CAUCE Welcomes our New Affiliates to the Fight Against Spam!
(If you're in Europe, Canada, Australia, or India click on the icons above.) UCE is the leading complaint of Internet users. But junk e-mail is more than just annoying, it costs Internet users and Internet-based businesses millions , even billions , per year. Junk e-mail is "postage due" marketing; it's like a telemarketer calling you collect. The economics of junk e-mail encourages massive abuse and because junk e-mailers can get into the business very cheaply, the volume of junk e-mail is increasing every day. CAUCE was founded by Netizens who realized that technology alone can't stop junk e-mail. As long as there is an economic incentive to send junk e-mail, users and Internet Service Providers will need some legal recourse to stop the growing flood. That's why in 1997 CAUCE proposed an amendment to the Federal statute which outlaws junk "faxes" ( 47 USC 227 ) to also prohibit junk e-mail. Since then CAUCE has become the preeminent voice for the anti-spam community.

Spam (Unsolicited Bulk Email), antispam, and related matters
I have written on my computer page about part of why I am a spamfighter, among my other activities in what little spare time I have as a graduate student. Below are some of the things that I am doing/working on as part of this ( go further below if you're wondering about a test message):
  • Examining current blacklists for their characteristics, such as how often they list a "known-good" host. By "known-good", I mean a host that we would need to whitelist, if we used that blacklist, and moreover a host that may indicate that the blacklist, while probably fine for its maintainer(s)' intended usage, may be too over-eager to list for ours; it does not mean an agreement between my viewpoint and that of the organization or individual running that host (as might be guessed from that I am checking some governmental sites, given my political viewpoint), but rather that blocking email from that host may have distinctly negative consequences that override any spamblocking or other (see below ) motivations). My judgement on what is a "known-good" host can vary over time, including in reaction to what I learn via the checks of a host versus blacklists (see

It's an accepted fact of life, at least in the U.S. So why is Unsolicited Commercial Email (UCE) a/k/a "spam" or "junk email" a problem? There are many places on the Internet where copies of UCE are reposted by recipients and system administrators in order to help notify the Internet community about where UCE is originating. Robots that scan the web often can find your email address, and others, off the web. Now you can fight back against their robots by placing a link to our Anti-Spam page.
    How Does It Work?
On the Anti-Spam page, there is a list of 100 randomly generated, fake email addresses. When a spammer's program comes by to collect email addresses, it will find the link to Anti-Spam. When it follows this link, it will find a hundred fake email addresses and index them. At the bottom of the Anti-Spam page is a link back to itself, slightly modified, so that 100 new email addresses come up. This puts the robot into an infinite loop collecting fake email addresses. When a spammer sends out a mailing, he will receive a TON of returned email.

Limiting Unsolicited Bulk Email
IMC's members have expressed a strong interest in helping to come up with solutions to the problem of unsolicitied bulk email (UBE), better known as "spam". The use and abuse of UBE is spreading rapidly, and many Internet users are complaining loudly about the very negative effects it has on them.
IMC Report Details Solutions to Unsolicited Bulk Email
Furthering its effort to help groups who are working to reduce or eliminate unsolicited bulk email, IMC has recently updated the second of its reports on the problem. The report, " Unsolicited Bulk Email: Mechanisms for Control ", lists the many technical and legal solutions being discussed and shows how they affect Internet mail users. The second edition of this report contains many new sections suggested by readers of the first edition.
IMC Report Defines Unsolicited Bulk Email And Its Problems
Many groups are discussing ways to help reduce or eliminate unsolicited bulk mail. However, few of these groups, including the state and national legislatures that are considering laws relating to unsolicited bulk email, have set down good definitions for what they are trying to curtail and what the problems are. To aid these groups, IMC has written a report titled "

Notes on stopping Unsolicited Commercial Email
There are three places to concentrate efforts to reduce or eliminate Unsolicited Commercial Email (UCE):
  • the border router to the Internet the message transport agent (MTA, usually sendmail)
We use all three mechanisms together to combat the UCE by order of severity. Constant barrages of unsolicited email have earned several sites a place in our router filters. They have been completely blocked from our site at the IP layer, and we monitor additions to their IP network space. When they get new network numbers, we add them to our router filters. Most sites delivering UCE are blocked by our MTA by domain name. "savetrees.com" is probably a good example here. Not quite bad enough to block at the IP level, they are blocked by domain name. Additionally, our MTA verifies valid domain names and checks IP address to hostname resolution. Together, this rejects probably 99% of junk email. The last step is up to our individual users. By using filters in the MUA, users can catch whatever sneaks through the first two methods, and toss it into the trash. After we get even one complaint about UCE from a user, we add it to the MTA database.

    Reading Email Headers
    All About Email Headers
    Introduction
This document is intended to provide a comprehensive introduction to the behavior of email headers. It is primarily intended to help victims of unsolicited email ("email spam") attempting to determine the real source of the (generally forged) email that plagues them; it should also help in attempts to understand any other forged email. It may also be beneficial to readers interested in a general-purpose introduction to mail transfer on the Internet. Although the document intentionally avoids "how-to-forge" discussions, some of the information contained in it might be turned to that purpose by a sufficiently determined mind. The author explicitly does not endorse malicious or deceptive falsification of email, of course, and any use for such purposes of the information contained in this document is contrary to its purpose. Because of the nature of the examples in this document, there are several fictitious domain names with associated IP (Internet Protocol) addresses. The chance that some of these domain names may be used at some future time is, inevitably, nonzero. Similarly, all IP addresses used in the examples are unidentified at this writing, but they will undoubtedly be assigned someday. Naturally, nothing in this document is intended to reflect in any way on future users of these domain names or IP addresses.
    Where Email Comes From
