA
The earliest known inhabitants of the Mines of Spain State Recreation Area during historical times were the Mesquakie. Their village was located at the mouth of Catfish Creek, just south of where the Julien Dubuque Monument now stands. From this site, the Mesquakie carried on a fur trade with French voyagers. They also worked the lead mines for many decades dating back to before the Revolutionary War. There is also evidence of prehistoric Native American cultures, some dating back as much as 8,000 years. Mounds, village sites, rock shelters, trading post sites, and campsites dot the landscape. Julien Dubuque is credited as being the first European to settle on what is now Iowa soil in 1788. In 1796, Dubuque received a land grant from the Governor of Spain, who had resided in New Orleans at the time. The grant gave permission to Julien Dubuque to work the land which was owned by Spain and specified the 189-square mile area to be named as "Mines of Spain." Dubuque eventually married Potosa, daughter of the Mesquakie Indian Chief, Peosta. Dubuque died March 24,1810. Lead mining was a major part of this area's history, first by the Native Americans, and in later years (late 1830s through the 1850s) by European miners and farmers. The Civil War caused renewed lead mining activity which waned after the war, but continued until 1914.
