The Problem
" Spamming is the scourge of electronic-mail and newsgroups on the Internet. It can seriously interfere with the operation of public services, to say nothing of the effect it may have on any individual's e-mail mail system. ... Spammers are, in effect, taking resources away from users and service suppliers without compensation and without authorization." - Vint Cerf, Senior Vice President, MCI
and acknowledged "Father of the Internet" " The spam wars are about rendering email useless for unsolicited advertising before unsolicited advertising renders email useless for communication."

CAUBE.AU
(Coalition Against Unsolicited Bulk Email, Australia) CAUBE.AU was formed to represent the views of those in Australia who are opposed to the advertising practices which are collectively known as email spam. Consumers are increasingly hostile to spam, whether it comes from unknown or known senders. CAUBE.AU is an all-volunteer grassroots organisation dedicated to eliminating spam from electronic mail boxes, with a focus on Australia's role in preventing spam. We pursue these aims through community education programs, by providing this site, which is a central repository for information on spam in Australia, and by providing advice to the government on how best to deal with the spam problem. CAUBE.AU holds the view that the only effective method of addressing the spam problem is through legislation. For most of us, this is a reversal of previously held views that the government should not regulate the Internet, however the problem of spam is unique, and as such deserves unique consideration. Notably, the trends in spam volumes clearly demonstrate that this problem is getting significantly worse.

AOL Mail Chokes on Spam Antidote
12:02 PM May. 13, 1997 PT A rash of email delivery problems this past week at America Online - including the clogging of several Internet mailing lists - have been caused mainly by the company's spam-fighting efforts, officials at the Dulles, Virginia-based company, claim. Last Friday, AOL chief Steve Case had affirmed a beefing up of the company's email capabilities in his latest "Community Update" column, saying that recent efforts to improve system quality included AOL's increased ability to handle email, and that the number of incoming messages the service could handle was up to almost 400 million per month.

But while Case's words rang in the background, a portion of the email messages directed at AOLers from the rest of the Net took up to five days to arrive - or simply bounced back to the sender. Alex Phillips, an administrator at

We hate Spam (email your friends) By Drew Cullen Posted: 02/12/2002 at 15:34 GMT
Is it our imagination, or was there once a time when life existed without unsolicited exhortations to visit bestiality web sites?
Spam is fast becoming the battle cry de nos jours - the biggest Internet rallying point since the last big Internet rallying point (take your pick from intrusive ads, intrusive filters, intrusive governments).
The perception for most is of exponential growth in spam, even for those of us without Hotmail accounts - were you getting Korean-language spams, say, a year ago? This is supported by a blizzard of surveys. It's getting to the stage when email as we know it will collapse under the weight of unsolicited, err, email.
So says Eric Allman, the founder of Sendmail. And so says the Sunday Times which this week begins a campaign to wipe the scourge of spam from the face of the earth. Just like smallpox. The European Union has also banned spam, not that this will have much effect on our inboxes when the law is enacted. According to most estimates, the overwhelming mass of spam is sent by just 100-150 merchants.
