Dansie Anti Spam A server-side anti-spam email filtering solution. Like yourphone number guard it well, or spam in my email will forever swell.
http://www.dansie.net/spam_fighting_tips.html
Spam fighting tips:
  • Be careful who you give your email address out to. Don't give your email address to companies who are known for conducting spam and never reply to or click on a link found in a spam, as that just tells them that your email address is good and they will send you more. Don't give your email out to friends that like to participate in chain letters. If they expose your email address on a chain letter and one of the other recipients is a spammer, they could add your email address to their mailing list.
  • Remove your email address from your website's pages and provide a web based mail form instead. This way spammers can't send robots to your page to harvest email addresses and put them on their mailing lists. www.dansie.net can provide you with such a script free of charge. http://www.dansie.net/mail.zip
  • If you don't have a website and you have just one POP email account, you may consider just closing your account and opening a new POP email account. Make sure that your ISP hasn't been the one selling your email address too!
  • If you have your own domain name, don't set up a POP email account to catch ANYTHING@yourname.com. Many spams you receive will say, "TO: 83jfd9e3@YourName.com". The user name was merely made up. Set up your POP accounts to only receive email from specific user names and have the rest go into oblivion.

There is no significant new code or features to the product. Since the last update was over two months ago, however, everyone should update. A year or so ago I removed the email addresses from all our web pages (hundreds), to remove it from the view of spambots (my term for programs that scour newsgroups, mailing lists, or web sites for email addresses). Too late, my address is in the spammers lists, several times over..
    What is Spam ?
Spam is a meat-based product manufactured by Hormel Foods Corporation and immortalised by a famous Monty Python sketch . It has since been adopted by the Internet community to signify the mindless mass-posting of messages to Usenet or email, flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message. Spam is unwanted, invasive Internet advertising. Spam comes to you in two ways: either through Usenet's newsgroups, or via Email. Spam is invasive, in that you haven't asked for it and it gets sent to you (or posted to your newsgroup) anyway. Most spam is commercial advertising, typically for get-rich-quick schemes, or probable scams. Spam costs the sender very little to send most of the costs are borne by the recipient or the carriers. Spam consumes

Timothy J. Walton has expertise in spam email litigation.
    Spam
Tired of deleting unwanted email? Join the fight against unsolicited commercial email by suing to enforce the law. Here's the four step procedure:
Step One : Determine the law in your jurisdiction
Go to http://www.spamlaws.com/ to find out if your state regulates unsolicited commercial email. If your state does not have a law regarding UCE, then you need to write to your legislator and lobby for one. If your state does have a law protecting you, and you have received UCE in violation of the law, then go on to Step Two.
Step Two : Preserve the Evidence
First, expose the headers in the email. You can do this in most email clients by choosing "Headers" under the "View" menu list.
Print the email showing all headers. It will look something like the example here
Step Three : Identify the spammer
Most spammers try to hide their identities because they know that what they are doing is wrong. Nonetheless, they want your money and need to provide at least enough info to get it. Some people consider this "spam hunting" aspect to be the most fun part of the process. Learn whether the headers have been forged by reading these web pages and discussions:

    Anti-Spam Email Information
Last updated on June 24, 2002. While I want to be able to receive email from people previously unknown to me, regarding my web pages, work, and newsgroup postings; I don't want to receive unsolicited bulk email. I also want to block my web pages from annoying bots. I currently block stuff at wolff.to based on the following:
    • Email sent to spamtrap addresses will block the IP of the host handing the email off to me.
    • Requesting certain web pages via http or https will resulting in the IP address of the connecting client being blocked. Generally only robots that ignore meta robot tags will try to fetch these pages. If you are interested in this, I have details available.
    • I will manually (via a quick command in my mail reader) add the IP addresses of hosts which handoff virus mesages or spam to my host.
    • I will occasionally manually add IP addresses of misbehaved robots that don't trigger a block on their own.
    • I will block domain names used in the envelope sender address from sending me email if I see that their mail server doesn't accept bounce messages.
My mail at UWM gets extra scrutiny, since I can't control who gets to send stuff to their hosts and they do some internal spamming, I use mail filters to drop messages based on a number of idiosyncratic rules.

    Overview

The McAfee SpamKiller TM TM , McAfee SpamKiller provides four levels of defense against spam email.
    Multiple Levels of spam protection
SpamKiller, powered by SpamAssassin, uses a scoring system based on an extensive rule set to determine whether a particular email message is spam. More than 650 rules are run against every email and each rule is associated with a score, positive or negative. Rules with negative scores indicate attributes of legitimate mail; rules with positive scores indicate attributes of unsolicited mail. When added together, these individual scores give each email an "overall spam rating". A genetic algorithm optimizes the scoring, using an archive of millions of spam, and non-spam, messages to determine the scores for the individual rules. SpamKiller then moves the emails into the user’s inbox, their personal junk mail folder or a system wide junk mail folder.
Utilizing this underlying rule-set process, McAfee SpamKiller checks each email message that is received by using five different methods of detection.

    Filtering Email for Unwanted Content
Many Oxford email users are getting offensive and other emails which they would rather not see.  Such unsolicited email is called spam.
    Why are you getting spam?
Your email address has been obtained by nasty people who sell it on and use it for marketing purposes.  The entire Oxford email directory from about 3-years ago now appears to be being used and any web page which lists your email address is also a source.
Why does the University not stop the messages reaching me?
It is near impossible to be 100% sure that the message is unwanted.  It would be unacceptable to have a mail filter which was only 99% accurate which binned valuable Emails.
    What can I do?
Firstly if you get unwanted Email, never reply saying you want to be unsubscribed, or reply in any way - you are just confirming that your email address works! Most Email clients (the programs you use to read your email) have the ability to filter email.  The HERALD wing (web) interface cannot be set up to filter email AT THE MOMENT Details about using different email clients to read your HERALD account can be found here You can set up filters which trigger on certain words (e.g. XXX, casino, etc.) and have that message moved directly from your inbox to a separate folder.  You then need to review periodically those diverted messages to ensure that there are no valid ones and to delete the bogus ones.  It is not wise to automatically delete the messages without reviewing the titles and senders.

[ top With the massive amount of information and speed the Internet is able to handle, communication has been revolutionized with email and other online communication systems. Users are able to send messages across the globe in seconds, and to many people at once. Recently, however, some computer users have abused the technology used to drive these communications, by sending out thousands and thousands of emails with little or no purpose other than to increase traffic or decrease bandwidth.
A rough definition of spam is any unsolicited email sent against the interest and knowledge of the recipient, usually with no intention of a response other than to visit a website or sell a product. These emails are usually sent out in large numbers to many recipients. However, it is important to differentiate between unsolicited email which can be labeled as spam and solicited email. Solicited email my have the same goals as unsolicited email, but you may receive a solicited email that the sender has deemed to be in your interest, or related to a previous interest. spam email, however, is usually sent without any knowledge or consideration of the recipients interests, and is sent out only with the desired result in mind.
